This article explains one way to assess the influence which Saturn has in a chart, and therefore how strong or weak it is, through the calculation of essential dignity.
Essential dignity is not an exact science, but it is a practical and reliable method to help you go a little deeper into chart interpretation. It gives you a way to compare how Saturn may perform from one chart to another. – Alison
This article is part of my Advanced Natal Astrology series, where I explore deeper chart analysis for practicing and aspiring astrologers.
Essential dignity is an ancient technique used to assess the condition of a planet based on its zodiac position.
Each planet behaves differently depending on the sign and degree it occupies. Some placements support the planet’s natural expression, while others make it harder for the planet to operate clearly.
Everyone has a Saturn placement in their birth chart. My Saturn in Capricorn will express differently from your Saturn, and this method helps explain why.
When we say Saturn is strong or weak, we are not making a judgement about good or bad. Rather we are describing how easily Saturn can express its nature in the chart.
A strong Saturn has a clear and steady voice. Its qualities tend to show up in a direct and reliable way. These may include discipline, patience, structure, responsibility and the ability to work toward long-term goals. There is often a natural respect for time, limits and commitment. The person may feel more comfortable taking on duty, setting boundaries and building something that lasts.
A strong Saturn can also lean toward rigidity if it becomes too fixed, but overall it operates with confidence and consistency.
A weaker Saturn is quieter and less certain in its expression.
Its themes are still present, but they may take more time and conscious effort to develop. The person may need to learn how to create structure, hold boundaries or trust their own authority. There can be hesitation around responsibility or a feeling of needing to “grow into” Saturn over time.
The gifts of Saturn are still available here, such as resilience, maturity and self-mastery, but they are often developed through experience rather than coming naturally at the start.
In all cases, Saturn is not something to fear. It is the part of the chart that asks for patience, practice and integrity. Over time, it becomes one of your greatest strengths.
When working with Saturn, keep these core themes gently in mind. They will help you stay grounded as you interpret its placement and condition.
These keywords act as anchors. They help you translate Saturn’s dignity into a clear and meaningful interpretation that reflects both its challenges and its quiet strengths.
For even more information, you can look at the full planetary complex for Saturn and all the planets. It is in the planetary complexes where many more features of the planet’s positions are considered.
I am using Ptolemy’s calculations for the terms (see later) but please do note there are other terms tables like the Egyptians.
You can read more about this topic in Ptolemy’s great book Tetrabiblos or Quadripartite being Four Books of the Influence of the Stars.
In my Saturn Dignities Diagram shown here the colored parts represent where Saturn has essential dignity.
The 12 zodiac signs.
Saturn’s terms are indicated in purple.
Saturn’s face in the earth signs is indicated in purple.
The fatter fourth ring shows the four main essential dignities:
When Saturn is in Aries it is in fall and gets a score of -4.
When Saturn is placed in 26°-29° Aries it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 22°-25° Taurus it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 21°-24° Gemini it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 27°-29° Cancer it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 0°-5° Leo it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 18°-23° Virgo it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 0°-5° Libra it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 27°-29° Scorpio it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 19°-24° Sagittarius it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 25°-29° Capricorn it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 0°-5° Aquarius it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in 26°-29° Pisces it has term and gets a score of +3.
When Saturn is placed in the second decanate of Taurus, from 10°– 19°, it has face and gets a score of +2.
When Saturn is placed in the first decanate of Leo, from 0°– 9°, it has face and gets a score of +2.
When Saturn is placed in the second decanate of Libra, from 10°– 19°, it has face and gets a score of +2.
When Saturn is placed in the third decanate of Sagittarius, from 20°– 29°, it has face and gets a score of +2.
When Saturn is placed in the first decanate of Pisces, from 0°– 9°, it has face and gets a score of +2.
Saturn operates with quiet authority and steadiness. Its natural qualities of discipline, structure and responsibility are expressed with ease and confidence.
Saturn is supported and refined. It often shows patience, wisdom and good judgement, with a balanced approach to limits and long-term effort.
Saturn may feel out of place and less certain in how to express control or structure. Boundaries can be inconsistent, and it may take time to develop confidence in its role.
Saturn can feel heavy or overly cautious. There may be hesitation around responsibility or a tendency to hold back, yet this position can lead to deep inner strength over time.
These offer subtle background support. They do not dominate, but they can gently steady Saturn and help it function with a little more ease.
To calculate Saturn’s essential dignity score you must add up all the scores for rulership, exaltation, fall, detriment, term and face.
Here are some examples so you can see that there are many ways which Saturn can score with it being sometimes positive and sometimes negative.
The maximum Saturn can score is +8. The least Saturn can score is -5.
A score of +3 and above is strong. Saturn here is steady and reliable in its expression.
Its qualities show up clearly through discipline, patience, good judgement and the ability to build something over time. There is often a natural respect for structure, boundaries and responsibility.
A score from +2 to 0 is neutral. Saturn operates in a moderate way.
It is present but not dominant. Its themes may come and go, sometimes steady, sometimes less certain, depending on other chart factors. With awareness, it can be used in a balanced and practical way.
A score of -2 and below is weak. Saturn may feel harder to access or express with confidence.
Its themes can show up as hesitation, self-doubt, avoidance of responsibility or difficulty maintaining structure. Over time, and through experience, these challenges can develop into resilience, maturity and quiet inner strength.
Essential dignity is only one part of Saturn’s story. You also need to consider which house Saturn is placed in the chart.
I believe that its always best to blend Saturn’s sign strength with its house position to understand how it will actually show up.
Aspects shape how Saturn behaves and how easily its energy flows.
No single factor is likely to the whole story. Saturn’s proper expression comes from the way dignity, house placement and aspects all work together. This can be seen in the planetary complexes.
Saturn’s influence develops slowly and reveals itself over time.
Saturn works in cycles. Its expression can strengthen or soften depending on timing, so always consider where you are in your personal journey.
If you want to grow as an astrologer, I think that you need to move beyond surface meanings and take a deeper look at how Saturn actually functions.
One way to do this is to work with Saturn in the natal chart, and then follow it through forecasting, especially in transits and secondary progressions. This is where you begin to see how its themes unfold in real time.
When you assess Saturn’s essential dignity, you gain insight into how strongly it can express itself. You begin to see where Saturn can step forward with authority and where it remains quieter or less certain.
By comparing Saturn with the other planets, you also understand how its voice fits within the whole chart. This shows you whether Saturn is leading, supporting or working more in the background.
Astrology is layered.
Essential dignity offers a clear and structured way to assess planetary strength, but it is only one piece of the whole.
Your role as the astrologer is to bring dignity, house placement, aspects and timing together into a thoughtful and balanced interpretation.
The influence which Saturn has will wax and wane over the years (in the secondary progressed chart) and you, as an astrologer, need to be able to make a judgement about if it is a prominent energy this year or not.
Avoid the view that one size fits all with Saturn. What was the case in the natal chart may have changed by the current year in someone’s life.

This article is part of my Advanced Natal Astrology series, where I explore deeper chart analysis for practicing and aspiring astrologers.
This article gently explores the relationship between Mercury and Venus in your chart. I’ve been toying with this idea of left brain right brain for a while now and thought I’d share it with you for your thoughts.
These two planets can reflect how you process both words and images, linking thought with impressions. Together, they offer insight into how different ways of knowing come together within you, blending logic and perception into your everyday experience. – Alison
Mercury and Venus are personal planets and they have their orbits between the Sun and the Earth.
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun it lies between the Sun and Venus. Mercury orbits the Sun in around 88 days. Mercury travels around the zodiac close to the Sun once each year.
Venus is placed between Mercury and the Earth. Venus orbits the Sun in around 225 days or about seven and a half months. Venus also travels around the zodiac every
Mercury rules the two signs of Gemini and Virgo.
In Gemini, Mercury expresses itself through curiosity, conversation and the gathering of information. It is quick, adaptable and interested in variety and connection.
In Virgo, Mercury becomes more focused and precise, turning its attention to analysis, detail and practical application.
Together, these signs show Mercury’s full range, from collecting ideas to refining and organizing them into something useful. You can deepen this further by exploring Mercury’s essential dignity and how strongly it operates in your chart.
In traditional astrology, Mercury is known as the “Messenger of the Gods.” This reflects its role as a bridge between worlds, carrying information, translating meaning and making connections.
Mercury links people, ideas and experiences, allowing understanding to flow. It represents movement, exchange and the ability to interpret what is seen and heard.
Mercury is connected to many areas of everyday life that involve thinking and communication:
At its core, Mercury describes how you process information, how you learn and how you express your thoughts to others.
I believe that Mercury urges you to stay curious and engaged with the world around you. It encourages you to ask questions, share ideas and develop your voice. Through your Mercury placement, you learn to think clearly, communicate effectively and make sense of your experiences. It reminds you that understanding grows through exchange, conversation and a willingness to keep learning.
In Taurus, Venus expresses itself through the physical world, bringing attention to comfort, resources, money and what you can build and hold onto.
In Libra, Venus moves into the realm of relationships, balance and connection, highlighting cooperation, harmony and the art of relating to others.
Together, these signs show that Venus is concerned with both what you have and who you share it with. You can deepen your understanding by exploring Venus’s essential dignity and how strong or supported it is in your chart.
In traditional astrology, Venus is known as the “Lesser Benefic.” This suggests a gentle, supportive influence which brings ease, pleasure and attraction.
Venus does not push or force. Instead, it draws things toward you through charm, grace and alignment with what feels good and right.
It represents the principle of attraction rather than effort, showing where life can flow more smoothly.
Venus is connected to many areas of life which revolve around value and enjoyment:
At its core, Venus describes what you appreciate, what you are drawn to and what you are willing to invest in, whether that is time, energy, affection or resources.
Venus urges you to consider what truly matters to you. It urges you to recognize your values, to cultivate beauty in your surroundings and to create relationships which feel balanced and supportive.
Through Venus, you learn to receive as well as give, to enjoy what you have and to align your choices with what brings a sense of peace, pleasure and worth.
Mercury and Venus work as a natural pair in your chart, linking how you think with what you value. Mercury gathers information, asks questions and forms ideas, while Venus decides what feels worthwhile, pleasing or important.
In daily life, this shows up in the choices you make, the way you communicate and how you relate to others. I believe that what you think influences what you like, and what you like shapes how you speak and respond.
When these two planets are in harmony, your words reflect your values with ease. When they are out of step, you may say one thing but feel another, or struggle to express what truly matters to you.
Mercury and Venus move close to the Sun and are never far from each other in the sky. Because of this, they meet regularly in a repeating cycle, forming conjunctions that begin a new phase in how your thoughts and values interact.
Mercury moves faster through the zodiac and circles the Sun more quickly, while Venus has a slower, more graceful 5/8 rhythm aligned with the Fibonacci sequence.
Their different speeds mean that Mercury will catch up to Venus again and again, creating a series of meetings that refresh the connection between mind and heart.
A synodic cycle begins at the conjunctions between two planets. Then the faster of the two will slowly move away forming phase back to the slower planet.
The relationship between Mercury and Venus at your birth shows a long-term pattern of growth and development in your life.
This cycle reveals how you naturally balance expansion with responsibility.
You need to go back and find the chart for the Mercury Venus synodic cycle which is in your own birth chart. This will be the last Mercury Venus conjunction before you were born and it can be up to a few months prior to your birthday.
As Mercury and Venus move through the zodiac, their ongoing cycle generally influences information and impressions.
Symbolically, each conjunction marks a reset point. It is a moment when new ideas about relationships, money, beauty and personal preferences can emerge.
These cycles suggest that your way of thinking about what you value is not fixed. It evolves over time.
You may notice periods when you rethink what you enjoy, how you communicate in relationships or what you are willing to invest your time and energy into.
As the cycle unfolds, there is a natural rhythm of noticing, adjusting and refining.
Early in the cycle, there may be curiosity and new perspectives (Mercury).
Later, there can be more clarity and confidence in expressing what you like and why it matters (Venus).
Over time, this repeating pattern reflects an ongoing conversation within you, where Mercury asks questions and Venus answers with feeling, taste and desire.
The idea of left brain and right brain thinking offers a simple way to understand how different types of awareness work within you. While both sides of the brain are always active and connected, each tends to specialize in certain functions.
In astrology, this can be a helpful way to picture the difference between Mercury and Venus.
The left hemisphere is closely linked with language and logic. It helps you form sentences, organize ideas and communicate clearly. This is the part of the mind that reads, writes, counts and analyzes. It works step by step, building meaning through structure and sequence.
This reflects Mercury’s role in your chart.
Mercury gathers information, sorts it and turns it into something you can understand and explain. It is your inner voice, your reasoning process and your ability to name and describe the world around you.
The right hemisphere is more connected with visual, sensory and creative awareness. It responds to color, shape, pattern and tone. Rather than breaking things down, it takes in the whole picture at once. It is intuitive, feeling based and attuned to harmony and beauty.
This reflects Venus’s role in your chart. Venus responds to what seems pleasing, meaningful and attractive. It does not need to explain why something is beautiful or valuable, it simply recognizes it.
Venus guides your taste, your sense of style and your ability to appreciate art, relationships and the subtle qualities that bring enjoyment to life.
Together, Mercury and Venus show how you balance logic and feeling, words and aesthetics, analysis and appreciation.
When they work well together, you can express what you value with clarity and grace.
When they are out of balance, you may lean too heavily on reason or be guided only by impressions.
The aim is not to choose one over the other, but to allow both ways of knowing to support each other in your daily life.
That said, it’s not a strict brain hemisphere split. In real life, both sides of the brain work together all the time. When you write, you are also imagining.
When you create art, you are still making decisions and organizing ideas.
So, it’s helpful as a simple framework, but the brain is much more integrated than this left versus right idea suggests.
For more information on this super interesting topic and our changing understanding of the brain here are some references which I used for this article.
Mercury and Venus form a simple but meaningful cycle made up of four key phases. These phases are based on their angular relationship to each other in the sky.
Each phase describes a different stage in how your thoughts and values connect, develop and evolve over time.
Ther are only two waxing phases between Mercury and Venus.
Mercury tends to dominate the waxing phases as information constantly comes in and we are bombarded with information, adverts and noise.
This phase begins when Mercury and Venus come together in a conjunction. It marks the start of a new cycle between mind and heart.
Fresh ideas about relationships, money, creativity or personal preferences can emerge. There is a sense of beginning again, although the direction may not yet be fully clear.
As Mercury moves ahead of Venus, the connection begins to grow. This is a time of exploration and adjustment.
You may start to test new ideas about what you like, how you communicate and what feels worthwhile. Effort is needed to build confidence and give shape to emerging values.
There are only two waning phases between Mercury and Venus.
Venus tends to dominate the waning phase as visual impressions, pictures, nuance and color arrive into our awareness.
Here, tension can arise between what you think and what you feel. You may question your choices or reassess how you relate to others.
This phase encourages reflection and change. It is a time to let go of outdated patterns in communication or values that no longer fit your current situation.
This is the closing phase of the cycle, just before Mercury and Venus meet at the conjunction again. Now there is a sense of completion and release.
Old ideas about love, money or self-worth may fade, making space for something new to form.
It is a quieter, more reflective time where insight typically comes through letting go rather than pushing forward.
Together, these four phases describe an ongoing rhythm in your life, where your thinking and your values are continually renewed, tested and refined.
In any chart, Mercury and Venus always stay close.
Mercury can be up to about 28° away from the Sun. The Messenger of the Gods never strays beyond this distance.
In any birth chart Mercury will always be in the same sign as the Sun or at the most one sign away.
Venus can be a bit further, up to about 47° from the Sun. Because of this wider range, Venus can be in the same sign as the Sun or up to two signs away.
In astrology, this is why you often see Mercury and Venus closely tied to your Sun sign energy, as they are always moving close by to the Sun and expressing themselves in relation to it.
The two inner planets are more frequently the morning planet in birth charts.
Mercury is the morning planet in 33% of charts (that’s one in three people) and Venus in 25% of all charts (that’s one in four people).
In general, Mercury and Venus can only be three houses away from each other in a chart. This may change for extreme latitudes, higher than 58° north or south, where the Ptolemaic houses are very thin, to stretch to five houses.
There are only four aspects which Mercury and Venus can form. The conjunction, semi-square, sextile and quintile.
Because Mercury and Venus both stay close to the Sun, their relationship is limited to just a few specific aspects.
This creates a unique dynamic between them, as they never form the full range of major aspects that other planets can. Instead, their connection is more subtle and refined, expressed through four key angles that describe how your thinking and your values interact.
Mercury and Venus are aligned in the same part of the zodiac. This is the most common connection, found in just under a quarter (21%) of charts.
Here, your thoughts and your values are closely linked. You tend to say what you feel and value what makes sense to you. There is a natural ease in expressing your likes, preferences and affections.
This is a mild but noticeable tension, present in around 11% of charts.
Your mind and your values do not always agree, which can create small inner conflicts. You may overthink what you like or struggle to articulate your feelings clearly. This aspect encourages adjustment and awareness.
A supportive and cooperative connection, also found in about 11% of charts. Mercury and Venus work well together, allowing you to communicate with charm and sensitivity.
There is an ease in expressing appreciation, creativity and social grace. Opportunities often arise through conversation and connection.
A more specialized and less common aspect, and between Mercury and Venus it appears in about 5% of charts. The quintile is linked to creativity and talent.
Here, your mind and your sense of beauty combine in unique ways, often showing skill in art, design, writing or any form of aesthetic expression.
In just over half of all charts (52%), Mercury and Venus do not form an aspect to each other.
When there is no aspect thinking and your values may operate more independently. You might find that what you think and what you feel are not always connected, and conscious effort is needed to bring them into alignment.
Due to their proximity to the Sun, Mercury and Venus cannot form certain aspects with each other. These aspects are the square, opposition, sesquiquadrate and bi-quintile.
This limitation shapes their relationship, keeping it within a narrower range of expression and emphasizing the more subtle ways in which mind and value can interact.
Mercury and Venus describe how you engage with the world around you.
Your thoughts and your values are always working together. What you think shapes what you like. What you like influences how you speak, choose and relate. Ideas need meaning and meaning needs expression.
Communication must carry value. Preferences have to be understood and expressed. The mind and the heart are in constant dialogue.
As an astrologer, I believe your role is to observe how these two energies interact in each unique chart, revealing how a person connects, communicates and finds harmony in their everyday life.
Mercury communicates, trades and is factual. Mercury represents agents, salespeople, youths and teachers. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo.
Venus is feminine. Venus loves, acquires and appreciates. Venus represents young women, girlfriends, sweethearts and accountants. Venus rules Taurus and Libra.

The three outer planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
They are also known as the transpersonal planets.
In astrology, the outer planets don’t concern themselves with your daily to-do list or whether Mercury is ruining your email again.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto work on a much grander scale.
They move slowly, think collectively and have absolutely no interest in your comfort zone.
These are the planets that awaken, dissolve and transform your life from the ground up.
When they are strong in a chart or transit, life doesn’t just change, it upgrades, unravels or completely reinvents itself.
Subtle they are not.
Uranus is the planet which flips your life over and calls it progress. It governs revolution, rebellion and the sudden realization that “this just isn’t working anymore.”
Uranus is associated with:
Where Uranus is placed in your chart, that is where you refuse to follow the script. This is the part of you which craves freedom, originality and the right to do things in your own unique way.
Uranus transits often coincide with unexpected events, breakthroughs, breakouts and breakdowns and the irresistible urge to quit, move, invent or radically redefine yourself somehow.
Collectively, Uranus rules social revolutions and technological leaps forward. It reminds humanity that evolution doesn’t happen by playing it safe.
Uranus changes, breaks and fashions. Uranus represents adolescents, trendsetters, agitators, and immigrants. Uranus rules Aquarius.
Neptune is less interested in facts and more interested in feelings, dreams and everything that can’t be measured with a ruler. It dissolves boundaries and blurs lines in your life and especially the ones you thought were solid.
Neptune governs:
In a natal chart, Neptune reveals where we yearn for something more. Its transits can feel magical, confusing or both at once. Neptune urges us to trust our intuition but also warns us not to believe every fantasy story we tell ourselves about who we are.
Generationally, Neptune shapes cultural dreams and disillusionments. It shows what society idolizes, escapes into or eventually wakes up from.
Neptune understands, dissolves and eludes. The people that Neptune represents are dreamers, ghosts, angels and nomads. Neptune rules Pisces.
Pluto doesn’t knock. It arrives with a flashlight and insists we look at everything we’ve buried. This is the planet that bring deep transformation, power struggles and irreversible change into your life.
Pluto governs:
Pluto transits are not gentle, but they are honest.
They expose what is corrupt, stagnant or no longer sustainable and then they dismantle or purge it.
Whatever, or whomever, survives a Pluto transit experience is stronger, truer and permanently altered.
On a generational level, Pluto marks profound shifts in power structures, economics and social taboos. In personal astrology, Pluto shows where we confront our deepest fears and discover our hidden strength.
Pluto transforms, buries and rebirths. The people that Pluto represents are crisis workers, the taxman, demons, coercers and the Grim Reaper. Pluto rules the fixed water sign of Scorpio the Scorpion.
⠀
Together, the outer planets operate far beyond personal preference. They are less concerned with happiness and more invested in evolution and the survival of the fittest. Their movements describe the long, messy, fascinating process of becoming both individually and collectively.
The outer planets show us that astrology isn’t just about understanding yourself. Rather it’s about understanding why the universe occasionally pulls the rug out from under you and calls it growth.
Here are a few more articles about the outer planets.

This article is part of my Basic Natal Astrology series, where I explore deeper chart analysis for practicing and aspiring astrologers.
Understanding sign rulerships is a foundational step in natal astrology. Every zodiac sign has a planet (or luminary) that governs its expression. This ancient system forms the backbone of chart interpretation and helps explain why each sign behaves the way it does. In this article, I’m going to explore the twelve signs and ten planets. I’ll tell you how the individual sign rulerships of planets came to be, and also which planet rules each sign today. Alison
When I started learning astrology way back, I could never see the rhyme or reason why each sign had a different ruling planet.
It started with Aries and Mars so I couldn’t bring the two together. So back then I just learned them by rote, so I knew which planets ruled which sign.
It was only about two years into my astrology learning that I finally discovered the ancient logic behind why Mars rules Aries, and Scorpio for that matter, and suddenly it all made sense.
So, by you reading this you are getting ahead of the pack with some more astrological insights that will give you something to think about during the next week.
I always say I like to do the type of astrology that keeps the astro conversation going and this article will definitely slot into that.
The zodiac is divided into twelve 30° sections known as the signs. Each sign carries a unique energetic signature. In a broad stroke, the signs describe how planetary energy is expressed.
Aries is assertive bold and ready to take the first step when others hesitate. This sign thrives on momentum and teaches us how to begin with courage.
Taurus is steady sensual and deeply grounded. With Taurus we learn patience loyalty and the value of creating something that lasts.
Gemini is curious communicative and quick on its feet. This sign brings mental agility and reminds us to stay open to new ideas and conversations.
Cancer is nurturing protective and intuitive. It understands emotional safety and shows us how to care for ourselves and others with sincerity.
Leo is creative confident and radiant. It shines through self-expression and inspires us to celebrate our talents with warmth and generosity.
Virgo is analytical practical and meticulous. With Virgo we refine improve and bring thoughtful order to our daily lives.
Libra is harmonious aesthetic and relational. This sign seeks balance and teaches us the art of connection and cooperation.
Scorpio is intense transformative and magnetic. It moves through life with depth and reveals the power of honesty inner strength and emotional rebirth.
Sagittarius is expansive adventurous and philosophical. It explores new horizons and encourages us to seek meaning wisdom and freedom.
Capricorn is disciplined ambitious and structured. This sign builds carefully and shows us how steady effort leads to long term success.
Aquarius is innovative humanitarian and unconventional. It brings fresh ideas and reminds us of the importance of community and progressive thinking.
Pisces is mystical compassionate and imaginative. It moves through life with sensitivity and invites us to dream feel and trust our inner world.
Each sign’s qualities come from the planet that rules it and its planetary ruler is the lens through which the sign expresses itself.
In traditional astrology, we use the 10 planetary bodies (including the Sun and Moon, known as the luminaries).
Each planet represents or governs a different part of human experience.
The Sun represents your identity, vitality and purpose.
The Moon represents your emotions, instinct and needs.
Mercury represents your thinking, speaking and learning.
Venus represents your love, beauty and harmony.
Mars represents your drive, desire and action.
Jupiter represents your growth, luck and wisdom.
Saturn represents your structure, responsibility and maturation.
Uranus represents your innovation, rebellion and awakening.
Neptune represents your dreams, spirituality and dissolution.
Pluto represents your power, regeneration and depth.
These planets act as agents in the chart. Where they fall shows what part of life is activated; the sign they occupy describes how their energy plays out.
The idea of sign rulership comes from the classical astrologers of the ancient world. In the traditional system, rulerships were assigned based on planetary position from the Earth and Sun.
Before the discovery of recent planets which are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the old astrologers assigned the five planets plus the Sun and Moon (the visible planets) to the twelve signs.
They arranged the luminaries in the center, assigning:
From there, and specifically from the sensitive cusp between Cancer and Leo, (known as the origin point) the five remaining planets were given rulership of the signs outward in order of their distance from the Sun.
Note that each planet gets a passive and an active sign and each planet is aligned with a particular aspect:
Mercury was given Gemini an air sign and Virgo an earth sign. Both of Mercury’s signs are semi-sextile the origin point. Thus, the semi-sextile is the aspect of Mercury.
Venus was given to Taurus her earth sign and Libra her air sign and both signs are sextile the origin point. Thus, the easy going little good aspect, the sextile, is the aspect of Venus the lesser benefic.
Mars was allocated to Aries his fire sign and to Scorpio his water sign and both signs are square the origin point. Thus, thesquare the little difficult (hard) aspect is the aspect of Mars the lesser malefic.
Jupiter was given to Sagittarius a fire sign and Pisces a water sign and both signs are trine the origin point. Thus, the trine, the big good (soft) aspect, is the aspect related to Jupiter the greater benefic.
Saturn was given to Capricorn his earth sign and Aquarius his air sign and both signs are opposite the origin point. Technically the quincunx as well but the opposition dominates. Thus, the opposition, the big difficult (hard) aspect, is the aspect of Saturn the greater malefic.
This created a perfect, symmetrical rulership pattern for all of the know planets at the time.
Watch this video on How the Signs got their Ruling Planets which I created a few years ago for more information.
When the outer planets were discovered, less than three hundred years ago, modern astrologers at the time assigned these new planets to signs whose qualities they felt they matched.
Uranus to Aquarius as it is radical and progressive.
Neptune to Pisces as it is mystical and boundless.
Pluto to Scorpio as it is deep and transformative.
These modern rulerships exist right alongside the traditional ones. Many astrologers, including myself, use both the traditional and the modern rulerships in their practice.
Here is a clear, I hope, list of both traditional and modern rulerships:
Traditional ruler: Mars
Fiery, assertive Aries channels Mars’ raw drive.
Traditional ruler: Venus
Taurus expresses Venus through pleasure, beauty, and stability.
Traditional ruler: Mercury
Quick-thinking Gemini embodies Mercury’s communication.
Traditional ruler: The Moon
Cancer’s emotional depth mirrors lunar sensitivity.
Traditional ruler: The Sun
Leo shines with solar creativity and confidence.
Traditional ruler: Mercury
Virgo channels Mercury through analysis and refinement.
Traditional ruler: Venus
Libran diplomacy and aesthetics reflect Venusian harmony.
Traditional ruler: Mars
Modern ruler: Pluto
Scorpio’s intensity comes from Mars’ passion and Pluto’s transformative power.
Traditional ruler: Jupiter
Jupiter brings Sagittarius adventure, optimism and wisdom.
Traditional ruler: Saturn
Capricorn reflects Saturn’s discipline and ambition.
Traditional ruler: Saturn
Modern ruler: Uranus
Aquarius blends Saturn’s structure with Uranus’ innovation.
Traditional ruler: Jupiter
Modern ruler: Neptune
Piscean compassion mixes Jupiter’s vision with Neptune’s imagination.
Sign rulerships help you as an astrologer to connect the dots between the planets and the zodiac signs.
Once you understand which planet rules which sign, and the reasoning behind those pairings of sign and planet, you will be able to interpret birth charts with more depth and nuance.
Sign rulers as a component of Basic Natal Astrology is rather essential for beginners, and it’s a cornerstone of all your future astrological study.

Astrology seems to have answers for just about everything, and money is no exception. One of the questions I hear most often from clients (apart from love) is about their finances. It’s such a hot topic, and over the years I’ve seen how differently it can show up in people’s charts. Everyone has their own unique money story.
In this piece, I’m going to focus on the two main financial planets. When I look at these in a chart, alongside other money indicators, I often see patterns that really resonate with clients and help them understand their relationship with money in a whole new way.
Listen to our recent podcast episode about Financial Planets.
The two main financial planets are Venus and Pluto.
Venus is the natural ruler of the second house which is the traditional house for money. This house is also associated with Taurus. Venus rules Taurus.
Pluto is the second important financial planet. Pluto rules your commitments, outgoings or debts through the eighth house which in the natural wheel is associated with Scorpio. Pluto rules Scorpio.
The main things to look for with Venus and money are:
The main things to look for with Pluto and money are:
If the two financial planets, Venus and Pluto, have an aspect between them it bodes well for your finances. They will work together through the aspect.
In general, Ptolemaic aspect have an orb of 8° and 4° for a sextile. Venus as the faster if the two planets, will either be applying or separating from an aspect with Pluto.
The situation has as yet to come to a head. Wait
When Venus is separating from an aspect to Pluto the situation has passed. It could be that the moment has gone.
Always consider if Venus and Pluto, when in an aspect with each other, are disassociate as this weakens the bond. This used to be called out of sign aspects.
Example
If Venus is at 28° Libra and Pluto is at 2° Scorpio they are in a disassociate conjunction.
It’s always interesting to look at what is coming up with the transits.
When Venus transits your second house you are more likely to get a monetary boost. When Venus conjoins the ruler of your second house you are likely to get financial benefits in some way.
When Venus is direct, money flows positively. When Venus is retrograde, money can be stalled and interest rates will likely hold or fall.
When Pluto transits your eighth house you will have to attend to your debts. This is the time to transfer your commitments and pay down what you owe.
When Pluto is direct lending scan be a regular part of life. When Pluto is retrograde avoid taking on extra credit and loans. Watch out as interest rates will probably rise and kill you. Avoid signing mortgage contracts when Pluto is retrograde.
Venus and Pluto are often considered the key financial planets in astrology. Together, they can reveal valuable insights about your overall relationship with money, resources and security as shown by your chart.
Venus reflects how you attract wealth, what you value and your natural ability to create abundance.
Pluto brings depth and transformation, showing where financial power struggles, hidden resources or opportunities for regeneration may emerge.
By looking at both of the financial planets in your chart, you can gain a clearer picture of your monetary patterns, strengths and the deeper lessons tied to your ultimate prosperity.

You know that feeling when life suddenly gets really serious? When the universe seems to be asking you to grow up, take responsibility, and face the stuff you’ve been avoiding? That’s Saturn doing what it does best.
Saturn has earned its nickname as the “Planet of Karma” and honestly, it’s spot on. While other planets zip through your astrological chart like they’re late for a meeting, Saturn takes its sweet time, about 2.5 years in each zodiac sign. This isn’t just cosmic window shopping. Saturn means business, which may be stressful, but is helping you become the person you’re meant to be.
So, what does Saturn represent in astrology?
Well, here’s the thing about Saturn: it’s not out to randomly mess with your life.
It’s actually more like that teacher who actually cared enough to push you, even when you didn’t want to be pushed. This planet seeks to activate the consequences of your past choices, but not in a vindictive way…more like a cosmic mirror reflecting back what you’ve put out there.
Been cutting corners at work? Saturn’s transit might bring professional challenges that force you to step up. Avoiding those tough conversations in your relationship? Don’t be surprised when those issues come back with compound interest. It’s not punishment, it’s accountability.
The beautiful thing about Saturn is that its lessons unfold slowly. Unlike instant karma that hits you like a lightning bolt, Saturn gives you time to really understand what’s happening and why.
It’s karma with a learning curve.
If you’ve ever been through a major Saturn transit, you’ll recognize this pattern. It’s like emotional boot camp, but with a purpose:
Saturn makes you painfully aware of something you’ve been ignoring. Maybe it’s that relationship that’s been slowly poisoning your happiness, or the career dream you keep putting off, or that old wound you refuse to heal. Suddenly, you can’t unsee it.
Well, it’s where things get interesting (and by interesting, I mean dramatic). You resist the
change and try to make the old way work just one more time. You might even convince yourself everything’s totally fine. Spoiler alert: it’s not, and deep down you know it.
To move forward, Saturn forces you to surrender, and something in your life collapses. It might be your ego, your carefully laid plans, or a cherished illusion about how things “should” be. This phase feels awful, but it’s absolutely necessary. You can’t build something new on a shaky foundation.
This is when the real work begins. You start rebuilding, but this time with humility and wisdom.
Saturn loves this stage because you’re finally doing what needs to be done, not what you want to do.
Bearing fruit, this usually arrives by the time the transit ends. You emerge stronger, wiser, and more grounded. The struggle was worth it, and you can see that clearly now. You’ve leveled up in the most authentic way possible.
The secret to thriving during Saturn transits isn’t to fight them, it’s to collaborate. Here’s how to make Saturn your ally:
Saturn rewards consistency over quick fixes.
That side project you keep thinking about? Start it now, but commit to the long game. Saturn doesn’t hand out instant rewards, but the results you build during its transit are worth the wait.
Think of it like planting an oak tree, you won’t see the full majesty immediately, but with patience and care, you create something beautiful and lasting.
Saturn’s favorite question is: “What’s your part in this?”
During its transits, you’ll face areas where you’ve been avoiding responsibility. Instead of playing the victim, get curious about where you might have cut corners or ignored your duties.
This isn’t about shame, it’s about honest self-reflection that leads to real growth.
Saturn loves discipline, but not the punishing kind. So, you don’t have to equate it to some sort of karmic debt.
It prefers the liberating kind, the structure that actually makes your life easier and more meaningful. Use this transit to build sustainable routines and set boundaries that support your long-term goals. Think of it as cosmic Marie Kondo-ing your life.
Saturn’s timing is rarely your timing, and that’s entirely the point, but not in a dangerous way.
This transit teaches you that real growth happens in the waiting. When things move slowly, it’s not because the universe is working against you, it’s because you’re being prepared for something bigger than what you originally imagined.
Here’s what most people miss about Saturn transits: they’re not punishment, they’re purification.
Saturn strips away what doesn’t serve you, even when you’re emotionally attached to it. That soul-draining job? The toxic relationship? The habits that keep you small? Saturn creates circumstances that make change not just possible, but inevitable.
Saturn’s ultimate goal isn’t to make you suffer, it’s to guide you toward your highest potential. It’s like having a personal trainer for your soul. The workouts are tough, but the transformation is real.
When Saturn’s lessons feel overwhelming, remember these truths:
Every challenge contains a gift. Saturn never gives you more than you can handle, only more than you think you can handle. This is crucial to remember when everything feels impossible.
Shortcuts don’t work with this planet, nor do numbers like 777. Saturn sees through surface-level changes and demands authentic transformation. You can’t fake your way through a Saturn transit. The work has to be real and deep.
The struggle is temporary, but the wisdom lasts forever. Saturn transits end, but the lessons become part of who you are. You carry that strength and understanding with you for the rest of your life.
You’re stronger than you know. Saturn only tests you because it believes in your capacity to grow. It wouldn’t present you with challenges if it didn’t know you could handle them.
People who learn to work with Saturn’s energy rather than against it often describe their transit experiences as life-changing in the best possible way. Yes, the process can be intense, but it’s also deeply meaningful. You’re not just surviving random difficulties, you’re actively participating in your soul’s evolution.
Saturn doesn’t ask you to be perfect. It asks you to be authentic, responsible, and committed to growth. When you meet its challenges with maturity and dedication, this cosmic teacher becomes your greatest ally. You end up creating a life of genuine substance and lasting fulfillment.
Remember: Saturn’s transits feel like karma because they are karma. But not as punishment, as a sacred opportunity to become who you’re truly meant to be. The universe isn’t working against you during these times. It’s working with you to help you reach your highest potential.
And honestly? That’s the most beautiful kind of tough love there is.
