An Introduction to Interpreting the Four Humours

This Guest Post is by UK astrologer James Hirlehey.

The four humours are the cornerstone of reading a chart for the health and well-being of the native, as well as determining their character and temperament from a more traditional perspective. This article will introduce the four humours and will give you some suggestions for your own study and research.

What are the four humours?

Most people have heard of the four humours in the context of Ancient Greek philosophy. They are generally taught as being related to bodily fluids in the following way:

  • Sanguine – blood
  • Choleric – yellow bile
  • Melancholic – black bile
  • Phlegmatic – phlegm

Later, an astrological student might learn that sanguine relates to the element air, choleric relates to fire, melancholic relates to earth, and phlegmatic relates to water. Then, if you study further, you might learn about temperament in the context of general personality traits of each of these humours.

Temperament and humours are far more intricate than this, however, and they form the foundation for Western Astrology.

The two polarities

The four humours are based on two polarities, hot/cold and wet/dry. The hot/cold polarity is rather straightforward. It relates to literal heat and coolness, but it also relates to activity level. Hot is active and busy, and cold is passive and calm. The wet/dry polarity is a little more complicated. It has to do with unity and separation. Wet connects and brings things together, and dry separates them and creates distinctions.

The correspondence between the humours, elements, and polarities is as follows:

  • Sanguine – Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) – hot and wet
  • Choleric – Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) – hot and dry
  • Melancholic – Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) – cold and dry
  • Phlegmatic – Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) – cold and wet

How the four humours were used historically

Before the 17th Century, the humours provided the structure by which astrology and medicine were practiced. When interpreting a Natal Chart, the astrologer would determine the temperament of the native, or that person’s natural balance between the polarities. Any medical or dietary advice would take into account the individual’s natural temperament as well as the apparent imbalance that could be determined by symptoms and by the chart that was cast to diagnose the patient.

The animals and plants that are used as food or medicine also have temperament. The way foods or plants are prepared can alter their temperament. For example, cooking heats food, baking dries it, and boiling moistens it. Different activities also alter temperament as well. For example, most exercise is heating, and rest is cooling.

Other applications of temperament

The principle of temperament also has application to the seasons, planets, and phases of the Moon. The temperament of the seasons is:

  • Spring (Aries, Taurus, Gemini) – hot and wet
  • Summer (Cancer, Leo, Virgo) – hot and dry
  • Autumn (Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) – cold and dry
  • Winter (Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces) – cold and wet

The sign correspondences with the seasons are based on the Northern Hemisphere. It could be that these sign correspondences are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a topic that is wide open for astrological research.

The planetary temperament correspondences are not uniform in traditional sources. In William Lilly’s Christian Astrology, they are listed as follows:

  • Saturn – melancholic, cold and dry
  • Jupiter – sanguine, hot and wet
  • Mars – choleric, hot and dry
  • The Sun – hot and dry
  • Venus – phlegm with blood, temperately cold and wet
  • Mercury – variable according to the other planets nearby, but alone, melancholic, cold and dry
  • The Moon – phlegmatic, cold and wet

The temperament of the phases of the Moon are as follows:

  • New Moon to 1st Quarter Moon – hot and wet
  • 1st Quarter Moon to Full Moon – hot and dry
  • Full Moon to 3rd Quarter Moon – cold and dry
  • 3rd Quarter Moon to New Moon – cold and wet

Incorporating the Four Humours in Chart Interpretation

The easiest way to begin incorporating the four humours is to use the two polarities to take the temperature of the chart, as it were. There are various methods for calculating temperament, but a very simple approach is to just count the planets by element.

We can try this with the chart of the famous celebrity and talk show host, Oprah Winfrey:

Every astrologer needs to decide for themselves what planets and chart points to use, but for this example, let’s use the Traditional Planets, the Ascendant and the Midheaven.

  • Sun – Aquarius (Air), hot and wet
  • Moon – Sagittarius (Fire), hot and dry
  • Mercury – Aquarius (Air), hot and wet
  • Venus – Aquarius (Air), hot and wet
  • Mars – Scorpio (Water), cold and wet
  • Jupiter – Gemini (Air), hot and wet
  • Saturn – Scorpio (Water), cold and wet
  • Ascendant – Virgo (Earth), cold and dry
  • Midheaven – Gemini (Air), hot and wet

By a simple count, we have 6 hot/3 cold, 7 wet/2 dry. By this count, Oprah Winfrey is hot, meaning she likes to be busy and active. Hot people also tend to be more extroverted than cold people. She is also very wet. This means that she tends to see how things and people are alike, and that she likes to bring people together.

As you are experimenting with temperament, you can try adding other things into the mix and see what happens. For example, you may want to add in the season of the Sun, the phase or the Moon, and the Part of Fortune. If you do that, you get:

  • Season – Winter, cold and wet
  • Phase of Moon – 3rd Quarter, cold and wet
  • Part of Fortune – Scorpio, water, cold and wet

Adding these three into the mix would make her even in the hot/cold polarity 6/6 and even more wet with a score of 11/2.

If you want to study and experiment further, there are many other formulas that have been used for calculating temperament in the astrological tradition. As an aspiring astrologer, it is good practice to play with different planets and chart points, and perhaps try different formulas to see what seems to yield the most accurate results for you.

When experimenting with new techniques, the best practice is to start with your own chart, as you know the most about yourself. Then branch out to look at the charts of people you know well, like your friends and family. This way you can see for yourself if the four humours are useful to you in interpreting a chart,

Conclusion

In this article, we have looked at the four humours and the principles behind them. We have also looked at how they were used historically and have given suggestions for how to begin to incorporate them into your own chart analyses. Hopefully, this will give you the tools you need to start experimenting with the four humours on your own.

Pisces

Pisces is the sign of the Fish. Its symbol is two fish tethered together but swimming in the opposite direction. The Sun is in Pisces from February 21st to March 21st.

Your key phrase is “I believe…” and many strong Pisces types use this to begin conversations.

You have two ruling planets; Jupiter your traditional ruler and Neptune your modern ruler.

If you are born under the sign of the Fish it means you fall under the fluid and flowing element of water, the quality of mutability which suggests you are flexible and the passive polarity indicating you will take in and absorb things more than most. This can mean you empathize with others.

If you are Pisces you will make sacrifices and are understanding. You will blend well with others and can be arty. You may drift a bit in life but you have compassion. You are idealistic and can become disillusioned at times. You may be glamorous. You can be vague, kind and will be happy to surrender. You may retreat near the sea and you are spiritual and devoted.

Virgo is of the element of earth suggesting being in touch, the mutable mode indicating you are flexible and can multi-task and the negative polarity which means you may be shy or reticent.

Virgos are particular and this is another word for picky. You like to analyze situations. You may seem to be finding fault but it is just your attention to detail that makes you aware (more than most) of any imperfections in people or situations. You can be self-critical and this may be a problem when you are young. Virgos are discriminating and want perfection in life. You are kind, meticulous, fastidious, even, and can be detailed oriented. Virgo is the sign of those who serve and you are good in this role. You are modest and humble and make excellent workers.

There are more Virgo births than any other sign. Those born under the sign of the virgin are the workers of the zodiac and are often placed in supporting roles. You do not like being put on the spot and will resist leadership when it is offered to you. It’s like a beehive with one queen bee – the Leo and many worker bees – the Virgos.

The Astrology of December 2017

by Alison Price

Introduction

As we look at the astrology of December 2017 we see that it has its own cosmic ebb and flow as different energies come into play.

This happens as the planets slowly shift against the backdrop of the signs. It is much like a kaleidoscope of various colours and shapes that create new patterns as you turn the tube.

The inner planets Mercury and Venus will generally be in Capricorn in December because they travel near the Sun.

During the time over the year-end the other planets can bring their flavour to the proceedings because they will not be in Capricorn. Oh, but that’s not true this year as we’ll soon see.

Saturn into Capricorn

The big news this month is that Saturn is moving into Capricorn.

Signs that will feel this energy shift the most are Capricorn, Aquarius and anyone who is turning twenty-nine, fifty-nine or eighty-nine years old in 2018. For these people will have Saturn in Capricorn in their birth chart and this means a Saturn return is up for them.

Saturn in Capricorn is a recalibration of worthy and achievable goals that you can set. You will be limited, but only by your own hand, as you strive to build a foundation for your future.

Governments, corporations and businesses will be more transparent as the people demand honest dealings. Laws brought in to force now will restrict and contain anything that has been running rampant.

Company taxes is one area that will be addressed.

On a personal level you will learn the hard way just what your limitations are. Parents of teenagers will clamp down and try to resist the pressure from their children. Parenting itself will become a respected vocation.

Later parenting and big brother types of groups will gain strength. Discipline for youth will be brought in again.

The internet will be restructured and a fairer equity will come in.

All of these changes will evolve over the next two and a half years as Saturn transits the whole of Capricorn.

Mars Moves into Scorpio

Mars goes home to watery Scorpio to bring a deeper and more profound experience in intimacy for some signs.

Expect a magnetic attraction to what really matters whether it is family, friends or a personal project you are trying to get off the ground.

Get help from others and let them do any heavy lifting for you.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury will be retrograde for most of the month which creates a strain on Christmas shopping. The holiday crowds will be three times as likely to be annoying than usual.

Either get your seasonal shopping done in November and if you can’t do that then wait until Christmas Eve.

If you do buy stuff you will probably return the things you bought and go back to the store even before the season really starts because you are dissatisfied with your purchases.

You will be saying to yourself, “I can do better than this” as you look at the collection of gifts you bought with such hopes to give before the time.

The best shopping will be in the bag before December 3rd and unbelievably on Christmas Eve.

Avoid the crush as shoppers return three times because of the Mercury retrograde period to the shops to buy stuff that is inappropriate, wrong or damaged in some way.

This year promises to be hectic for shoppers and retailers alike. There will be words.

Expect postal delays as well because Mercury rules the post office, couriers and delivery services.

Gifts

Good gifts this year will be those that give time to the recipient like personal services, manicures and classes. Each sign has gifts they want.

Buy language lessons such as Spanish, Mandarin or French. Give the gift of classes to learn internet stuff and writing or calligraphy lessons.

All books will go down well as will reading apps that develop verbal skills. Audiobooks will do well as well because they give time to the recipient as they can do two things at once like commute and listen to an audiobook.

If you need a gift for your astrologer they will be most welcome.

Winter Solstice

After the solstice on the twenty-first (when the Sun moves into Capricorn) relax as the big drama is behind you.

Business functions, soirées and dinners around New Year will be important for your future and you need to be there.

Take a few days off to rest up and take it easy from December 22nd until New Year’s Eve. Spend time resting and rejuvenate yourself with music, massage, meditation and personal grooming treatments.

This is the time for a year end review.

Venus into Capricorn

Venus enters conservative Capricorn on Christmas Day to bring good cheer to all proceedings. Wear your best bib and tucker and step confidently into the festivities.

New Year

Changes will start from the first day of 2018 and you need to be on the starting grid from the get-go.

Be ready for the New Year this time as it will be a seriously competitive one. You do not want to be caught napping this time around. If you like get your New Year’s resolutions down so you can plan ahead.

Gear yourself up and face the New Year with confidence in December 2017.

Understanding Scorpio

by Alison Price

Understanding Scorpio

If you are born between October 21st and November 22nd you are known as a Scorpio.

What this really means is that the Sun was in the tropical zodiac sign of Scorpio when you were born.

The symbol is a scorpion which is a small arachnid which can hide in plain sight and often has a deadly sting.

Characteristics

Scorpios really want to get the bottom of things. They will keep probing until they get the truth. You may find it hard to keep your secrets from a Scorpio.

They are passionate and this brings in the part where they really are considered the sexiest sign because of their passions. So if a Scorpio is interested in you they will want to plunder the depths of intimacy and explore your deep motivations.

Scorpios will support you in secret and will champion you from the wings. They will provide their votes for people and causes they believe in.

Scorpio’s Affinities

The Scorpio ruling planet is Pluto the lord of the underworld.

The Scorpio colour is cyan from the sign placement in the colour wheel and maroon or dried blood red from its connection with Pluto

Scorpio is associated with two body systems:

  • The reproductive system
  • The eliminatory system

The reproductive systems in both sexes are under the rulership of Scorpio. This includes the eggs, ovaries, womb and vagina in women and the sperm, penis and testicles in men.

The eliminatory systems which encompass the bowel, bladder and sweat glands. Scorpio also rules the vomiting reflex to purge unwanted things from the body.

Sign Compatability

Scorpios are most compatible with Taurus the sign that is opposite as Taurus possess what they lack. In a love relationship this is appealing.

They can be lifelong friends with Cancer and Pisces the other water signs and other Scorpios.

Scorpios will compete with Leo and Aquarius but at the same time can build good things when they join with them.

Scorpios are not so comfortable with the signs Aries, Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius.

Mutual Reception

by Alison Price

Mutual Reception

Two planets may be in mutual reception when each planet is in the other planet’s sign.

Example: The Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Leo are in mutual reception because the Sun rules the sign of Leo and the Moon rules the sign of Cancer.

Technically planets in mutual reception need a Ptolemaic aspect joining them to be considered in mutual reception, but this strict rule can we waived now and then I believe.

A planet in its own sign cannot be in mutual reception with another planet.

Mutual reception by sign

When mutual reception by sign occurs, and each planet is in the other planet’s sign, it’s like the two planets have entered the party but it is crowded.

Only at the “aspect” have they found each other in the melee.

Then when it’s a Ptolemaic aspect they fall in love in the Moonlight.

Sigh…

Relationships Bonds

When two planets are in mutual reception it creates a bond between them that cannot immediately be seen as with an aspect.

Mutual reception is like a back-channel of energy that flows but you can only see it when you take a closer look.

Like when someone is chatting behind your back to another person and they have an allegiance to them and you don’t realise they are related, like cousins, and that is the connection.

  • Pluto in Pisces and Jupiter or Neptune in Scorpio

And that’s the lot. It is quite a comprehensive list and one chart may or may not have any mutual receptions.

You may decide to only use the traditional planets from the Sun to Saturn and this would be the case for creating a dispositor tree.

Mars in Gemini – The Juggler

by Alison Price

Mars

The red planet is known for its energy, effort being expended and activity.

This is the planet that gets you off the couch as something inspires you take action. It is all about overcoming inertia and any sluggish behaviour that may have be plaguing you recently.

Martial energy will push forward through the meaning of the sign and there is always a shift in momentum when Mars changes sign.

Gemini the Twins

Gemini is the sign for multi-tasking and Mars in Mercury’s active sign helps you keep all the balls you are juggling in the air. The more balls you have the higher you have to throw them. Yeah…

You may not get much finalized at this time but there will be lots of activity and brainstorming.

Get you thinking cap on and forge ahead carving out your ideas for world domination.

We want to see you win.

Mars in Gemini

Gemini is not the easiest placement for Mars. It can work for you and it depends on what you are trying to do.

Mars is all about activity and having the energy to expend. The knack is to make an effort where it matters.

It is best to work with the cosmic energy and not against it.

The Building Blocks of a Chart

This is a beginner series of posts about starting to read a horoscope and what you need to know as opposed to the flood of options you have to learn stuff about astrology.

I have condensed it into bite sized chunks of information to get you started.

Overview of the Parts of a Chart

Astrology has four main building blocks you need to understand to read a chart. One of the is the signs.

The others are;

Along with the chart points.

And a closer look at sign qualities and elements.

And a million other things…

But the first things you need to know are the basic four building blocks.

Start Here

by Alison Price

Here are the basics of astrology and what you need to know to read a horoscope or birth chart.

Building Blocks

There are four building blocks to chart reading:

And on top of that you need to know about chart division and chart points.

Master the Basics

If you are learning astrology you will do yourself a favour if you can grasp these basics. Then when you do read more intermediate or advanced astrology it will make more sense.

As a kid when you learned how to read it was one step at a time. First the alphabet J-a-c-k, then words Jack, and then sentences “See Jack.”

Astrology interpretation is much like learning to read.

Series

This series of posts will give you all the basic keywords and facts you need to understand the nature of astrology.

Yes, of course there is more but these are the “See Jack , see Jack run” basic components so you can begin.

More to follow.

Basic Chart Interpretations

This series looks at what to do to get a chart that you can work with in the first place.

Step 1 – Printing the chart

Step 2 – Highlighting the physical chart

Step 3 – Margin notes

Step 4 – the Interpretation notes

Your Zodiac Sign and Spending

by Alison Price

You can learn a lot about your spending habits by looking at your star sign.

Each of the twelve zodiac signs has a different approach to retail therapy. Next time you go shopping with your friends see their spending characteristics at play.

Check out each sign’s buying instincts below and see if you recognize yourself.

Aries

Aries rushes in where angels fear to tread, and in their hurry Rams want to be in and out of the shop. They buy with cash and online so as to grab the new stuff and be wearing the latest colors of the season.

This sign likes the challenge of hunting for a bargain and may easily tackle you to the ground at a fire sale.

Taurus

Taurus takes their time deciding on what to spend their hard earned cash. Bulls prefer to shop in stores, and not online, because they want to touch and feel the goods before buying.

After a day of trawling the shops they are just as likely to bank the money and go home empty handed. Sometimes parting with the cash is the quandary.

Gemini

Gemini likes buying on eBay and sniping the auction at the end. They order books and magazines, apps, games and puzzles. Twins are the best traders in the zodiac and will happily barter for stuff as the real fun is the actual deal.

You are more likely to see Gemini selling to you, than buying for themselves.

Cancer

Cancers like to feather their nest and will splurge on home furnishings and tableware. They like pretty cutlery and plates to match the occasion, whether for a barbecue outside or a Sunday lunch.

Every meal is important and this means the props as well. Crabs like home shopping and will spend on friends, family and will remember to take the office a box of chocolates.

Leo

Leos buy the best they can afford and that goes for luxury items as well. Lions take pride in their purchases and will enthral anyone who will listen about what they bought to adoring oohs and aahs. They will shop in groups and make sure each person has a little something to take home. Leo’s are generous and may spring for lunch as well.

They will shop in groups and make sure each person has a little something to take home. Leo’s are generous and may spring for lunch as well.

Virgo

Virgo spends in small increments and can drive the shop girl wild with their bag of small change for a fifty dollar purchase. They like to collect and will slowly attain the things they want.

Virgo likes things in patchwork, marquetry and paisley patterns. Virgins are more likely to go to the stores several times a day than do one big shop all at once.

Libra

Libra spends on themselves as much as their partner because there has to be a fiscal balance in their relationship.

Libra men may only buy one big item a year, like a car, but its cost will be equal to what their wife spent over the years. Shopping can be agony for Libra as they are not good at deciding and every transaction choice needs to be called.

Scorpio

Scorpio pays cash so there is no paper trail. They like acquiring things and surround themselves with items that mean something.

Scorpions will to remove price tags and hoard some attractive items of value. They like to buy things that others desire and may become a collector of rare books or surgical instruments.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius likes to buy when away from home. They are the ones for whom the souvenir shops were made. Archers seek out things that are difficult to find like a seed pod from a baobab tree or exotic spices from Asia.

This sign arrives home and flings the bags in a corner not even opening them, already planning their next excursion to the mall.

Capricorn

Capricorn invests. When the Sea Goat goes shopping the items they buy have to earn their place. Not for them trivial trinkets.

Capricorn likes quality and will pay whatever it takes to get items perceived as status pieces. Expensive handbags for the women and watches for men. Over the years they can amass a very respectable wardrobe or collection of goodies.

Aquarius

Aquarius like to buy a variety of goods. They love snapping up music and books online and gadgets. They get bored with their stuff and will move on to the next fad as soon as it takes their fancy. Water Bearers have basements full of old things and should invite Scorpio around to rummage through it all.

Water Bearers have basements full of old things and should invite Scorpio around to rummage through it all.

Pisces

Pisces enjoy art and soft and beautiful things. They are happy to tag along with the other signs on an outing to the shops. Fish like to buy only what is needed and can be frugal to the extent that they will “do without” when they should be buying things. Fish don’t like the crush of the malls and will shop late in the evening to miss the crowds.

The Astrology of Autumn

by Alison Price

Autumn

The Four Seasons

There are four seasons each year; spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The seasons start when the Sun enters one of the four cardinal signs which are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

These seasonal ingresses are the time markers for the year and the basis for calculating the tropical zodiac, which is the one used on my site, and that references time not space.

The Sun spends three months, or one quarter of the year, in each season.

Autumn or Fall

As the Sun leaves Virgo and enters Libra the third season of the year Autumn begins.

During its passage of Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius the autumn season develops and the beginning is very different to the end.

Mild temperatures at the start of Libra lead through to cooling and far crisper weather at the end of Sagittarius.

The Harvest

Autumn is the time to gather in the crops and store grains to sustain animals and us over the long winter and into the early spring.

We who live in the developed world and reside in major cities may be slightly out of touch with the sequence of growth and harvest for food.

We just pop into the local deli or bakery and pick up a fresh loaf of bread, baked and sliced that morning.

Rural dweller on farms and small-holdings do notice the changing year more closely.

Libra

Venus rules Libra and she also rules sugar and the fructose in all fruits and berries.

During the Libra part of autumn the late fruit is harvested (the early fruit harvest starts at Lammas on August 1st).

Typically at this stage the food plants have their sugars fully developed even in crops like onions and potatoes.

Plants are ripe and juicy.

Scorpio

As the Sun enters Scorpio the leaves fall profusely and annual plants start to decompose to provide nutrients for the next year’s trees and crops.

This is the transformation period of plant’s decay and part of the cycle of nature.

It is reflected in astrology by the Sun being disposed by Pluto as the ruler of Scorpio.

In many plants the seeds for the next year are being created in pods and flower heads and they wait for the Sagittarian breezes to blow them hither and thither.

Seed distribution is a process of autumn and can be spread over the whole three months.

Sagittarius

The last sign of autumn is Sagittarius.

By now all the leaves have fallen and bare branches abound and this allows the wind to whisk through the branches.

Jupiter’s influence as the planet of Sagittarius now disposes the Sun and we can see much further through the trees and our horizons are broadened at this time.

The late crops are now in and the animals have grown in their thicker coats ready for the cold ahead.

The final migrations have finished and long journeys by birds and herds have come to an end.

Did you notice? Really?

Did you notice all this going on?

No?

Neither did I.

But I live in Vancouver city where I can see the changing seasons by the trees in the streets being stripped bare and the varying colours throughout the city’s parks.

This year I hope to pay more attention, will you?

Uranus Half-Return

by Alison Price

Planetary returns

All of the planets orbit the Sun. The length of time each one takes to make its journey is dependent on its distance from the centre of the solar system. The further out a planet is the longer the orbit.

Our Earth takes one year to come back to the same place on the zodiac. The infamous Saturn return occurs at the age of twenty-nine. Past Saturn is Uranus the ruler of Aquarius.

Uranus requires eighty-four earth years to make one complete Uranian year. It happens for us as octogenarians and is known as the Uranus return. A Uranus half return occurs when transiting Uranus gets half way round the Sun and a transiting Uranus opposition natal Uranus aspect is formed.

Unless an outer planet (Uranus, Neptune or Pluto) are connected to your Sun, Moon  Ascendant or prominent in other ways they can languish quietly tucked up in a house of your chart and you don’t know they are there. Then one day a transiting planetary configuration occurs and you are (in the case of Uranus) awakened.

Uranus transits

To experience a Uranus transit it is a bit like jarring your funny bone when you are suddenly made aware of its presence by the jangle down your arm and it is not funny at all!

The Uranus half return is humorously known as the “Harley Davidson aspect” because it occurs at time in life when guys throw up their lives, buy a hog and drive out towards a new and exciting future.

Key themes for this period are break-ups, break-downs and break-outs. Life in general can be difficult when Uranus opposes its natal place. By the early forties Uranus has travelled half way around your chart and now takes the stance of looking back at its birth position and the you ask yourself “Is that all I’ve done?” and “What happened to the younger me?”

Separation can occur now and it is often regarding your growing dissatisfaction with life. There is a feeling that “It’s now of never” and “I have to do this while I’m still young.” In this way some people may throw up things and not look back. They will revolutionize certain areas of their lives which are suggested by the natal placement of Uranus.

uranus-11625_960_720

Here is a story of this aspect at work:

A woman looks out from her porch and gazes on her garden. There is a large tree offering shade and her children play there. She and her husband sometimes sip lemonade sitting in the seat under the cool of the branches.

Life is good.

Then one day a storm breaks and the tree is suddenly struck by lightening. The dead fractured tree has to be broken up and removed from the property and along with it the protection and comfort it had provided for all those years.

Now the woman looks from her porch and is faced with a different landscape. New vistas have opened up. She can see down the valley and just make out the distant hills.

She asks herself “What is that twinkling in the distance? Why it is the old waterfall flowing down to the river below.”

The beauty spot had been there all along but she had forgotten about it. Perhaps she should take a walk there tomorrow and have a look…

The upside

When forecasting you have to always consider the upside of every transit even tough ones from the outers.

Mars in Sagittarius

by Alison Price

Mars enters Sagittarius

Mars wants to compete and initiate things. Sagittarius is keen to be on a journey be it religious, educational, philosophical or physical. Here the sprinter (Mars) meets the marathon runner (Sagittarius).

What to expect

  • Defenders of the faith come from from all sides.
  • Adventure and excitement abounds.
  • Your energy is scattered now and it may be hard to focus.
  • You easily justify your actions.
  • Sport and competition are favored.
  • Journeys begun now will be enlightening.

To make use of astrology properly you need to find ways to work with the planetary potentials of the moment. You’ve gotta to know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.

Whilst Mars is energizing Sagittarius you can take the initiative and get your plans moving.

Steady now, you may want to start too many things at once. This is the time to pick your battles but not go overboard.

Fortune favors the brave

If you have a long term project that has been languishing on the back burner it can be begun now. Have faith and simply start. Perhaps your adventure awaits.

Every journey begins with the first step. Take yours as Mars strides through Sagittarius.

Saturn in Scorpio

by Alison Price

Controlled Resources

Scorpio is the sign concerned with (amongst other things) money owed, debt levels, mortgages, insurances, wills and estates.

So when Saturn moves into Scorpio we can expect stricter controls, restrictions and virtually being caught between a rock and a hard place to become the norm.

Credit will be curtailed. Lenders will tighten up even more. During this period cash is king.

You can expect to be approached by people you know to lend them money. This may sound laughable at the moment because maybe you do not have much yourself, but when this time comes along, you will be richer than those asking for the loan.

We also need to remember that Scorpio is the sign of death, murder and violence. Scorpio also is concerned with sex and perversion. During the transit of Saturn these events should be restricted and controlled better.

Saturn is the planet that rules governments but forced restrictions on any population do not always work out the way those in authority would like.

1982 Saturn in Scorpio: Resources and mining

To see how Saturn is likely to work through Scorpio we can look back to when it was last there which is thirty odd years ago. Saturn entered Scorpio in December 1982.

We can consider how was the situation with the government (Saturn) back then. I can’t remember all the details but I do know that in July 1985 the country where I was living  went under a state of emergency because of the mining unrest. There was a curfew in major cities and rioting in the streets.

We also saw restrictions on gasoline sales. You could not buy gasoline after 6:00pm or on a Saturday or Sunday. This is another example of how governments (Saturn) restricts certain the resources (Scorpio) of the Earth.

Oil and gas are a focus as they are created deep underground by pressure (Scorpio). Remember the pressure cooker?

Saturn limits everything it touches. During this period the gold price is probably going to rise because the mines cannot get production up. Output will be limited either by the government or industrial strike action.

Gold is always high on the list when there are restrictions on the monetary base. Saturn teaches us hard lessons in life.

Scorpio ascendants start a diet

If you have a Scorpio ascendant you will change physically and look different. This will occur when transiting Saturn leaves Libra and goes into Scorpio it will very soon cross your own ascendant going into your first house.

This indicates a time for limited physical mobility or heavy lifting as in, weights at the gym. Firming up they bod.

It can be a time of actually reducing body mass (losing weight) because of a lack created by Saturn. It can also be a time when you may feel older or even get wrinkles. Argh!

Coping with resource restrictions

If we look at a simple resource that can be restricted, such as food, during the Saturn in Scorpio period my suggestions are as follows:

  • Take what you want but eat what you take, don’t waste food.
  • Prepare yourself a strict budget and menu plan.
  • Only buy what you need.
  • Eat more cold food.
  • Don’t turn on the oven to make a piece of toast.
  • Do not waste energy.
  • This is the time to cultivate your own vegetables (in a cold frame).
  • It is a time to preserve (Saturn) fruits in jams and chutneys.
  • Practice self sufficiency.

These are just some examples of how you can work with the Saturn influences when it moves through the different signs.

I am considering the water crisis (Scorpio) which will probably escalate and literally become the “Blue Gold” previously only seen in sci-fi movies.

Obviously during Saturn through Scorpio you perhaps should not take more credit. You could strive to respect your financial commitments and pay your bills on time.

If you recall the old adage of “Never a borrower or a lender be” that one sits well for Saturn in Scorpio.

The astrology suggests we will experience a credit dry-up. This will be the initial affect and as Saturn moves towards the end of Scorpio and passes out into Sagittarius. Only then will we see the final effects of the Saturn transit of Scorpio.

It is at times like this that I feel the need to save cold hard cash in a shoebox under my mattress.

Maybe this is simplistic but to me it is a solution to get through the two-year period when Saturn is in Scorpio.

Saturn will probably leave Scorpio with a legacy of tighter restrictions on the resources of the Earth both financial, mineral (mining) and vegetable (food) which will carry on into the future.

The Modes in Astrology

by Alison Price

The Naming of the Modes goes In and Out of Fashion

Back in the seventies, they were referred to as the quadruplicities or qualities and yet nowadays simply as the modes.

Our modern classification is based on ancient ideas for categorization.

It all begins with the sign’s natural relationship with the angles (Ascendant, IC, Descendant and MC) and the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter).

Even today the seasons officially begin when the Sun enters the four cardinal signs.

Astrology has its roots in the northern hemisphere and references to spring and autumn are northern-centric terminology. South of the equator spring and autumn are reversed as are summer and winter.

Cardinal Signs

The cardinal signs were originally divided into subsets of tropical and equinoctal containing two signs each.

Tropical Signs

Cancer and Capricorn are the signs which begin directly after the solstices.

Where the Sun seemingly turns back towards the equator at the latitude limits of the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

These herald the start of summer and winter.

Equinoctal Signs

The two equinoctal signs are Aries and Libra. For these are the signs that begin at the two equinoxes.

When the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north or south. It is also the point of the solar nodes.

The sign Aries starts at the vernal equinox and Libra begins at the autumnal equinox (where day and night are in balance).

Fixed Signs

The fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius follow after the tropical and equinoctial signs.

These are the signs during the mid-season period of the year.

Here the weather is milder, stable, agreeable and less prone to extremes of heat or cold.

Bicorporeal Signs

Bicorporeal is the old name for mutable signs. Bi means two and corporeal means of the body.

These signs are depicted by symbols of two animals they are known as the dual signs.

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are the bicorporeal signs.

The symbol for Gemini is the pair of twins.

For Virgo, it is the image of the maiden (who may be pregnant? Hmm, I’ll have to think about this).

The representation for Sagittarius is the centaur shown with the body of a horse and the head and torso of a man.

The last sign Pisces is the two fish tethered and swimming in opposite directions.

If you are a Mercurial type you may find it interesting to know these older terms but in contemporary astrology, they are probably relegated to the tricky words found in an astrology crossword puzzle.
