Wine Zodiac Pairings: Which Wine Compliments Your Sign?

Wine Zodiac Pairings: Which Wine Compliments Your Sign?

This Guest Post is by Nicholas Rubright from Jordan Vineyard and Winery.

Wine Zodiac Pairings

Wine and the zodiac actually have a lot in common.

Both have elements that change over time and have seasons and situations in which they shine best.

Each sign in the zodiac wheel compliments the others in a specific way, just as wines compliment different foods.

There are already so many resources out there about how to pair food and wine.

Today I’m going to do something a little different and tell you which wine compliments your zodiac sign and why.

Fire Signs

Aries and Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah Profile

Style: Full Body, Dry, High Tannin, High Alcohol
Flavors:  Sugar Plum, Blueberry, Dark Chocolate, Black Pepper, Black Tea

Though it’s a common California wine, Petite Sirah comes from a French grape called “Peloursin”. This is a rare grape, with a very flavorful profile. This wine is popular for its bold, fruity flavors which contrast its dark red color.

Aries Traits

March 21 – April 19 | The Ram

Strength: Bold, Honest, Determined, Confident
Weakness: Aggressive, Impulsive, Moody, Impatient

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac wheel. It falls under the Fire element.

As the first sign, Aries is open to new opportunities. They move through life knowing that they’re leading the way for a new adventure, even if their adventures are short lived.

As a fire sign, Aries tend to have bold emotions at all times. It is not unlike an Aries to show some tough love.

To an Aries it means they are doing right by you. This blunt honesty is what makes them a loyal friend and lover.

Petit Sirah Pairing

Petite Sirah is full of aggressive sweet and bitter notes. Similar to Aries, who are bold in their own right, giving you a refreshing solution to a problem.

Within all its powerful flavors, Petite Sirah is good for your health. The bitterness is an effect of the high level of tannins in this kind of wine.

Like an Aries’ brutal honesty can leave a sour taste in your mouth, so can a Petite Sirah.

Among its sweet notes of blueberries and sugar plums,  Petite Sirahs have the bitterness of dark chocolate and black pepper to spice things up.

Life is never boring with an Aries, this flavorful wine pairing will not disappoint.

Leo and Champagne

Champagne Profile

Style: Light Body, High Acidity, Intensely Dry
Flavors: Citrus, Peach, White Cherry, Almond, Toasty

Champagne comes in a variety of brut, dry, and sweet bodies with deep flavors that pair great with seafood or crunchy appetizers.

You know Champagne as the world’s go-to bubbly used to celebrate special occasions like weddings, holidays, and Friday nights.

Leo Traits

July 23 – August 22 | The Lion
Strength: Ambitious, Loyal, Generous, Enthusiastic, Leader
Weakness: Egoistic, Lazy, Stubborn, Arrogant

Out of all the Fire signs, Leos yearns most to make an impression.

In fact, it’s their number one priority. Their personality is powerful and attractive making them hard to miss.

As far as love languages go, this Fire sign is most fluent in Words of Affirmation. As much as they receive compliments, they’ll give them right back to you.

Leo’s warm heart and eagerness to do well in everything they set out to do is what makes up their magnetic confidence and loyalty.

However, if Leos are mistreated, they won’t hesitate to move on from what is making them unhappy.

Champagne Pairing

A Leo’s loyalty is unmatched so long as it’s reciprocated.

They know what they deserve and will not budge. Fire signs need the proper attention to feel someone is worth the affection they are giving.

When you don’t fulfill the needs of a Leo, their confidence dwindles. Just like a Champagne left unattended, that can’t help but go flat.

Both Champagne and Leos can be dry or sweet depending on their style.

Regardless of the details, there is no better pair to celebrate with than Leos and Champagne.

Sagittarius and Malbec

Malbec Notes

Style: Full Body, Dry, Low Acidity, Low Tannin, High Alcohol
Flavors: Red Plum, Blackberry, Vanilla, Tobacco, Cocoa

Like many other wines, Malbec originated in France. However, most vineyards that produce this wine are in Argentina.

Malbec has a deep and sweet full body bound to leave you wanting more. It’s cocoa and vanilla tones give this red wine a smooth finish every time.

Sagittarius Traits

November 22 – December 21 | The Archer
Strength: Idealistic, Adventurous, Persistent, Optimistic, Romantic
Weakness: Competitive, Impulsive, Impatient, Overachiever, Blunt

Sagittarians are the social butterflies among the zodiac. They are known to be very positive and outgoing. They are always up for sharing information with others.

As the Archer, they seek out as much knowledge as they can find.

A Sagittarian’s curiosity is limitless especially regarding love, philosophy, and religion. They yearn to be free, therefore knowledge and adventure is what they pursue most. This can make them a bit stubborn, as they hate being told the can’t do something.

Malbec Pairing

Malbec is a fun and strong wine with strong notes of oak and black fruits.

As the last of the Fire signs, Sagittarians can be as aggressive in their passion as they are in their truth-seeking.

Unlike other wines, a Malbec’s finish does not last, and the same can be said with the adventures of a Sagittarius.

Just like Aries, Sagittarians are very good at starting new ventures but are not the best as finishing them. Without looking back at how their last one ended, they’ll embark on a new one.

Earth Signs

Taurus and Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon Profile

Style: Full Body, Dry, High Tannin, High Alcohol
Flavors: Black Cherry, Black Currant, Baking Spices, Cedar

Cabernet Sauvignon is among the safest choices when selecting a red wine. It has a strong full body with a balance of fruits and spices.

This California wine is easy to pair with a variety of unexpected foods.
Sure, red meat is an obvious pairing, but get yourself some dark chocolate with this wine, and you’ll be dreaming about it later.

Taurus Traits

April 20 – May 20 | The Bull
Strength: Loyal, Dependable, Patient, Grounded
Weakness: Possessive, Aggressive, Uncompromising

Earth signs tend to do things to get rewarded.

Taurus is no exception. People who fall under this sign will work hard for the benefits they earn.

Along with their work ethic, a Taurus is dependable knowing that they will earn respect and other prizes.

However, they know it’s a two-way street and remain aware that their work is ongoing.

This is where their patience comes in.

As hopeless of a romantic as they can be, a Taurus is always on the defense.

You must first earn their trust before they feel safe giving you theirs in return.

Cabernet Sauvignon Pairing

Cabernet Sauvignon is a sensual red wine that you learn to love and trust – not unlike a Taurus.

The sensual undertones of the wine’s flavor evoke black fruits and spices.

These undertones are found in Taurians too, they’re one of the most sensual signs on the wheel.

Both the sign and wine have a range of earthy flavors with a strong body, and dry style.

Virgo and Chardonnay

Chardonnay Notes

Style: Full Body, Dry, Medium Acidity, High Alcohol, Little to No Tanning
Flavors: Yellow Apple, Starfruit, Pineapple, Vanilla, Butter

Chardonnay was originally harvested in large quantities in the Burgundy region of France. The variety of flavors a Chardonnay offers is not limited to the list above.

When fermented and aged in oak, it develops spicy, almost bourbon-like notes, making it the rich white wine we love.

Virgo Traits

August 23 – September 22 | The Maiden
Strength: Strong, Hardworking, Observant, Analytical, Sophisticated
Weakness: Intense, Dominating, Perfectionist, Shy

Virgos have a very practical way of making their plans.

Like Taurus, this Earth sign doesn’t mind putting in the work, as they realize how the little things can add up to the big picture.

Virgos are known to be the most sophisticated on the zodiac wheel. Both their work and honest advice are delivered clearly so that you won’t misunderstand what they mean.

It is their graceful advice and willingness to help that make Virgos great friends.

Chardonnay Pairing

It takes a lot of dedication to make Chardonnay the elegant wine it is, much like the dedication Virgos put into their own craft.

Virgos are sophisticated in the way they talk, work, and carry themselves.

Some call it perfectionism, Virgos call it attention to detail.

Virgos are loved for their ability to compliment all the other signs just as Chardonnays are loved for their versatility in food pairing.

Capricorn and Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc Profile

Style: Light Body, Dry, Low Alcohol, Low Tannin, High Acidity
Flavors: Gooseberry, Honeydew Melon, Grapefruit, White Peach, Passion Fruit

It’s hard to confuse Sauvignon Blanc with other white wines (like Chardonnay).
When compared, you’ll note Sauvignon Blanc is full of acidity and herbal flavors.

This rich white wine is widely produced as the grape can be grown almost anywhere. The result, Sauvignon Blanc comes in a variety of ranges – from lean to bountiful.

Capricorn Traits

December 22 – January 19 | The Goat
Strength: Responsible, Disciplined, Ambitious, Practical

Weakness:Inability to be Wrong, Pessimistic, Unforgiving

Capricorns will tell you they are the “Greatest Of All Time” or these days, G.O.A.T.

This earth sign is a determined sign which doesn’t need to be asked to do what they know needs to be done.

Along with their practical sense of duty, they always strive for success. Yet they are fully aware that their success will take time. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. That’s an Earth sign for you.

Sauvignon Blanc Compatibility

Capricorns are dry with their emotions, much like Sauvignon Blanc. This is due to a Capricorn’s view of the world and their diligent traits.

Sauvignon Blanc is one-part fruits and one-part earthy notes matching Capricorn’s element perfectly.

How to Use the Wheel of Fortune

You should place your wheel on the wall near your desk and where you do your astrology work. In this way, it becomes as inspiration and a memory jogger for when you forget things.

Remember to send me a photo of your completed wheel and I will publish it on this post later. There is no time limit. Enjoy being creative and learning at the same time.

Keywords to Use

Many astrology keywords are well known and you should add these to your wheel.

When you discover a new word to describe the signs you can add them to your wheel. This is how you interpret astrology and not how I do, or the next guy does.

Be your own astrologer and develop the art so that it speaks to you.

Why stray from the true and tested keywords? Because we want to hear your voice coming through in your interpretations.

If you ask ten artists to paint a picture of an apple they will all produce a painting that represents an apple. Maybe Picasso’s apple is a bit odd but it is still an apple how he sees it.

It is the same with astrology. Every astrologer can read a chart, but each one brings their own flair to the reading. Your own words are important and this is why you need to develop your own words as well.

How we Learn as Things Change

Back in the day I was taught that the eighth house was to do with death. But I prefer to read it as a transformation either of the mind, body or the finances.

Now, blood donors and blood donations (other people’s resources) are shown in your eighth house.

Greek astrologers or even those in the last century may not have experienced blood donors (or had the ability to benefit from blood donation) but we have this today.

It’s the same with Instagram and Facebook being in the eleventh house. Social media and being “friends” with others is an eleventh house thing. But ten years ago FB was unknown.

Always Interpret in Your Own Words

Yes, you need to use the usual keywords to start with as you learn astrology. It is the language of astrology. But as you develop your own astrological voice I urge to use your own words. This may take a while but I encourage you to take ownership of the astrology you do.

If you want a cookie-cutter reading you can go to the internet and find a free site that prints preprinted pages of interpretations.

But, if you want to be a good astrologer you need to do your own thing. Your own thing comes from the internal dynamics of your own chart.

Be yourself. Don’t be just a human computer churning out information with no discernment for the value of what you produce, rather be yourself.

Doodling

When I attend lectures I often find myself doodling in the margins as the speaker talks and I thought about this for a while and at my workshops and lectures.

When I taught every evening and four classes a week my students would come to class with their binders and stuff their notes from class into them. It occurred to me that they could do with a nice cover page for their binders so I created this page specifically to be colored in.

Each student was able to do their own color combination and it became a component of the classes. So now I give each astrology class student or workshop attendee one of original astrology themed colouring pages.

I want to share this with you now and offer you a free PDF download of one of my astro art pages.

Astrology Binder Cover Page

The idea is that you write your name in the space at the bottom and use this as the cover for your astrology binder (or file). If you are new to astrology you may not see the subtlety of the symbols peppered about this page but they will all be revealed as you learn about this exciting craft of astrology.

If you are an aspiring astrologer then you probably have a few journals, files or binders where you keep all of your exciting astrology notes, class notes, snippets and information. There is so much to learn. I get it. It can be overwhelming at times. I have created a front cover for you to use for your astrology journal.

All you have to do is download it and colour it in to your heart’s content. I’m calling these images and diagrams Astro Art and until I get a better name I’ll stick with that.

How to Colour

You can do felt pen, pen and ink, pastels or primaries. It’s up to you.vIf you like you can do more than one copy. Now you can always have something to doodle on when you find yourself in a long lecture.

Share

When you have completed your Astrology Art cover page please share it with us use the hashtag #starzart I can’t wait to see what you can do.

This year I plan to have more images for you to color in and they are coming out soon, so get those crayons sharpened.

Astrology Trading Cards

Making astrology trading cards is a creative way to do arty things and learn some astrology as well.

Anyone who is interested to explore astrology in a fun way will enjoy crafting and trading with their Astrology Trading Cards.

Other ways of getting arty with astrology are through my astrology Wheel of Fortune.

The Inspiration for Astrology Trading Cards

Astrology trading cards are a twist on the famous artists trading card when an artist would do a large painting and then make several tiny copies on these cards to give to prospective buyers, galleries and other artists in an effort to promote their craft.

The cards would be swopped between others. You don’t sell them but you give one and they give you one back.

Over time you will have a vast collection of a variety artist’s work without spending a penny. At the same time you have distributed your hard won work to people who may be interested

Size

Each card is 64mm x 89mm or 2.5″ by 3.5″ which is a standard card size.

Astrology Theme

At a group meeting each person will be given a blank copy of the trading card template. You can download a PDF copy below.

[purchase_link id=”13940″ style=”button” color=”green” text=”Download Your Template” direct=”true”]

The leader, or moderator will offer you a hat, or jar, with pieces of paper containing one word indicating an astrology feature or theme. You take one piece of paper and the word printed on it is your theme for the day.

The pieces of paper will have either one planet, house, sign or aspect as your theme for you to work on. These are the starter words and are used in the groups I guide.

Examples of words on the papers are::

  • Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto
  • Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces
  • 1st House, 2nd House, 3rd House, 4th House, 5th House, 6th House, 7th House, 8th House, 9th House, 10th House, 11th House or 12th House
  • Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine or Opposition

When I have a more advanced gathering or class I can have more advanced themes like; anticia, moiety, contra-parallel or transits.

Astrology Trading Card front and back

What you do

Say you get “Jupiter” as your astrology theme.

You write your own name in the by line on the back.

You will write the word “Jupiter” in the top block on each card on your sheet of six cards. You do this on every trading card on the page so in the end you have six Jupiter named cards with your name as your by line.

This is the fun part.

You draw the glyph and write keywords or draw images of what this theme means for each card. You can make each card the same or each one different. It does not matter how you embellish your cards but what is important is that you make something nice because you will be trading them with the other people at the end.

When you have finished you will have six detailed and coloured Jupiter trading cards.

The Trade

When you are happy with your designs and have completed the cards you cut them out. You may keep one for yourself if you like otherwise you will trade these cards with the other people who have various themes and will have made different cards.

That day you will go home with six original works of art signed by people you know and they will all be special and unique.

If you meet again the next week you can redo the hat/jar theme pull with the remaining theme prompts and over time you will grow a beautiful Astrology Trading Card collection that spans all the planets, houses, aspects and signs.

That is at least a total of about forty handy dandy astrology trading cards.

Show Us Your Cards

You may decide to make more cards you can buy actual cards in better quality cardstock and thicker thicknesses (available at Michael’s craft store) to make better cards.

As the interest in making these little cards grabs you, you can develop your style and the way you present your astrology through cards.

Every astrologer is different and each one will work with the energy of astrology in their own way.

When you finish a card take a photo and put it on Instagram or other social media with the hashtag #astrologytradingcard and we will love to see your work.

Grow Your Collection

This can be used as a learning resource for beginners and seasoned astrologers as well.

Getting Clever

In reality, the artists write their name and the title of the piece they have created on the back. You can get creative here as well. This is also a place to put your website and contact details.

More advanced astrologers who get into Astrology Trading Cards collection will make individual cards to trade with other astrologers.

Grimoire

Grimoire

by Alison Price

Your Astrological Journal or Grimoire

This year my main plan to improve the presentation of astrology for your understanding and pleasure is a little different.

I am working on the development of astro art or creative pages to help aspiring astrologers or anyone and everyone learn more about our art.

In the astro art section so far you have posts on a binder cover page to colour and a wheel of fortune to make for yourself.

Creating an astrological journal supports the multiple input method of learning and is a good way to build a resource that you can use later.

How To Use Your Astrology Journal

A Journal can be used in several ways:

  • To plan your day for things you have to do (pick up the kids and take the dog to the vet etc.) and this works best as a bullet journal.
  • It can be a “dear diary” style for capturing what did happen and how you felt about it, whatever it is.
  • Or it can be used to build a personal resource to learn and remember information and build a knowledge base that you can use for years to come.

It it the third one that we will talk about here.

How to make an astrological journal that becomes a personal resource to learn , understand and appreciate the little pieces in your chart.

Things like signs, planets and houses meanings that go to build a comprehensive chart reading.

The Benefits of Journaling

Your brain remembers things easily if it knows them via more than one means of input.

Teachers read aloud, or make you draw pictures, or glue a collage from dried macaroni, or do a play like astro drama to reinforce your knowledge.

The variety or ways to learn is important because the information arrives in your memory through different channels.

This is why just reading books makes it harder to learn stuff.

In the multiple activity way of gaining knowledge, what you know can be retrieved in snippets through thoughts like, “Oh gosh, now what do I know about Jupiter in Virgo?”

You will get better at remembering the many things that you need to know to read a chart by writing and drawing in your astrological journal.

Which Journal to Choose?

There are a few points to consider and choices to be made for a journal that is good to use for astrological journaling.

If you are going to invest your time and energy creating a beautiful astrological journal you might as well get a decent journal in the first place.

Size does matter

The best size is A5 or about 6″ x 8″ because this is easily carried in your bag and can be whipped out on a plane or at dinner. Who does that?

If you choose a size smaller (say 3″ x 5″) it will work as a pocket journal, but will get full quicker.

You can think of this one as your on-the-go journal, or field journal, which is best to jot down ideas while you are out and about or at a conference or lecture.

When you get home you can transfer the gems of knowledge to your main A5 journal. This process serves learning.

Paper quality

Can you see through the pages in your journal?

If you can, the paper is too thin and too cheap.

Get a better quality book.

I like the Moleskine A5 plain paper journal and the Leuchhturm1917 dotted bullet journal.

Each year I buy a few new journal books and I have one for each year but that’s another story.

How to Use Your Astrological Journal – Basic Layout

Title page

You will have a title page which is usually the very first page in the main body and not the inside flap page which is thicker than normal.

State your journal name.

Typically this will be “My Astrological Journal” or “My Journey into Astrology” or something in that vein.

Contents page

Open to the first double page.

This will be a contents overview and here you can specify the deeper level of detail that you want. The choice is yours.

This will help you gauge the number of pages you need between each section.

For instance if you have 12 signs you may need 12 (or 24) pages.

This depends on how large your journal is to start with.

How to plan your astrological journal with sections and segments

For each main section like natal signs you will make a title page on the right hand side.

You will do a section title page for each main section in your contents page.

It is best to add a tab sticking out at the right for your main sections and perhaps your segments.

Signs Summary Journal Pages

Signs

This is a summary page to note things about the zodiac signs.

Signs Journal Page

This signs full spread shows the signs in the natural wheel and some main keywords for each sign.

The ruling planet is shown in the inner wheel for each sign.

Elements and Modes Journal Pages

See how this element and mode table can help you work out each sign.

You can perhaps draw this table and place your planets in their corresponding signs from your chart to show which planets your have in each sign.

The colours relate to the signs.

Planets Journal Page

  • 1st to 12th houses
  • Planets in the first house, in the second house etc.
  • House systems

Aspects

Aspects of longitude

  • Soft aspects
  • Hard aspects
  • Neutral aspects

Aspects of declination

FORECASTING SECTION pages

  • Transits (outers)
  • Eclipses
  • Solar returns
  • Secondary progressions (inners)
  • Firdaria
  • Profections
  • Solar arc directions
  • Summary

You can do as much detail and depth as you wish. If you are just starting out with astrology I suggest the following sections, natal and forecasting and keep it simple.

Going deeper means a page for each planet in sign and house and deeper still is nice-to-haves about astrology like eclipses or the oriental planet.

Tree of Life

The tree of life is a symbol of the full cycle from root to tip.

Trees are leaned heavily on for our survival.

They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

If you are stuck on a desert island you can build handy items like boats and shelter with the wood from trees.

Paper that we used every day often comes from trees.

Art Tip

Make sure to center your circle on the page not like mine which is a little off to the left.

Herb Garden Layout

This is a classic herb garden layout with a central circle and four quadrants adjacent and larger gardens in this pattern have more quadrants.

Here I drew the four main beds of herbs.

  • Medicinal herbs
  • Aromatic herbs
  • Indigenous herbs
  • Culinary herbs

If you cook with herbs make sure that your fertilizer and mulch is organic and not synthetic.

The aromatic bed has plants for pot potpouri and perfume basics.

Indigenous herbs are local to your area they different for everyone.

Medicinal herbs are where traditional healing herbs come from, so know what you are doing here.

The Four Elements

The four elements align with the compass points

  • Fire – South
  • Earth – North
  • Air – East
  • Water – West

Polarity

The symbols relate to the active (masculine) and passive (feminine) polarities.

The upwards pointing triangle for masculine elements is symbolic of an erect manhood.

The downwards pointing triangle for feminine elements is symbolic of a woman’s pubic area.

Spring Poem

Pippa Passes by Robert Browning.

Summer Poem

From A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.
