Your Partner’s Planets in Your Houses

Synastry

In synastry, your partner’s natal planets, when placed in your chart will be in certain of your natal houses. This inter chart interaction shows where and how a relationship is lived.

Your partner’s planets do not describe who they are here, but rather they describe what part of your life they activate with their planets.

The house is where you feel them most strongly and where the relationship naturally expresses itself.

Planet’s Influence

It depends on which of your partner’s planets is in a house of yours and it is the nature of that planet will come through.

For example, their Sun in your 7th house is a solid indicator that you see them as “marriage material” whereas their Neptune in your 7th house may indicate that you can’t quite see them, or pin them down, as a life partner.

Ideally look at the personal planets which are the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars first.

Use this article to understand which life areas a partner of yours touches and why certain relationships feel personal, practical, inspiring or intense.

How to Analyze Romantic Charts Like a Pro

Romance Charts

Potential

In astrology, the art of analyzing two charts for love potential has many approaches. No one method is better than another they complement each other.

Using multiple techniques to interpret two charts for romantic compatibility is the best way to get a deeper understanding of the relationship.

Techniques

There is basic synastry, chart shape, Venus and Mars, the Vertex, male and female planets, chart comparison, combination charts and more.

Synastry Introduction

Synastry Definition

Synastry is the branch of astrology that looks at how two people relate to one another.

It works by comparing the two birth charts to see how one person’s planets interact with the other person’s planets and chart structure. These connections describe how energy flows between two individuals. They show where there is ease, attraction, understanding, tension and growth.

Synastry does not tell you whether a relationship will succeed or fail, but rather it helps you understand the nature of the connection. It highlights why two people are drawn together what they awaken in each other and how they experience closeness conflict and commitment.

Synastry can be used for romantic relationships, friendships, family bonds and working partnerships. At its best synastry offers insight compassion and awareness rather than judgement.

Synastry is Deeper than Sun Sign Compatibility

Synastry begins where magazine or Sun sign compatibility ends.

It is not about whether Taurus and Leo get along at dinner.

It is about how two whole people meet each other in the middle through time, habit, desire and vulnerability.

When we compare two charts, we are not matching types, but rather we are watching two inner worlds lean toward each other or pull away in very specific ways.

What Synastry Can and Cannot Tell You

Synastry can show attraction patterns emotional ease friction points and long-term themes.

It cannot tell you if someone will text you back or if love will conquer all.

In general, astrology describes the overarch not the choices. What you do with the information still matters.

two-hearts

Working with Two Charts

Partners

You may wish to work with a copy of two charts, your natal chart and that of another person whom you have chosen.

It could be your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, partner or friend etc. Relationship astrology offers a few main techniques for interpreting the interaction between two people.

Types of Relationships

As an astrologer you will be asked the relationship questions like, “Is he the one?” “When will I marry?” and “Where has the love gone?” etc.

Astrologers generally focus on the typical relationship between a man and a woman.

Obviously, there are many correlations between other types of relationships such as same-sex romance, parent and child, siblings and parents (family) or two friends.

Several of the analysis techniques here can be used to interpret different types of relationships.

Permission

Before using another person’s birth chart for your comparison please make sure you have their written permission to do so.

Types of Relationships

Business Relationships

Saturn is the dominant planet for any business relationships.

Mercury is the planet for and buying or selling or for commercial relationships.

Teacher and Student Relationships

Look to Mercury for the student relationship and thinking, writing and information gathering.

Jupiter is the sage, the teacher and the knowledge base. This planet features in any teacher-student relationship.

Saturn again is the authority in a relationship.

Chiron relates to a mentor and protégé́ relationship where one person learns from another. This can also suggest an apprentice role to the master journeyman typically Jupiter or Saturn.

Family Relationships

The Moon by its aspects and house is related to all family relationships.

Planets in Cancer are concerned with family interactions.

For family matters also consider Jupiter which is exalted in Cancer.

The planet that rules the 4th house will represent family matters as well.

Romantic Relationships

Venus is the planet that rules love, attraction and romance.

Mars is the planet that rules the chase, libido and sex.459

The Sun indicates oneself in the matter and is the heart of the matter.

The Moon suggests the natural instincts and feelings towards someone.

The 5th house ruler, that is the planet that rules the sign on the 5th house cusp, and the 5th house tenants (planets in the 5th house) pertains to all love affairs.

The Vertex, when engaged relates to all pivotal relationships in life.

Marriage

The marriage planets are the same ones as for romance, but now we include Saturn for serious and enduring relationships. Saturn rules things you do for the long haul, like marriage.

The 7th house ruler, that is the planet that rules the sign on the 7th house cusp, and any 7th house tenants (planets in the 7th house) pertain to all prenatal contracts and legal marriage contracts.

Marriage itself resides in the 7th house.

Multiple planets here suggest multiple marriages or long-term serious relationships like common law partners.

The Natal Promise for Romance

Everything comes from the Natal Chart

Only what is promised in the natal chart can come to pass for each person. A planet is only as good as its natal promise.

You can determine which planets are strong or weak by the planetary complex.

Strong Natal Planet

A strong natal planet will remain a strong planet in the synastry and comparison charts.

Weak Natal Planet

A weak natal planet will remain a weak planet in the synastry and comparison charts.

Polarity, Element and Mode Count

Sign Components

Each sign can be broken down into three components, polarity, element and mode.

Counting

Quality vs quantity counting in planets means to only count the seven visible planets which are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Polarity Blends

When considering polarity blends, in general, the active signs of fire and air blend well and passive signs of water and earth people blend well.

Polarity Lack

When a person’s natal chart lacks an element, that weak element will likely be sought, in the partner.

In a chart with no fire that person will seek a partner with fire.

In a chart with no air that person will seek a partner with air.

In a chart with no earth that person will seek a partner with earth.

In a chart with no water that person will seek a partner with water.

The Four Elements

Considering the dominant element in each natal chart we can say that charts in the same polarity have basic complimentary features.

Consider the Individual

Consider the Individual

Always consider the individuals for whom you are doing the reading.

Their age and life experience is important.

Their education and or intelligence may be a factor in how they receive your interpretations.

Their social background can also play a part.

Their spiritual outlook, soul path and personal evolution towards New Age practices will also be significant.

Often the person requesting the astrology reading is tuned into New Age practices, but not necessarily their partner where you may find some resistance.

Basic Techniques of Synastry

Chart Comparison

Chart comparisons are performed by placing the planets and points from one person’s natal chart into the natal chart of the other person and vice versa.

Usually, the natal chart of the first person, placed in the inner position in the bi-wheel, holds the angles and house cusps and the outer ring shows the second person’s planets and points.

An person’s natal planets placed in your chart shows how they influence you.

Your natal planets placed in another person’s natal chart will show how you influence them.

The house placements and aspects energized by one person’s planets to another person’s chart is the basis of the chart comparison.

Working with a Pair of Charts

Defaults

When working with a pair of charts, as you do in chart comparison, it is essential that the charts are both calculated on the same astrological defaults. Do not mix them up.

The defaults I use are:

  • The same house system. I use Placidus house cusps
  • The same zodiac. Here you need to be on the tropical
  • The same lunar node calculation I use the mean node here and not the tree node.
  • The same Part of Fortune I use different day and night.

It doesn’t matter if you use another house system or zodiac to me, but just that both of the charts that you are comparing are based on the same calculations.

Synastry: Chart Shapes

Chart Shapes in Relationships

Two Parts as a Whole

When you look at two charts together the overall shape they form can tell you a surprising amount about how the couple meet life and each other.

Chart shapes can describe how planetary energy is distributed. In synastry this spread of planetary energy shows how easily two people blend their rhythms or where they may feel out of step.

Jigsaw

Some pairs of charts will click into place just like a jigsaw piece.

Chart shape analysis is not black and white or about discovering good or bad pairings. It is about understanding how two people, when together, naturally move through the world and how those movements interact when they come together.

Some relationships feel instinctively wholesome from the start. Others take more adjustment. The principles of chart shapes may help to explain why this is so.

How to Determine the Shape

What to Look For

To determine a chart shape, I only consider the planets from the Sun through Pluto.

Leave out Chiron, the Asteroids the lunar nodes the Part of Fortune the Vertex and similar points. What matters here is the core planetary spread.

Do not include any chart points like the Midheaven, Lunar Nodes, Part of Fortune or Vertex in your shape analysis.

Once you see how the planets cluster or spread around the wheel a pattern may emerge.

The Eight Basic Chart Shapes

Bundle

In the bundle chart shape, all the planets must fall within a trine. The leading and trailing planets may actually be trine to each other but this is not always the case.

A bundle chart creates focus intensity and a strong sense of purpose. Bundle people tend to be specialists rather than generalists.

bundle-chart-shape

Fan

Like the bundle but with one planet acting as a handle. That handle planet becomes a key outlet for the whole chart. The handle planet can form a grand trine with the leading and trailing planet in the group, but not always. You can also have a two-planet conjunction as the handle as well.

In a fan the energy is expressed through the handle.

In relationships this planet often plays a pivotal role.

fan-chart-shape

Bowl

In the bowl shape of natal chart, all the planets are found within one half of the chart often, but not always, held by an opposition at the rim. This is known as a rim opposition.

Bowl people feel driven to fill something missing. The rim opposition pair of planets needs close attention in synastry.

If the bowl is in the top part of the chart it acts like an umbrella.

A bowl will have a leading planet which is the one most clockwise of them all.

bowl-chart-shape-synastry

Bucket

A bucket is basically a bowl shape chart with a handle planet opposite the cluster. Again, the handle is crucial and the bucket handle can be a two-planet conjunction.

In a bucket the energy is expressed through the handle. The handle planet is typically square to the rim opposition planet, but not always. This adds tension.

Buckets shows where energy seeks expression and often where relationship themes are lived out.

bucket-chart-shape

See-saw

In a see-saw chart shape there are two groups of planets facing each other across the chart.

This chart shape has many conjunctions, oppositions and no squares.

These people are born negotiators. They naturally see both sides of a situation but may live with projected tension.

seesaw-chart-shape

Splash

In a splash chart shape the planets are spread evenly throughout the chart. This is the most common shape of chart.

Splash people are curious, adaptable and open to many experiences. They often bring variety into relationships.

splash-chart-shape

Splay

In a splay chart shape, there are three main groupings usually linked by one element. There are frequently multiple grand trines in a chart with the splay shape.

This shape suggests ease in life, talent, versatility and a selective approach to life and to bonding.

splay-chart-shape

Locomotive

In the locomotive chart shape, the planets follow one another like a train covering up to two thirds of the chart. For it to be considered a locomotion there has to be one trines worth of empty space in the chart.

The leading and trailing planets are sometimes trine to each other. Here the leading (or cutting planet) planet is important.

The locomotive shape creates momentum, drive and a strong sense of direction. There is often a feeling of always moving forward.

locomotive-chart-shape

Compatible Chart Shapes

Opposites Attract

When you lay one chart over the other in a bi-wheel look at how much of the zodiac is covered between the two charts.

Full coverage is generally supportive. Although large shared empty spaces can feel limiting over time.

Some shape combinations naturally complement each other. Not all chart shapes lend themselves to synastry compatibility, but a few of them do.

Let’s take a look at some of the combinations which support relationships between two people.

Fan and Locomotive

This is a great combination if the two charts do not overlap.

When together they cover each other’s empty space and the handle planets form a conjunction

synastry-fan-and-locomotive

Bowl and Bowl

The bowl and bowl couple is good when each partner’s planets fill the empty half left by the other. Here they complete each other.

synastry-chart-shape-bowl-and-bowl

Bowl and Bucket

A bowl and bucket person too is good when the empty spaces are covered and the bucket handle planet forms a conjunction into the partners bowl.

synastry-bowl-and-bucket

See-saw and See-saw

With two see-saw charts, when the planetary placements activate different parts of the zodiac they create trines and sextiles which soften the many oppositions. This is useful for relationships.

Sometimes there are multiple squares from one chart to another which can create inner tension or drive within the couple.

seesaw-and-seesaw

Bundle and Locomotive

With a bundle and a locomotive person, when the bundle fills the open arc left by the locomotive this combination works well for relationships.

bundle-and-locomotive

Overarch

Chart Shape

It is always useful to consider chart shape when working with synastry and bi-wheels to determine just how well two people will get along.

Chart shapes can be used for all connections in your life and not just for love and romance.

These combinations do not guarantee happiness but they can sometimes suggest an easier flow of energy because each person brings something the other naturally lacks.

Chart shapes in synastry remind us that relationships are not just about attraction. They are about balance, movement and how two lives can make room for each other.

Davison Relationship Charts

Ronald C. Davison

Ronald C. Davison (1914–1985) was a prominent astrologer in the mid-20th century, renowned for his innovative approach to relationship astrology. In the 1960s, he introduced a unique method of chart interpretation, offering a fresh perspective on understanding relationships through astrology. His approach builds on composite midpoint theory but adds a distinctive twist that has intrigued astrologers ever since.

Author of “Synastry”

Davison’s book, Synastry – Understanding Human Relations through Astrology. remains a classic resource. It explores the dynamics of interpersonal connections using astrological tools, cementing his legacy as a thought leader in synastry and relationship astrology.

The Davison Space-Time Relationship Chart

The hallmark of Davison’s contribution is the Davison Relationship Chart, which is calculated differently from a traditional composite chart:

Birthplace Midpoint

Unlike a composite chart that averages planetary positions, the Davison chart determines a physical midpoint between the two individuals’ birthplaces.

Time Midpoint

It also calculates a midpoint in time, based on the birth dates of the two individuals. This unique method creates a single chart representing the “relationship entity” as if it were an independent being.

Why the Davison Chart is Unique

The Davison chart offers insights that are more tangible and rooted in physical reality compared to composite charts. By integrating both time and space midpoints, it reflects the essence of a relationship as a distinct moment in the continuum of life, rather than just an abstract combination of energies.

Astrologers use this chart to:

  • Analyze the purpose and destiny of the relationship.
  • Uncover shared strengths and challenges.
  • Understand how the relationship might evolve over time.

Davison’s innovative thinking continues to inspire astrologers, making his techniques an essential part of relationship astrology.

Davison Chart Example

Imagine one person is born in Europe and the other in South America.

The geographical midpoint between these two locations might fall somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Davison chart is then calculated as if this midpoint were a real location, anchoring the relationship in a specific space and time.

davision-world-map

Theory of Davison Charts

A Davison chart is created by calculating the exact midpoint in time (mid-time and mid-date) and space (geographical location) between the birth times, dates, and places of two individuals. This midpoint generates a new chart representing the relationship as its own entity, with its own time, date, and location.

Key Features of Davison Charts

Mid-Time and Mid-Date

The chart reflects the exact moment halfway between the two birth times and dates.

Mid-Point in Space

The geographical location is determined as the physical midpoint between the two birthplaces. This unique approach anchors the relationship in both time and space, providing insights into its purpose, dynamics, and potential growth.

Davison vs. Composite Charts

Davison Charts

Used exclusively to analyze relationships between two individuals.

Composite Charts

Midpoint composite charts can be applied to larger groups or teams, making them more versatile for non-dyadic relationships.

Applications of Davison Charts

While Davison charts are most commonly used for romantic relationships (e.g., male/female dynamics), they are also valuable for interpreting other types of relationships, such as:

  • Parent/Child relationships.
  • Boss/Worker dynamics.
  • Friendships or partnerships with significant interpersonal bonds.

The Davison method provides a grounded, tangible perspective on relationships, offering astrologers a deeper understanding of the connections between two people.

Davison Time Theory

To determine the Davison relationship time, the exact midpoint between the two individuals’ birth times is calculated.

Mid Time Example

If one person is born at 12:00 noon and the other at 6:05 PM on the same day, the Davison relationship time will be 3:02:30 PM. While it’s possible to calculate this manually, the process is complex and requires precision. Fortunately, astrology software like Astro Gold and Solar Fire can easily compute Davison charts, saving significant time and effort.

Davison-mid-time-clocks

Davison Date Theory

The Davison chart is also based on the midpoint between the two birth dates, creating a “relationship birth date.”

Mid-Date Example

If one person is born on January 1st and the other on December 31st, the Davison date will fall around July 2nd or 3rd. For individuals born on January 1st, 1960, and January 1st, 1970, the Davison chart’s birth date will be January 1st, 1965—exactly halfway between the two dates.

Davison Key Takeaways

Specifics

Specifics of Davison charts.

  • The midpoint in time and date anchors the Davison chart, reflecting the unique moment that symbolizes the relationship.
  • This chart provides a practical and insightful tool for analyzing relationship dynamics.
  • Modern astrology software make these calculations straightforward, allowing astrologers to focus on interpretation rather than math.

The combination of Davison time and date theories creates a powerful lens for understanding the deeper essence of a relationship.

Angelina Jolie

Birth data: 9:09am, June 4th, 1975, Los Angeles, CA USA.

Brad Pitt

Birth data: 6:31am, December 18, 1963, Shawnee, OK, USA.

Davison Jolie and Pitt

Midpoint Date

Find the midpoint date between Angelina Jolie’s birth date of June 4, 1975, and Brad Pitt’s birthdate December 18, 1963. The result is approximately September 10th, 1969.

Midpoint Place

Next you have to find the approximate place between the two places of birth Shawnee, Oklahoma and Los Angeles, California. I chose the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is what I call the eyeball method.

Guess Davison Place

Midpoint City

It is interesting to guess the place closest to the two birth place’s midpoint and then to cast a chart for that place. This will certainly stretch you as an astrologer as you grapple with the time, date and place concepts for Davison Relationship charts.

Astrological Research

Innovation in a Timeless Practice

One of the most exciting aspects of Davison Relationship Charts is that this technique is relatively new in the world of astrology. This is in contrast to a field where many principles have remained largely unchanged for over two thousand years. While traditional techniques continue to provide profound insights, Davison’s work reminds us that astrology is a living, evolving practice.

Modern Invention

The fact that Ronald C. Davison devised this method in the 20th century is a powerful inspiration for modern astrologers. It highlights the potential to innovate, rethink existing paradigms and develop fresh approaches to interpreting charts. It’s a testament to the idea that astrology, like any discipline, thrives when its practitioners stay curious and open to exploration.

Dynamic

Astrology isn’t static, but rather it grows as we apply it to new questions, integrate modern tools and explore creative ways to interpret charts. Davison’s pioneering work serves as a call to action for all astrologers, just like you, to engage in research, experiment with new techniques, and contribute to the ever-expanding understanding of the cosmos. Even if you’re a longtime professional or you’re just beginning your astrology journey, remember that your insights and discoveries have the potential to shape the future of astrology.

What Will You Do?

I hope this inspires you to look at your charts with fresh eyes and uncover your own unique interpretations. What new techniques might you create? Let’s keep exploring!

Extend Yourself

Using the Davison relationship chart between yourself and your partner:

  • List the house positions of the planets.
  • Determine which planets are in the same houses as they are in the composite.
  • List the aspects.
  • Note all unaspected planets.
  • Find which aspects are repeated from the composite chart and appear in the Davison chart.
  • Consider if any major aspect patterns (stellium, grand cross, grand trine, kite, mystic rectangle, yod, Thor’s hammer, cross of David or mini grand trine) are found in both charts.
  • Interpret the Davison relationship chart (250 words).
  • Write a comparison report between the composite midpoint chart and the Davison relationship chart (200 words).
  • Consider which chart you feel has more correctly outlined the relationship with your partner, the composite midpoint chart, or the Davison relationship chart (50 words).

Extend Yourself Further

  • Cast both natal charts and briefly interpret each one (100 words each).
  • Simply by looking and not using a computer, find what you believe to be the Davison birth date will be (hint the midpoint date between the two births).
  • Looking at a map of the world find the two birth places, estimate the position you think the Davison chart will be cast for. Try to find the geo coordinates of latitude and longitude for this place.
  • Cast the Davison relationship chart with astrology software or an app like Astro Gold and compare it to your estimate.
  • Interpret the Davison chart (250 words).

Compatibility Note

Read your Ascendant sign if you know it, or your Sun sign or Moon sign.

These are quick sign connections from your sign’s alignment with the other signs.

Of course, other factors will play into this compatibility list.

For example, if you have many planets in a different sign to your Sun, then that sign will probably dominate and you should read that sign for compatibility.
