The 9th House

Influence

Unbelievably, this is going to be the final house in our houses series and it’s the 9th house. This is a succedent house and what this means if you have planets there, they are waiting to be used. In general, this is not a house that steps forward for you, you have to consciously work the energies in it.

The 9th house is one that you tend to get around to eventually after you’ve dealt with the four angular houses of the 1st (self), the 7th (partner), the 4th (home) and the 10th (career). It’s a bit like moving up on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid. When you got all that angular house stuff sorted out, you move on to other houses and then you may get around to the 9th house.

Affinities of the Ninth House

Expansion

The ninth house in astrology is all about expansion in many areas like expansion of the mind, the spirit, and your place in the world. It governs higher education, including all adult or tertiary learning that happens at colleges, universities, or through other advanced studies. Any time you earn a diploma, degree, or deepen your understanding of the world through formal education, you’re engaging with ninth house energy.

Legal Matters

This house is also connected to legal matters, particularly those involving judges or higher courts. When you stand before a judge or seek justice in a formal setting, that’s a ninth house experience. It’s not about everyday law enforcement, but the broader systems of law and moral judgment.

Faith

Spiritually, the ninth house rules religion, faith, and how you relate to a higher power. It reflects your beliefs about God or the universe, whether you stay within one tradition or explore different spiritual paths over time. If you’ve changed religions or blended different beliefs, the ninth house will often show that.

Publishing

In the realm of communication, the ninth house rules publishing, whether through traditional means, self-publishing, or working with literary agents. It’s also associated with broadcasting, promotion, and getting your message out to a wide audience.

Travel

Travel falls under the ninth house too, especially long-distance or international travel. Historically, this meant any journey beyond what a horse could ride in a day. Today, it includes all forms of extended travel—by train (earth), airplane (air), ship (water), and even adventurous ways like hot-air balloons (fire). This house opens you to global cultures, foreign languages, and everything cosmopolitan. It’s about widening your worldview.

Life Journey

At its heart, the ninth house speaks to your life’s journey including physically, mentally and spiritually. It reflects your vision for the future, your philosophical outlook, and what gives your life meaning. It points to the direction you’re heading in, not just on a map, but in your soul.

1st House

In astrology, the first house is one of the most important houses in your chart, if not the most important house. It’s one that we all use because we all project our personalities. The 1st house is different to the 10th house because it expresses who you are when you meet people face to face, which is different to the 10th house which tends to show what you are known for by people who perhaps haven’t even met you yet. If you want to start learning about houses, you will want to probably learn the first house initially to find out more about who you are and who you project. It does express a lot of that energy, particularly if you’ve got planets tenanting as well.

The Big Three

The general, I like to view the 1st house and the Ascendant as your personality, the Sun as your character, and the Moonas your behavior. You can find out more about my thoughts on the astrological big three concept.

1st House Core Themes

First Principles

The 1st house in astrology is one of the, if not the, most important parts of a birth chart. It’s like the front door to your personality. It expresses just how you show up in the world.

Physical Body

The first house in astrology is deeply connected to your physical body and outer identity. It represents your appearance and things like your facial features, skin tone, height, posture, and the way you move through the world. You can think of it as your personal “vehicle” and the physical and energetic container that carries you through life.

Your Birth

This house also reflects the moment of your birth, offering insight into the conditions surrounding your entry into the world. This includes how you came into being and what was happening around you at that time.

First Impressions

“There’s never a second chance to make a first impression” is your 1st house. It’s strongly linked to the first impression you make on others. This shows up in how people perceive you straight away. It’s your vibe and what people notice about you when they first meet you. It’s often linked to your appearance, looks, style, gait and body language.

Aura

Additionally, it includes your aura or energetic presence, especially for those sensitive to energy. Often, the color and quality of your aura can be associated with the zodiac sign on your Ascendant (the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth). Your aura can be modified by any planets closely aligned with this point.

Personality

The first house also gives us clues about your personality style and how you express yourself naturally, your instinctive approach to life. It shows what kind of personal space you tend to need to feel comfortable. Some people radiate openness, while others naturally create a sense of boundary or privacy and the first house can help explain why.

Vitality

On a more physical level, this house relates to your vitality and life force. The 1st house rules your physical body and general health. It doesn’t go into deep medical details, but it hints at your energy levels and how you carry yourself physically. It can show your resilience and how quickly you bounce back from physical or emotional challenges. When strong and well-supported, the first house often reflects good energy, enthusiasm for life and the ability to recover quickly.

Planets in the 1st House

Planetary Energies

Any planet in the 1st house will modify your appearance and personality in the nature of said planet. The more planets you have in the 1st house the more complex the energies and so the outcomes will be. Typically, one planet will be better placed than the others, but not always. Any planet which is the chart ruler, is the most elevated planet or has the highest essential dignity will be more impactful in the 1st house. Planets near the cusp are more likely to be influential than planets at the end of the house and near the 2nd house cusp.

Retrograde

Any 1st house planets which are retrograde will probably at first be reduced, but as those planet turn retrograde by transit each year you will resist the challenges of the retrograde period somewhat.

Sun in the 1st House

Confident and Proactive

When the Sun shines in your 1st house, your sense of self is strong and radiant. You naturally take initiative and prefer to lead rather than follow. Your physical presence is hard to miss and you carry yourself with confidence and warmth. There’s a natural desire to express who you are and be recognized for it.

Moon in the 1st House

Emotionally Expressive and Sensitive

With the Moon here, your emotions are close to the surface and often show on your face. You instinctively seek connection and may feel fulfilled when others need you. Nurturing comes easily, and people may find you comforting and approachable. Your mood can be quite changeable, but your emotional presence is deeply felt.

Mercury in the 1st House

Quick-Witted and Self-Aware

Mercury here makes you mentally alert and expressive. You think quickly and often about your own role in the world. You’re likely very curious and enjoy talking, learning and sharing ideas and especially about things that relate to you personally. Your words carry weight and people may easily notice how articulate and clever you are.

Venus in the 1st House

Charming and Graceful

With Venus in your 1st house, there is an undeniable charm and a natural beauty and style about you. Whether it’s your appearance, your manners, or your sense of style, people are drawn to your warmth and elegance. You tend to value harmony and may go out of your way to be pleasant and diplomatic.

Mars in the 1st House

Driven and Assertive

Mars gives you a fiery edge when it is in the 1st house. You have a strong will and are naturally competitive. With Mars energy prominent in the 1st house, you like to be first in line, first in the race and first in life. Action is your language, and you often dive headfirst into new challenges. There is courage, vitality and sometimes a reddish tinge to your aura, though you may need to watch out for impatience or impulsiveness.

Jupiter in the 1st House

Expansive and Optimistic

Jupiter here shows you have a big personality. You will typically have a generous spirit, an optimistic outlook and an infectious enthusiasm. When Jupiter is in the 1st house you may easily come across as larger than life, both in energy and sometimes in body and there can be a tendency to overindulge. Your positive outlook and genuine warmth are uplifting to those around you.

Saturn in the 1st House

Mature and Reserved

Saturn in the 1st house can bring a serious or stoic vibe to your personality. Additionally, you may appear older than you are, either in looks or in demeanor. There is a quiet strength in your presence. People often trust you to be responsible and grounded. Life may ask you to grow up quickly, but you will often become wiser through the experience.

Uranus in the 1st House

Independent and Original

With quirky Uranus in the 1st house, you will walk your own path and you rarely fit into a box. Uranus here makes you stand out and sometimes in subtle ways, sometimes boldly. You may feel different or unique. You tend to express that uniqueness unapologetically and somewhat in people’s faces. Others see you as innovative and surprising, or refreshingly authentic.

Neptune in the 1st House

Dreamy and Mysterious

Neptune gives you an ethereal quality, making you seem elusive or hard to define. Others may project fantasies or ideals onto you, and you might need strong boundaries to stay grounded. There is a deep sensitivity and a spiritual undertone to your presence. You are often empathetic, imaginative and artistic.

Pluto in the 1st House

Intense and Transformative

Pluto brings a powerful presence. People can sense that there’s more to you than meets the eye. You may have gone through significant personal transformations, and your journey often includes themes of empowerment and rebirth. Others may find you magnetic, mysterious, or even intimidating, but always unforgettable.

Chiron in the 1st House

Vulnerable and Healing

Chiron here highlights a deep awareness of your own physical or personal vulnerabilities. You may have felt different or “wounded” in some way when it comes to how you appear or assert yourself. Yet this placement also gives you the potential to become a healer and someone who understands pain and helps others grow through theirs.

Mars Transiting the First House

You feel energized and ready to take action when Mars transit your 1st house. This transit brings drive, motivation, and assertiveness. It is a great time to start something new or take bold steps forward. However, you may also feel more impatient or impulsive, so try to balance your energy.

Uranus Transiting the First House

Unexpected changes may arise as Uranus transits your 1st house, and you may feel a strong urge to break free from old patterns. This is a time of personal awakening and experimentation. You will probably discover new ways of being and expressing your individuality. Flexibility and openness can help you embrace the changes.

Neptune Transiting the First House

You may feel more sensitive, intuitive, or spiritually inclined when Neptune enters your 1st house. Neptune will probably be in this house for about thirteen years. There can be a dreamlike quality to how others see you, and you might struggle with boundaries or clarity. It is a beautiful time to explore your imagination and inner world, but important to stay grounded in your truth.

Pluto Transiting the First House

This is a profound and transformative period when Pluto enters your 1st house. Your identity and how you present yourself to the world are undergoing deep change. Power dynamics may come into focus and you may feel more intense or private. Over time, this transit can help you reclaim your personal power and emerge stronger.

Chiron Transiting the First House

Old wounds related to your identity or physical presence may resurface, asking for healing and understanding. This transit of Chiron helps you become more compassionate with yourself and others. You are learning to honor your vulnerabilities and recognize them as part of your unique strength.

The Upside of a First House Transit

When a planet moves through your first house, it touches the very core of your personality. This part of your chart represents your sense of self, your physical presence and how you approach the world. A first house transit often indicate you will have a fresh start in the nature of the planet. You can look forward to 1st house transits as times when something intrinsically within you is being awakened, refined, or expressed more fully.

Self-rediscovery

The upside of any first house transit is the opportunity for self-rediscovery and personal empowerment. These periods invite you to reconnect with who you truly are, sometimes in bold, exciting ways, and other times through gentle, subtle shifts in how you carry yourself.

You may feel called to:

  • Step into greater authenticity: Just express your true nature without apology.
  • Refresh your self-image: Revamp how you look and feel about your true self.
  • Build confidence: Take more initiative in your life.
  • Reclaim your autonomy: Become more independent and self-directed.
  • Energize your goals: Especially ones that align with your personal desires.
  • Become more visible: Be recognized and acknowledged for exactly who you are.

1st house transits are a chance to grow more aware, alive and aligned with your inner truth. These transits can be seen as windows of time for you to set intentions, initiate change and honor the person whom you are becoming.

4th House

Understanding the 4th House and Astrology

I believe that knowing a little astrology is a benefit to everyone. Not everyone needs to go on to be a professional astrology, but if you have some insights into people through astrology it helps you with your relationships in life. And really, the way to get through life is to build relationships with people which this is done by often by finding common ground or participating in activities that interest you both.

Back in the Day

It used to be advised that if you wanted to find your husband or wife, you needed to have someone with common interests to you, who came from a similar background, because then things didn’t need explaining. We are now living where you’ve got your nuclear family unit of people fragmented across the globe, living in places where they didn’t grow up and they often have to immerse themselves in cultures that are often perplexing. The ability to understand people is a huge benefit. You can understand people a lot better if you know a little bit about astrology, even if you just start with their Sun sign, then move onto their Moon sign and perhaps their Ascendant sign. Even with these three components, (Ascendant, Sun and Moon) you can get an understanding of people that may overcome the difficulties of fragmented families and people living far away from their homeland.

Immigrants

As an immigrant myself, I know this is not easy. I left my hometown at the age of 12 and I’ve not lived in that country since. So everywhere I go, I am perceived as the immigrant, the person who is not from here, the person who is new. Even today I get asked in shops, “Oh, are you on vacation? Are you visiting here?” and I can calmly say, “Well no, actually I’ve lived here for 25 years” but the perception is still there. For those of you who are immigrants, or living in the place where you didn’t grow up, you will understand what I’m talking about with the cultural differences that occur even in English speaking countries.

Adaptation

Many of you will have to adapt to fit into the current culture of where you’re living now. All of these things have to do with the 4th house in astrology. It does represent where you came from, your roots, your ancestry, your family, and your cultural heritage, and your relationship with these symbols and traditions.

Homebody

Alternatively, if you are someone who has stayed in the place where you grew up and haven’t moved from your city, culture or family background, and you still have a vast family surrounding you, you will have a different experience altogether of your 4th house.

Foundations

In astrology, it’s important to understand, when reading charts for your family, friends or clients, that the foundations that they are standing on, i.e. their 4th house, may have shifted dramatically from the time they were born. An exploration of this important house is always a good starting point when reading someone’s chart. Arwynne and I have recorded a podcast about the 4th house for you which you can listen to hereAlternatively, the podcast now is uploaded onto the Starzology YouTube channel as well, as an “audio only” video.

Let’s get started.

4th House Podcast

Listen to our podcast episode on the 4th house here.

4th House Core Themes

The 4th House represents the most intimate foundations of your life. It’s the deepest part of your chart—the midnight point—symbolizing your private world, what grounds you and your innermost sense of belonging.

Home and Physical Dwelling

Your relationship to physical spaces manifests here—houses, apartments and all places you call home. This includes real estate investments, property ownership and even temporary dwellings like camper vans, mobile homes and caravans. The 4th House reveals what “home” means to you personally and what environments help you feel secure.

Family and Domestic Life

This house governs your family dynamics, both chosen and biological. It reveals your relationship with family members who share your living space, including non-blood relatives who function as family. Your domestic habits, private routines and the emotional atmosphere you create within your home all fall under the 4th House’s domain.

Parental Influence

Traditionally associated with the “passive parent” (historically the father in patriarchal systems, though modern interpretations vary), this house reflects parental influences that shaped your sense of security and belonging. It can reveal patterns inherited from childhood and how they affect your adult concept of home.

Ancestry and Roots

Your heritage, cultural background and ancestral lineage are illuminated here. The 4th House connects you to your roots—showing how your family history, cultural traditions and generational patterns influence your identity and sense of belonging in the world.

Homeland and Patriotism

Your relationship to your country of origin, feelings of patriotism and sense of national identity are 4th House matters. This includes your connection to your homeland’s symbols (like flags), traditions and cultural expressions.

Foundations and Origins

This house represents the foundation upon which you build your life. It reveals your origins—both literally and metaphorically—and shows what grounds you. Your early conditioning, childhood experiences and the emotional baseline you operate from throughout life are reflected here.

Life’s End and Legacy

As the lowest point in the chart, the 4th House paradoxically represents both beginnings and endings. It governs your final years, how you conclude your life journey and what you leave behind. Your relationship to ancestry and legacy connects to how you’ll be remembered after you’re gone.

Planets in the 4th House

When planets occupy your 4th House, they color your experience of home, family and foundations in specific ways:

The Sun

You define yourself through your family connections and home life. Your identity is intertwined with your roots and you take pride in your heritage. Family relationships are central to your sense of purpose and you likely put family needs first. Leadership within the family unit comes naturally to you.

The Moon

Your emotional security is deeply tied to your home environment. You have strong emotional connections to family members and may be naturally nurturing. Your home truly is your sanctuary and comfort zone and you’re highly sensitive to the emotional atmosphere there. You may have strong memories of childhood and a deep connection to family traditions.

Mercury

Your mind is often occupied with domestic matters and family communications. You may document family history, keep extensive records, or serve as the family storyteller. Intellectual activities often occur at home and you may work from home or have a home office/library. Family discussions and intellectual exchanges within the home are important to you.

Venus

You express love through creating a beautiful, harmonious home environment. Your living space is likely tastefully decorated and aesthetically pleasing. You value family harmony and may be the peacemaker in family disputes.  You find pleasure in domestic activities and may enjoy entertaining at home Family relationships are a source of joy and fulfillment.

Mars

You direct your energy and drive toward home projects and family protection. You may be territorial about your home and fiercely protective of family members. Domestic conflicts can arise easily as you assert your will at home. You likely tackle home improvement projects with enthusiasm and may feel patriotic toward your homeland, possibly even serving in the military or other protective services.

Jupiter

You seek expansion and growth through your living situation and family connections. You may prefer a large house or constantly expand your living space. Your home often feels welcoming and abundant to others and you’re generous with family members. You may have an international family or incorporate diverse cultural traditions into your home life. Your optimism about family matters is contagious.

Saturn

You approach home and family with discipline and a sense of duty. Your home may be austere or minimalist, emphasizing function over comfort. Family responsibilities weigh heavily on you and you may have experienced restrictions or limitations in childhood. You build secure foundations methodically and value tradition and structure within the family unit. With maturity, you develop a profound sense of inner security.

Uranus

Your home life and family connections are unconventional or frequently changing. You may move often, live in unusual homes, or create alternative family structures. Domestic routines feel restrictive to you and you crave freedom within your living situation. You might emigrate or live far from your birthplace, seeking to break from ancestral patterns and establish your own unique foundations.

Neptune

You have an idealistic or spiritual connection to the concept of home. You may live near water or incorporate spiritual practices into your home life. Family boundaries can be blurry and you may sacrifice for family members or idealize your family history. Your home often serves as a sanctuary for spiritual or creative pursuits and you’re sensitive to the subtle energies of living spaces.

Pluto

Your home is intensely private and family dynamics may involve power struggles or transformational experiences. You might experience profound changes through your living situation or family relationships. Family secrets or inherited psychological patterns significantly impact you. You seek to transform your relationship with your roots and may completely rebuild your foundations during your lifetime. Home represents a place of deep psychological security and regeneration.

10th House

10th House Main Themes

How the World Knows You

The 10th house is one of the most significant houses in astrology, associated with career, public reputation, social status and life’s calling. It shows how the world knows you as opposed to the Ascendant which shows how you are known by people whom you meet face-to-face. After the 1st house, I consider the 10th house as next most influential house in someone’s birth chart.

Career and Professional Life

This house reveals your career path, professional ambitions and your relationship with authority figures. It indicates your approach to achieving professional goals.

Note on the 6th house: Back in the day, professionals (doctors, lawyers and civil engineers), were paid a salary monthly as opposed to artisanal workers (butchers, bakers and candlestick makers) who were paid a wage weekly which is a main differentiator between the 6th and the 10th house when it comes to making a living.

Your Public Image

The 10th house shows how others perceive you in the public domain, particularly in your professional life. This includes your reputation, fame, notoriety and your public persona and business brand.

Authority and Leadership

It suggests your relationship with authority figures and how you wield influence yourself. Things like your management style and your natural ability to take charge are indicated here.

Achievement and Recognition

The rewards and acknowledgment you receive for your efforts and contributions to the world, including honors, awards and social status are shown by your tenth house. This is where you accept the Nobel Peace prize.

Life’s Purpose

In some houses systems, like Placidus which I use, the Midheaven is the cusp of the 10th house. This sensitive point represents your lofty aspirations and your legacy which you wish to leave behind.

Astrological Influences

Sign, Ruler, Tenants and Saturn

The sign on the cusp of your 10th house influences how you approach your career and public life. The 10th house ruler, and its condition, suggest your approach to 10th house natters. Planets tenanting the 10th house can strongly impact your professional path and public standing. Saturn as the ruler of the natural 10th house has an affinity here, as it rules structure, responsibility and authority

Angular

The 10th house is one of the four angular housesThis makes it a particularly powerful and influential house in a birth chart. Its position at the very top of the chart (the highest point) symbolizes its connection to visible achievements and public recognition.

Cusp

Always look for aspects to the Midheaven, or the 10th house cusp degree, as they will influence the 10th house as a whole.

10th-house

Planets in the 10th House

Dynamic Impact

The impact of any planet in the 10th house is particularly strong because:

  • The 10th house is an angular house, making planetary energies more prominent
  • Planets here are at the highest point in the chart, making their influence more visible and may be the most elevated planet.
  • Planet here can be in the Midheaven Gauquelin sector.
  • Career and public life become important channels for expressing the planet’s energy

Let’s take a look at how each planet expresses itself when placed in the 10th house of career, public image and achievement.

Sun in 10th House

The Sun here creates a natural leader who often achieves significant public recognition and fame. You are drawn to positions of authority and tend to shine brightest in your career. You may strongly identify with your professional role and often have leadership positions thrust upon you. There’s a strong drive for you to make your mark on the world and be recognized for your unique contributions.

Moon in 10th House

This placement often indicates a career which involves caring for or nurturing others. Your public image may wax and wane with moods and emotional sensitivity playing a significant role in your professional life. With the Moon in the 10th house you might work in fields related to food, family, women’s issues or emotional support. Your reputation often centers around your emotional intelligence and ability to express understanding.

Mercury in 10th House

Communication becomes central to career success if you have this placement. You excel in professions requiring writing, speaking, teaching or analytical thinking. You perhaps will become known for your intellectual abilities or communication skills. Careers in journalism, education or technology appeal to you when Mercury is placed here. It is likely that your public image will center around your intelligence and ability to convey information.

Venus in 10th House

This placement suggests you may flourish in a career involving beauty, art, harmony or relationships. You will probably excel in creative fields, diplomacy or positions that require charm and social grace. With Venus in the 10th house your public image tends to be pleasant and attractive. You may become known for your taste, style or ability to create beautiful things. Success for you often comes by maintaining good relationships.

Mars in 10th House

Mars here creates ambitious people who pursue their goals with tremendous energy and drive. You are a natural entrepreneur and leader who isn’t afraid to take the initiative in your career. This placement may indicate success in competitive fields, sports, or positions which require courage and decisive action. Your public image often centers around your boldness and ability to get things done.

Jupiter in 10th House

This is considered a fortunate placement for career and social status. You often experience significant professional expansion and opportunities for growth. You may work in fields related to education, law, religion or international affairs. Your public image tends to be positive and expansive. With Jupiter in the 10th house, you often achieve recognition in your chosen field.

Saturn in 10th House

Saturn here indicates a serious approach to your career and reputation. Success comes through hard work, patience and by building solid foundations over time. You often face early career challenges but can achieve lasting recognition with persistence. You are likely to become an authority figure in your field and you are usually highly responsible and reliable in your professional role.

Uranus in 10th House

This placement suggests you have an unconventional career path or an innovative approach to your professional life. You often break with tradition and may change careers suddenly or work in cutting-edge industries. Your public image might be seen as eccentric or revolutionary and you often bring new ideas or methods to your profession when Uranus is here.

Neptune in 10th House

Neptune here can indicate a career involving creativity, spirituality, healing or the arts. There might be some confusion or uncertainty about your career direction, but also the potential for inspiration and intuitive understanding in professional matters. Your public image might be somewhat elusive or idealized. You often work in areas that require imagination or compassion.

Pluto in 10th House

This placement suggests you will experience profound transformations through career and public life. You often have significant power or influence in your profession and may work in fields involving research, psychology or transformation. When Pluto is in the 10th house your public image can be intense or mysterious. You frequently experience major changes in your professional life that lead to personal evolution.

Chiron in 10th House

Chiron’s placement here often indicates restoration through your career and professional life. You might work in a healing profession or help others overcome professional wounds such as being laid off. Your own business challenges often become sources of wisdom which you can share with others.

Eris in 10th House

Eris in the 10th house suggests a professional path marked by disruption and one which challenges the status quo. You find yourself drawn to careers where you can expose injustice or inequality. There may be a tendency to create discord in your professional setting, but this usually stems from a deep-seated drive to reveal uncomfortable truths. Your public reputation might be controversial, as you are not afraid to stand up against established power structures. Success comes through embracing your role as a professional provocateur or whistleblower.

Vacant 10th House

An empty 10th house in a birth chart doesn’t mean your career and public life are insignificant or non-existent, but rather that this area of life may be less complex or dramatic. The sign on the 10th house cusp (and its ruling planet) become especially important in interpreting your career matters.

An unoccupied 10th house suggests that you are more flexible in your professional path being unburdened by any planetary urges in this area of life. You may naturally integrate various life experiences into your career journey without feeling overly defined by your profession. Consider at the Midheaven’s ruling planet’s house (the planet that rules the sign on the Midheaven) and aspects for additional insights into how career themes will manifest in charts with a vacant 10th house.
