Synastry: Polarity and Element Compatibility

Relationships

Sign Components

All charts will be interpreted for their basic signs and sign components or polarity, element.

However, when you look at two people’s relationship there are a few more details which can shed light on the connection they have with each other.

If you need to go back to basics you can check out these articles for more clarity before you move forward with your relationship analysis between two people.

Polarity

Sign Polarity

Polarity in astrology describes how signs express and respond to energy. As you move through the zodiac the polarity alternates sign by sign beginning with Aries which carries the active polarity.

Traditionally the active polarity has been called masculine or positive while the passive polarity has been called feminine or negative. Modern astrology tends to move away from the language of positive and negative as it implies value judgements that are not accurate or helpful.

Polarity is not about better or worse. It is about direction and style.

In broad terms, active signs project energy outward. They initiate, act, decide and engage with the world directly. Passive signs receive energy inward. They respond, process, integrate and adapt to what is happening around them.

Active signs tend to eject energy into the world through action expression and movement. Passive signs absorb energy through reflection feeling and consolidation. Both sides are essential. One begins the process. The other sustains and gives it form.

Energy Exchange

In relationships polarity describes how two people exchange energy. Some pairings spark through contrast while others feel comfortable through similarity. Understanding polarity helps explain why certain connections feel immediately dynamic while others feel quietly supportive.

The six signs in the active polarity are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius.

The six signs in the passive polarity are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.

Active Polarity

Fire and Air Elements

Fire and air are known as the active elements. When these elements meet in synastry there is movement energy and momentum. Things tend to happen quickly.

Motivation is shared and neither person needs excessive explanation to feel understood. With this combination there is a sense of recognition and an ease around initiative and expression.

These combinations thrive on ideas enthusiasm and forward motion. The challenge is not in the starting but in sustaining focus and grounding what begins.

Fire and Fire

When two fire dominant people come together the connection is immediate and lively. Each recognizes familiar qualities in the other such as confidence passion and the desire to lead.

Both partners naturally promote themselves and encourage independence. This can be inspiring but it may also strain the partnership if neither wants to yield or slow down.

At best each pulls the other forward with courage and optimism. At worst it becomes a clash of wills or a competition for center stage.

This pairing needs shared goals and conscious cooperation to keep the fire warming rather than burning.

Fire and Air

Fire and air usually get along with little effort. Air feeds fire with ideas and perspective while fire energizes air with purpose and action. Together they generate excitement, curiosity and forward thinking.

This combination enjoys planning, dreaming and initiating new projects. There is an innate enthusiasm supported by logic and vision. Conversations are lively and motivating and the relationship often feels stimulating rather than heavy.

The key with this combination is to follow through. Fire wants action and air can stay in the realm of ideas. When they work together intentionally this couple can be both inspired and effective.

Air and Air

Air with air creates a strong mental and social bond. Each person mirrors the other’s curiosity, intellect and need for communication. Ideas bounce easily between them and conversation flows without effort.

This is a meeting of minds where understanding each other comes through words, shared interests and mutual curiosity. The relationship often has a social tone and thrives on connection with others.

The challenge here is momentum. There can be plenty of discussion but less action. A little less conversation and a little more doing helps bring balance. When grounded this pairing excels at collaboration learning and shared vision.

air-air-element

Passive Polarity

Earth and Water Elements

Earth and water are known as the passive or receptive elements. In synastry these combinations emphasize feelings, stability, memory and response rather than speed or initiative. These relationships tend to grow quietly over time. They are shaped by care, habit and shared emotional or practical needs.

Earth gives form and structure. Water brings feeling and sensitivity. Together they can create something enduring.

Earth and Earth

When two earth dominant people come together there is an immediate sense of familiarity. Each recognizes the other’s values around reliability, practicality and common sense. Mutual respect grows from shared priorities and a solidly grounded approach to life.

This couple builds slowly and steadily. Over time they can create a solid dependable relationship that withstands pressure.

However, comfort can slide into complacency. There is a risk of taking each other for granted or staying together out of habit rather than conscious choice.

When challenged this pair is resilient. They will struggle for survival together and rarely abandon what they have built even long after it is over. Adding novelty and emotional expression keeps this bond alive.

Earth and Water

Earth and water usually feel drawn to one another but their rhythms differ. This is a reactive rather than an initiating partnership. One responds to circumstances while the other seeks security.

Physical and sensual contact is especially important here. Touch, routine and shared space ground this relationship. Water may feel that earth is too blunt or emotionally rough at times. Earth may feel that water is overly sensitive, moody or easily overwhelmed.

Motivation can lag unless there is a shared goal. When balance is eventually found earth provides containment while water softens and nourishes. Together they can create a deeply supportive bond.

Water and Water

Two water dominant people form an intuitive emotionally attuned couple. They often react instinctively in the same way and can easily understand each other without many words. Memory, feeling and shared history play a strong role.

This pair may cling to the past and spend a great deal of time reminiscing. Emotional cycles can become highly intense. Moody phases, anxieties or phobias may echo between them and mutual resentment can quietly build up if their feelings are not expressed clearly.

At the same time this combination can be highly creative. When focused it supports effective action especially in artistic or caring pursuits. Emotions can run hot which means sparks can fly and flares can occur.

Water with water often needs the influence of a contrasting element to prevent emotional burnout. Fire, air or earth influences in the charts may help bring some balance, direction and perspective.

Awkward Element Combinations

When Elements Speak Different Languages

Some elemental pairings do not flow naturally. This does not mean they are doomed. It means the two people experience life through very different filters.

These combinations need extra awareness, patience and effort from both sides. When handled well these couples can be deeply strengthening to each other because each partner develops qualities which they do not naturally lead with.

Fire and Earth

Fire and earth tend to form a bond that must be consciously blended. This is the meeting of spirit and matter or inspiration and practicality.

Earth can curb fire’s enthusiasm by insisting on realism, structure and results. Fire may feel engulfed, stifled or slowed down. From fire’s point of view earth lacks imagination and takes the joy out of things. From earth’s perspective fire is impulsive, unreliable or impractical.

Yet this pairing has real potential. Fire brings ardor courage and vision. Earth brings loyalty endurance and has follow through. When imagination and common sense are respected rather than being dismissed, this combination can build something lasting.

Fire and Water

Fire and water often struggle with emotional temperature. Water can dampen fire’s enthusiasm while fire can overwhelm or scald water’s sensitivity.

Fire may feel frustrated by what it experiences as emotional complexity, hesitation or moodiness. Water might feel unsafe, rushed or emotionally exposed in the presence of fire’s directness and intensity.

This pairing needs gentleness and emotional intelligence. Supportive placements such as Jupiter in Pisces can help soften reactions and bring compassion understanding and forgiveness into the bond.

Air and Earth

Air and earth combine theory and practice. On paper this sounds useful and yet in daily life it perhaps can feel dry or strained.

Air becomes frustrated with earth’s slow cautious approach. Earth is skeptical of air’s unconventional ideas and dislikes plans that lack tangible outcomes. Earth often wants physical presence and consistency while air prefers space, movement and detachment.

Earth may feel that air’s private thoughts or fantasies are a form of a betrayal. Air may feel constrained or judged. Despite all this, this pairing can work very well in practical or business settings where each supply what the other lacks.

Placements such as Mercury in Virgo or Saturn in Libra help by adding clarity fairness and structured communication.

Air and Water

Air and water struggle to reconcile intellect and emotion. Air aims to be impartial, reflective and future oriented. Water is emotionally anchored, intuitive and memory based.

Water often feels that air is insensitive or dismissive. Air may feel burdened by what it sees as excessive emotionality. Air lives in the future, while water lives in the past, which can create misunderstanding and hurt.

Air can unintentionally make water cry simply by analyzing what water feels. This pairing benefits greatly from strong inter chart connections between Mercury and the Moon which help thoughts and feelings translate more gently.

Active Combinations

Active polarity relationships show that chemistry is not just emotional. It can also be mental, energetic and driven by shared motion through life.

Passive Combinations

Passive polarity combinations show that interpersonal connections do not always rush forward. Sometimes they deepen, settle and shape themselves slowly through shared experience and feeling.

Awkward Combinations

Awkward elemental combinations are not failures. They are invitations. When both people are willing to learn each other’s language these relationships can become surprisingly rich resilient and meaningful.

 ❤️ Basic Natal Astrology

This article is part of my Basic Natal Astrology category and brings all the beginner components of interpreting a natal chart together. This includes signs, planets, houses, aspects and more. Alison

Sometimes it’s good to get back-to-basics with astrology and here I mean avoiding going down the complicated roads which are scattered liberally throughout any astrology reading or forecast. Alison

Basics

Distractions

Personally, I always like to try out any new technique or astro hack that I’ve happened upon in the past week. This could be anything from checking a Mars to Saturn cross chart aspect to idly exploring the Part of Marriage for a couple whom I’ve just met.

Sometimes it fun to get into the highfaluting parts of astrology readings and there certainly are many of them, but now and then I like to get back to the basics.

Cornerstones

The astrology basics are the signs, planets, houses and aspects, the backbone of chart reading if you will. These four cornerstone components when fully understood will help you provide a better reading for you family, friends and clients. It’s a bit like going back to school to relearn what you think you know.

We all do it.

You’ve been reading charts for ten years and you think you know it all. But to spend a day or two each month revisiting the basics of chart components will stand you in good stead for the charts you will read later this year.

Back to Basics Podcast Episode

For some quick insights listen to our Back to Basics Starzology Astrology podcast episode where Arwynne and I discuss some ideas on learning more astrology to benefit yourself and your clients.

Signs

Capricorn

You know which sign is your weakest one. You know, the one that you’re not really sure of and can never remember the keywords for. For me that tends to be Capricorn. I’m constantly going back over my notes to understand this sign better.

That Capricorn is quincunx my Leo Sun is part of the equation. I’m constantly having to adjust my ideas on the cardinal earth sign as the years go by.

Pisces

The other sign which is quincunx my Leo is Pisces, but here I do have an advantage.

In my life I am fortunate to know a delightful load of mutable water people. My mother, father, sister and daughter are all Pisces.

I am almost swimming in Pisces energy and have been aware of it in action all my life. No surprise there, only that they do what they do.

It all about the shoes…

Planets

Drawing a Blank

Which planet do you know the least about?

You know, the one that you tend to draw a blank on when caught in conversation with your client.

For me this planet is Neptune, so no surprise there. By its very nature Neptune is elusive and a mystery.

Again, I believe (see what I did there?), I believe that it is because the sign which Neptune rules is the sign of The Fish, and that sign too is quincunx my Leo.

More on Neptune

Neptune understands, dissolves and eludes. The people that Neptune represents are dreamers, ghosts, angels and nomads. Neptune rules Pisces.

Neptune

Aspects

Quincunx

Are we seeing a pattern here?

Does this automatically mean that the aspect which I struggle with the most is the lowly quincunx at a mere 150° and with a tight orb of only 2°?

Perhaps.

Ptolemaic

I am far more confident with the big five Ptolemaic aspects which are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square and sextile. These aspects I know well and can wax lyrical about for hours.

Quintiles

Additionally, I love the five-base aspects, the quintiles and bi-quintiles. These aspects are great and show creativity (which I love) and your natural talents.

Brilliant!

Let’s have them too.

So yes, maybe when I go back-to-basics with the aspects I revisit the quincunx aspect which is five signs apart from my Sun and is the one which brings awkwardness and demands adjustments in my thinking.

Houses

12th House

Most of the houses I’m pretty strong on. I know them very well, but now and then I have to pause and perhaps you’ve already guessed it?

I often refresh my memory around the 12th houseThis is a very quiet house and is not really exciting like the 1st, 10th or 5th houses are. The twelfth house tends to be quiet, subdued, and things in it are done privately or in secret.

As an astrologer, one never really knows how someone will use the energy, or not, found in this house and what goes on behind closed doors.

Traditionally it is the house of self-undoing, of recouperation and convalescing (post-partum) and or being in solitude self-imposed (retreating) or forced upon you (incarceration).

Going Forward

Going Back

When you’ve been doing astrology for over thirty years you do know a lot and you may become complacent in your knowledge in general.

I believe that we can all benefit from some self-reflection and the action of revisiting some cornerstones of astrology to build our own solid foundation of knowledge.

You may have learned your astrology decades ago and if so, it will do you good to enliven your ideas on certain signs, planets, houses or aspects.

Seasonal

You don’t have to be doing this every day or every week for that matter. I like to do some back-to-basic work once each season. The four seasons are winter, spring, summer and autumn. They start at the solstices and equinoxes.

Because we as good astrologers are paying attention to the Sun’s annual ingresses into the four cardinal signs, it can be a great reminder to practice some back-to-basics studying for ourselves.

Extend Yourself

Take a moment to consider in which of the four cornerstones you are weakest in your knowledge.

In your astrology journal note your weakest:

  • Sign
  • Planet
  • House
  • Aspect

Awareness

Don’t feel you have to tackle all of these right now but do yourself a favor and address one weakness this season to improve your astrology knowledge for the future.

You will become a better astrologer for it and your readings for your family, friends and clients will improve as well.

Everyone benefits.

Overarch

Growth or Stagnate

It’s one thing to have twenty years of experience and another to have one year of experience twenty times. In the former you are growing and, in the latter, you are stagnant.

Make sure you develop your astrology knowledge each year through simple seasonal reflection. Actively do some self-imposed revisiting of what you thought you knew.

Born on a Cusp

Born on a Cusp

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: October 2024

Note: Signs are 30 degrees wide

Born on a Cusp

In this article I want to talk about people who were born on the cusp. A sign cusp refers to the transition point between two zodiac signs. It is the boundary where one zodiac sign ends and the next begins.

Cusp Debate

There’s some disagreement among astrologers about the exact width of the cusp and its influence. This cusp debate has to do with the width of the Sun’s influence by its actual disk which is about 0°29′.

Some astrologers believe cusp-born individuals have a unique blend of characteristics from both signs, while others strictly adhere to the sign the Sun was in at the time of birth. I am firmly of the latter persuasion. I believe that if a planet is at 29°59’ of a sign, it is in that sign. I believe that if the Sun is in 0°00’ of a sign, it is in that sign and it has taken residence.

My main reason for this is because a planet at a cusp is like a person standing in a doorway threshold from one room to the next. They are exiting the room they are leaving, but all their focus and energy is on the new room they are entering which is the new sign. I’m pretty firm on these things, but you can choose to see it differently if you wish.

Sun Sign Ingress

This all comes back down to your Sun sign. Your Sun sign is decided by the Zodiac sign that the Sun was in at the moment of your birth. Inconveniently, the Sun does not change signs at midnight.

The Sun will change signs at any time during the day. So, people who were perhaps born in the morning may have a Taurus Sun, and others born in the afternoon could easily have a Gemini Sun. This works for all the sign cusps.

Poem: Between Two Worlds

By Claude

Straddling realms of fire and earth,

A soul emerges at day’s birth.

Not quite Aries, not full Taurus,

A blend of gentle and uproarious.

One foot in passion, one in grace,

Two natures etched upon one face.

Bulls and rams clash in the stars,

As cusped child breaks through cosmic bars.

Stubborn drive meets flighty spark,

Dawn’s light pierces through the dark.

Neither here nor fully there,

A bridge between, so strange and rare.

Cusped soul, you dance on edges fine,

Two signs entwined like grasping vine.

Your path unique, a dual-starred way,

Where yesterday meets coming day.

In you, the zodiac finds its seam,

Where endings flow to new beginnings’ stream.

Embrace your gift of double sight,

Born of twilight, child of light.

Horoscope Columns

The Sun changes zodiac signs approximately every thirty days, though the exact date can vary slightly from year to year. When you read a horoscope column either online or in a magazine, the astrologer generally uses the dates listed below for when the Sun enters each zodiac sign:

  • Aries: Around March 21
  • Taurus: Around April 20
  • Gemini: Around May 21
  • Cancer: Around June 21
  • Leo: Around July 23
  • Virgo: Around August 23
  • Libra: Around September 23
  • Scorpio: Around October 23
  • Sagittarius: Around November 22
  • Capricorn: Around December 21
  • Aquarius: Around January 20
  • Pisces: Around February 19

These dates are approximate and can shift by a day or two depending on the year. The exact time of the Sun’s ingress into a new sign can also vary this is discovered when you cast the chart. So this is the simplistic way of categorizing each person by the actual date they were born. And for the general public this is normally good enough.

However, for astrologers it is not. Your clients may come to you and say, “I’m a Virgo” and when you cast the chart, you discover the’re actually a Libran.

Cusp Days

A cusp day is a day when the Sun changes zodiac signs. So typically, this is around the 20th to 22nd of each of the months. But there are two special things that you need to pay attention to with cusp days. There are two ways that need to be looked at to find the difference on cusp date.

Each Year

Each year, the actual cusp day may move from the 21st to the 22nd or even to the 20th. Every year is different. What was the cusp day this year may not be a cusp day next year.

Leap Year Reset

Because the Earth takes 365 and a quarter, plus some minutes, to go around the Sun each year. After every four years we add an additional day to the year, February the 29th, which is of course the leap year. This is the first step that realigns the Sun to the earlier cusp time.

cusp-dates-table

Capricorn Ingress

Table

From this table you can see that when the cycle starts, at the leap year, the Sun, in subsequent years, makes the ingress into Capricorn later and later on the day on the 21st. And finally, the Sun moves its ingress onto the 22nd of December.

Leap Year for Capricorn

Then at the leap year reset, the Sun once more goes back to the earlier time on the 21st of December and it slowly creeps forward each year from there. Here I’m just giving the example of the Capricorn ingress, but it’s the same for all the signs. The Sun starts off early and then each successive year is later and later in that day, or the next, until we get to the next leap year when it resets to the earlier time.

Location

From this we can see that the Sun will enter Capricorn either on the 21st or the 22nd, bearing in mind that is GMT, and it does depend on where you live in the world. If you’re very East of Greenwich, it can also be on the 19th and if you are very West of Greenwich, it can on occasion, be on the 23rd.

Leap Century Reset

400

Leap years have 366 days instead of 365, with an extra day in February. The old Julian calendar made every 4th year a leap year, but this method adds too many leap days – about 3 extra days every 400 years. Which results in us having too many leap days over time, causing the calendar to drift away from the actual seasons.

To fix this, the Gregorian calendar, created in 1582, only makes century years (like 1700, 1800, etc.) leap years if they’re divisible by 400. So, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 (a common year) wasn’t. This helps keep the calendar more strictly matched to the actual length of the solar year and the seasons.

This change shifts the calendar year to match the Earth’s orbit around the Sun far closer, keeping the seasons better aligned with the calendar.

The Year 2400

This won’t bother us astrologers, but it shows how the Sun’s path drifts slightly all the time. The year 2400 will be the next century year that’s also a leap year.

In century leap years:

  • January 1st is always on a Saturday
  • December 31st is always on a Sunday
  • February 29th is always on a Tuesday

Anaretic Degrees

Anaretic degrees refer to the final degree of any zodiac sign, specifically the 29th degree (as each sign has 30 degrees). This concept is significant in interpretation.

Anaretic Definition

The anaretic degree is 29°00′ to 29°59′ of any zodiac sign.

Anaretic Significance

These degrees are considered critical or sensitive points in a natal chart or transit.

Anaretic Interpretation

Planets or points at anaretic degrees are often seen as:

  • Unstable or in crisis.
  • At a turning point or transition.
  • Carrying extra weight or importance.
  • Representing completion or culmination of the sign’s energy.

Energy

The anaretic degree is thought to embody the most intense expression of that sign’s qualities, as if the energy is at its peak before transitioning to the next sign.

Karmic implications

Some astrologers view anaretic placements as indicating unfinished business from past lives or lessons that need urgent attention.

Transits

When planets transit anaretic degrees, it indicates a time of important decisions or changes related to that planet’s themes.

Natal

Natal planets at anaretic degrees suggest areas of life where the person feels pressure or experiences significant developments.

Interpretation

I think that while I always note planets at an anaretic degrees, they should be considered within the context of the entire chart.

Solar Returns

Birthplace

This continuous movement of the Sun as ingresses the signs is why your solar return is frequently not on your birthday even if you stay at your birthplace.

Relocation

Of course, your solar return will not be on your birthday if you move very east or west of your birthplace either. I always have my solar return the day before my birthday because I’m in Vancouver and was born in England which is a move of around eight time zones west.

Extend Yourself

Transiting Sun Ingress

See for yourself how the Sun changes times and dates for each of its ingresses into your Sun sign. I’ve done Capricorn (see table above), now you can do this experiment for your Sun sign. So, if you are a Sun Libra, do the Libra ingress.

In your astrology journal, please do the following:

  • Draw a table like the one I have above.
  • Find the precise date and time that the Sun entered your birth Sun sign this year.
  • Continue checking the exact dates and times that the Sun will ingress your own Sun sign every year until 2032, which is a leap year.
  • See if you find the realignment at each leap year to an earlier date and time.

Extend Yourself Further

Your Born-on-a-Cusp Client

Most people do not understand why if they were born on December 21st, and they’ve always thought they were a Capricorn, that their natal chart returns them to be a Sagittarius. Unfortunately, the born-on-a-cusp issue adds confusion that surrounds the astrological techniques and the astrological community, so we need to develop some clarity here.

In your astrology journal, please do the following.

  • Write a few of paragraphs and simply explain how two people who were born in different years, but on December the 21st, so they have the same birthday, why one person has a chart which returns a Sagittarius Sun, and the second person has a chart that returns a Capricorn Sun.
  • Use simple language and consider what you would say to describe this phenomenon to your client (500 words).

Mars in Gemini

Mars in Gemini

Author: Arwynne O’Neill  –   Published: July 2024

Mars in Gemini

Today I’m going to be talking about Mars in Gemini. If you’re listening to this in summer of 2024, Mars is about to enter Gemini on July 20 and will stay there until September 4. Mars moves pretty quickly so it takes about two years to go all the way around the zodiac. Due to retrograde periods, it can spend as little as six weeks in a sign to as many as seven months! Last time Mars was in Gemini was from August 20, 2022 through March 25, 2023, but this is an unusually long time for Mars to stay in one sign. It retrograded in October 2022 but it stayed in Gemini the entire time, so that’s how it can sometimes be in one sign for a very long time.

Podcast Episode

Listen to the full podcast episode below.

Mars in Gemini by transit

When Mars transits through the airy, mutable, masculine (or positive) sign of Gemini, it is considerably less focused than in some other signs. As we might expect with any placement in Gemini, there’s an intellectual, chatty, indecisive and scattered energy. In the northern hemisphere, this might be perfect timing because we are going through the middle of summer and who wants to make fixed decisions and doggedly pursue ambitions when warm weather, beach vacations and weekend barbecues beckon?

That being said, Gemini is not a bad placement for Mars and although we may at times feel restless and indecisive, with our attentions pulled in many different directions, we’re just as likely to also feel alive with sparkling, effervescent and positive energy. We might feel like chatting up new and old friends, dancing late into the night, hosting a game night with or sing along, enjoy summer fun like fireworks, festivals and street fairs. Even solitary activities like getting engrossed in an exciting book, binging a new TV show or podcast, could be excellent uses of Mars in Gemini energy.

As Robert Hand says in his seminal book, Planets in Transit, Mars is a planet of energy and it specifically rules the energy that an individual uses to maintain themselves in the face of pressures from their environment. Mars is also connected with work and physical effort and its transits often signify days when you become very energetic and vigorous. So, as Mars transits through different signs you want to look at where you have significant placements in those signs in your chart. If you have the sun in Gemini or Gemini rising or, of course, if you have Mars in Gemini, this transit will energize your chart in a significant way.

You also want to look at what house Mars will be transiting for you while it goes through Gemini. If you have Gemini rising, Mars will be transiting your first house and it will light up your personality your self-expression your identity, your self-esteem, and it could give you a great boost of self-confidence or indicate a time when you are presenting yourself to the world and this could be a great time for you because you’ll find it easier to express yourself in your naturally effervescent Gemini fashion with Mars lighting up your first house. It could be a great time to meet new people or make a great impression on people who already know you, champion a cause that’s close to your heart or undertake a self makeover to present yourself or your ideas in an exciting new way.

You also want to look at any aspects that Mars will be making to planets in your chart. If you have any major placements in Sagittarius, Mars will be transiting opposite those planets while it’s in Gemini, so this could bring conflicts with people, opposition to your ideas, impediments and obstacles that suddenly come up, hindering your movements and thwarting your ambitions or aims.

Any major placements you have in mutable signs will be affected by Mars transiting through Gemini as it will make hard aspects to all the mutable planets, including Virgo and Pisces which will receive squares from Mars in Gemini.

Mars in Gemini in the birth chart

As with any air sign, Mars in Gemini tends to have more mental energy and social activity associated with its martial tendencies. These people might be more the type to spar with you verbally then physically. They could be intellectually inexhaustible, pursuing higher education or gobbling up trivia like information junkies, memorizing movie quotes or song lyrics or sports statistics in order to repeat them at the ready anytime conversation turns to their topic of choice, or supplementing any pub trivia team with their sparkling, broad-based intellect.

These people love to exchange ideas and they’re motivated by communication, social and intellectual stimuli. They may be the type to go off on a political rant or some obscure tangent at the drop of a hat, or drone on about whatever personal topic fires their interest long past the point of exhausting others in the room. Used correctly, they could be excellent, engaging teachers or professors, journalists, radio hosts or podcasters, influencers, marketers or sales people.

Since Mars is one of the relationship planets, along with venus, we would look to Mars to find out what a person is like in relationships. Mars is the planet of desire and going after your object of affection, so people with Mars in Gemini will be the type who want to charm you with their wit, intellect, conversational moves and lofty ideas. Of course keeping their interest will be the real challenge. Mars in Gemini is not known for its ability to focus on one thing or one person for very long.

In Person to Person Astrology, Steven Arroyo says, “the essence of Mars in Gemini is that it asserts itself verbally, flexibly, cleverly, communicatively, through a variety of skills. The focus of one’s desire changes very quickly and often, easily diverted. Expresses a wide ranging friendliness, very good at making connections. Physical energy and sexual drive are affected by mentally stimulating conversations, images or curious new ideas, very open-minded.”

They may appear or behave especially youthful and embody a sort of ageless vitality and charm, flirting or putting on the charm for people of all ages and genders indiscriminately. This may be the guy who you dated just long enough to bring home to meet your parents one time and years later they still ask, “whatever happened to..?” He made an indelible impression and then flitted on to the next flower before you had a chance to make a real connection.

This is not to say they can’t commit. The wonderful thing about Mars in Gemini is that these people are genuinely interested in the thoughts and ideas of other people; they’re open-minded, curious and communicate well with their partners. If you make a lasting love connection with them, they could turn out to be a wonderfully stimulating and exciting partner for life, keeping you laughing well into old age, exploring new ideas and interests together long after other couples have settled into mutal silence.

Grant Lewi says, if you have Mars in Gemini, “you are rarely bored or boring, but you can wear yourself and others out by the ferocity of your attack on life. You are extraordinarily aware of the world around you, sense perceptions are acute, swift, probably accurate, and you are valuable in expressing what you take in. Energy flows naturally to the tongue; you are a better talker than listener. With any concentrated force, this position gains value, Without it, you scatter your energies.” He also cautions the Mars in Gemini individual to take care of their body as well as their mind. There is a danger of neglecting your physical well-being because you are so focused on mental pursuits.

Jupiter in Leo

Great Expectations

Planetary Transits

As the planets wander through the sky they change positions against the backdrop of the zodiac. This movement can be like a dance as everyone (the planets) take their place and enter the stage.

At any time, one or two of the planets will take center stage as the others fade into the background for a while. Planets in prominent positions may have a story to tell, and we listen.

Jupiter enters Leo

This time it is Jupiter as he enters the fifth sign of Leo. A fire planet (Jupiter) in a fire sign (Leo).

Up there right now the biggest planet in the solar system and the ruler of Sagittarius, and the co-ruler of Pisces, Jupiter, is entering the zodiac sign of the Lion.

Jupiter in Leo: Dates

Jupiter will be in Leo from June 30th, 2026, until July 26th, 2027.

Imagery

Hot Air Balloons: Much Like Jupiter

I often use the imagery of a hot air balloon to explain the astrological meaning for Jupiter. Balloons are big, brightly coloured and when they drift by you simply can’t miss them. Much like Jupiter.

The collective noun for balloons is a festival of balloons which brings a fun and exciting element to ballooning. Much like Jupiter.

They travel on their journey, but to who knows where? Much like Jupiter.

They are filled with hot air or gas, and balloons will explode if over-filled. Much like Jupiter.

They often broadcast a message from their sponsors or promote special events (such as at sports events) written in huge letters on the sides of the balloon. Much like Jupiter.

And I would imagine that the people who do take a ride in a hot air balloon say a prayer before launch. Much like Jupiter.

I have always fancied trusting the woven basket and journeying on a balloon flight and perhaps one day I shall. Much like Jupiter.

Benefits of Jupiter

Transiting Leo

Jupiter in Leo is especially good news for the fire signs and that means those with strong fire signs present in their birth charts.

I will tell you I am strongly Leo myself and I have been waiting for a while now for this shift in energy as Jupiter changes sign.

  • If you have anAries, Leo or Sagittarian Sun, Moon or Ascendant, Jupiter in these three signs you will benefit during the upcoming year as Jupiter goes through Leo.
  • If your business chart has the fire signs emphasized, your business can experience huge growth now.
  • If you are stronglyGemini or Libra you will see some support and some good things. You need to grasp any opportunities fleeting as they may be.
  • If you are stronglyTaurus, Scorpio or Aquarius could face the difficult side and this may suggest the over excessive situations as mentioned later.
  • Those of you with strongCancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces may not see much change although you will try to make adjustments this year.

Make the Most of Jupiter in Leo

Upside

Jupiter in Leo is upbeat, positive and outgoing. It encourages taking chances and aiming higher in life. Leo is the sign of the theatre and when planets enter the “stage” they will play their roles to perfection.

Using the theater analogy, Jupiter in Leo can either be the highly colorful swashbuckling much-loved hero or he can be an overly costumed and made up, blow-hard in a pantomime.

Challenges

The downside of Jupiter in Leo can be over-extension, over-doings things and excessive behavior. Or just too much of a good thing. Pace yourself and all will be fine.

jupiter

Transiting Jupiter

Ascendant Sign

This is for Ascendant signs.

As Jupiter moves through your chart it spends about one year in each house, expanding the topics of that area of life. Think of it as a spotlight that grows whatever it touches. The gift is opportunity. The caution is excess. Where Jupiter travels, you are invited to grow.

Aries

5th House

For Aries, creativity flourishes. Romance, children, hobbies and personal talents receive a boost. This is a joyful placement that supports self-expression. Watch speculative risks and dramatic gestures. Pleasure is good, excess is not.

Taurus

4th House

For Taurus, home and family life grow in importance. You may move, renovate or welcome new members into the household. Emotional foundations can strengthen. Be mindful of taking on more domestic responsibility than you can comfortably manage.

Gemini

3rd House

For Gemini, learning expands. Writing, teaching, speaking and short journeys are highlighted. Relationships with siblings or neighbors can improve. It is an excellent period for study and communication projects. I believe it’s best to avoid scattering your attention in too many directions.

Cancer

2nd House

For Cancer, growth focuses on money, assets and self-worth. Income can increase, or you may develop new skills that enhance your earning power. It can also be a year of generous spending. Build sustainable value rather than accumulating for its own sake.

Leo

1st House

For Leo, this is personal expansion. Confidence rises. You may feel more optimistic, visible and willing to take chances. It is a year to begin things, refresh your image and step forward. Guard against over confidence or promising more than you can deliver.

Virgo

12th House

For Virgo, growth happens quietly. Inner development, retreat, spiritual practice and completion of old cycles are supported. It can be a reflective year preparing you for Jupiter’s upcoming return to your 1st house. Avoid escapism. Use the time for meaningful closure and renewal.

Libra

11th House

For Libra, friends, networks and long term goals expand. You may join groups or reconnect with community. Hopes for the future feel possible again. Choose associations wisely rather than saying yes to every invitation.

Scorpio

10th House

For Scorpio, career and public reputation grow. Promotions, recognition and leadership opportunities can arise. It is a strong year for professional advancement. Take care not to overcommit or become inflated by status.

Sagittarius

9th House

For Sagittarius, this is a natural Jupiter house. Travel, higher education, publishing and spiritual exploration expand. You may teach, study or engage with different cultures. Guard against dogmatism or assuming you have all the answers.

Capricorn

8th House

For Capricorn, shared resources, taxes, inheritances and intimate bonds are emphasized. Financial support from others may increase. Psychologically this can be a year of deep inner growth. Avoid overextending credit or relying too heavily on others.

Aquarius

7th House

For Aquarius, partnerships grow. Marriage, business alliances and close one to one relationships can benefit. You may attract helpful people or mentors. Balance generosity with clear boundaries.

Pisces

6th House

For Pisces, work routines and health habits expand. You might take on more duties or find improved employment conditions. It is a supportive time to develop healthier daily practices. Do not overwork simply because you feel capable.

What’s in It for You?

Growth

Jupiter is the planet of growth and expansion.

It has to do with reaching for things just out of your grasp but it is the reaching that is important.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h

We like to s-t-r-e-t-c-h ourselves when Jupiter is active.

You can lift your eyes to gaze at your horizons.

Now is the time to aspire towards previously laughable dreams. Dust off your visions and start to believe.

When Jupiter is prominent by transit, and if it contacts your chart, you can raise your profile and aim for more in life.

Supported Activities

Jupiter will support activities in:

  • broadcasting
  • Promotion (self and business)
  • Publishing
  • Gaining knowledge (as opposed to information)
  • Adult education
  • Religious temperance
  • International travel
  • Cosmopolitan situations

Jupiter in Leo reinforces the theatre and daily dramas. See them for what they are.

Overarch

Optimism

As Jupiter moves through Leo, and especially if you are one of those late degree Leos receiving the triple touch to your Sun, you are being invited to rise, to expand and to be seen.

This is not about empty showmanship but about wholehearted self-expression. Keep your balloon filled with just enough fire to lift you, not so much that it bursts. Say yes to growth, yes to the stretch and yes to stepping onto your stage with courage.

If you pace yourself and stay true to your purpose, this year can mark a confident new chapter in your story.
