Synastry: Planetary Gender

Genders of the Planets

One-to-one Relationships

In relationship astrology, older texts often assume a partnership between a man and a woman. Today we know relationships are far more diverse, and our language and approach need to reflect that reality.

When working with synastry, the planets do not represent fixed genders. Instead, they describe roles, expressions and dynamics within a relationship. Which planets you use to represent yourself or your partner depends on who you are, how you identify and how the relationship functions.

Some planets carry traditionally active or receptive qualities, while others are more fluid and adaptable. These qualities can shift depending on the people involved and the context of the chart. The key is to focus less on gender and more on how planetary energies are being expressed between two individuals.

Astrology works best when it reflects lived experience. Let the chart show you the story rather than forcing it into outdated assumptions.

Masculine Planets

Traditionally, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are described as expressing masculine or outward moving qualities in astrology.

Feminine Planets

Traditionally, the Moon, Venus and Eris are associated with feminine or receptive qualities in astrology. To bring greater balance and nuance, many astrologers also work with the asteroids, most of which express feminine archetypes, such as Ceres, Juno, Pallas Athene and Vesta.

Neutral Planets

Mercury is generally considered the primary neutral planet, and some astrologers also place Uranus in this category due to its fluid and unconventional expression.

Personal Planets

In relationship work, astrologers usually focus on the five main personal planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars.

Traditional Masculine and Feminine Planets

Masculine and Feminine Planets in Synastry

In synastry, certain planets are traditionally associated with “masculine” qualities such as outward action, assertion and initiative, while others are associated with “feminine” qualities like receptivity, nurturing and attraction.

Masculine Planets

Sun and Mars

Feminine Planets

Moon and Venus

How these planets show up depends on the individual and the relationship context.

In a Person Expressing Traditionally Masculine Energy

Sun and Mars show how they assert themselves, take action, and step into their active role in relationships.

Moon and Venus reveal the qualities they are naturally drawn to in others—the kind of emotional and relational energy they feel most compatible with.

In a Person Expressing Traditionally Feminine Energy

Moon and Venus show how they nurture, receive love and express relational warmth.

Sun and Mars reveal the qualities they are naturally drawn to in others such as the type of drive, energy or confidence which resonates with them.

This framework is about patterns of energy and attraction, not fixed gender roles. It helps illuminate how each person gives and receives energy in a relationship and what qualities naturally draw them in.

Masculine Planets in Synastry

Ejecting Energy

In synastry, planets traditionally described as masculine point to outward expression, initiative and how energy is directed into the relationship. These planets show how we act, pursue and assert ourselves with another person. Rather than focusing on gender, it is more useful to see these planets as describing active roles and conscious engagement.

The Sun in Synastry

The Sun represents vitality, identity and the core sense of self. In synastry, the condition of the Sun by sign, house and aspect shows how alive and seen you feel within the relationship.

It reflects your zest for life and how encouraged you feel to shine as yourself. The Sun also relates to creative life force, including attitudes toward children, parenting and legacy. It can show your openness to a partner’s children or the idea of creating something meaningful together.

In relationship dynamics, the Sun describes the qualities you admire and respect in a partner and the traits you naturally express when you are confident and authentic. It shows where honesty feels possible and where you feel recognized.

The Sun also connects to father figures, authority and role models. In synastry, it can reveal how parental patterns are replayed, supported or healed through partnership.

sun-glyph-leo

Mars in Synastry

Mars represents drive, desire and how energy is released. In synastry, Mars shows how passion, attraction and action flow between two people.

It describes energy levels and stamina within the relationship and highlights sexual chemistry and physical attraction. Mars reveals what sparks desire, what creates excitement and what motivates you to pursue your partner.

This planet also governs competition and assertion. It can show where you challenge each other, play together or push one another to improve. Mars plays a key role in how conflict is handled, including how disagreements arise and how resolution is reached.

Mars shows where effort is applied and where frustrations may surface. When Mars is strongly connected to Mercury, communication can become heated, leading to sharp words or arguments if energy is not managed consciously.

In synastry, Mars asks an important question: how do we act together when emotions run high?

mars-glyph

Feminine Planets in Synastry

Absorbing Energy

In synastry, planets traditionally described as feminine point to receptivity, bonding and emotional exchange. These planets show how we receive love, offer care and create safety within relationships. Rather than referring to gender, they describe inner responses and emotional attunement.

The Moon in Synastry

The Moon represents emotional needs, instinctive responses and the desire for comfort and belonging. In synastry, the Moon’s condition by sign, house and aspect shows how emotionally safe and understood you feel with a partner.

It reflects emotional depth and your comfort level with expressing feelings. The Moon reveals how you nurture and how you wish to be nurtured in return. It also indicates how easily a partner feels like part of your inner circle, family or chosen clan.

The Moon is linked to home and survival needs, including food, shelter and emotional protection. In synastry, it can show whether a partner supports your need for security and how domestic life flows between you.

This planet also connects to maternal influences and early conditioning. In relationship charts, the Moon can reveal how family patterns are repeated or softened and how maternal figures are allowed to participate in your shared life. It often points to the emotional templates learned from caregivers and female role models.

moon-glyph

Venus in Synastry

Venus represents love, attraction, harmony and shared values. In synastry, Venus shows what and who you are drawn to and what makes you feel appreciated and cherished.

It reveals what you find attractive, what you admire and how affection is expressed. Venus also describes the style of love you seek and the qualities that make a relationship feel pleasurable and balanced.

Venus has a practical side as well. It relates to financial expectations, shared resources and what you are willing to invest in a partner or relationship. In synastry, it can show what you need to feel secure enough to commit and what kind of partnership you are aiming to build.

Ultimately, Venus in synastry answers an essential question: what makes love feel worth choosing, again and again?

venus-glyphe

Mercury in Synastry

The Bridge Between You

Mercury holds a unique place in synastry. It is often considered neutral, yet it plays one of the most important roles in relationship astrology. Mercury shows how two people connect mentally, exchange ideas and make sense of each other.

mercury-glyph

Mercury in Synastry

Mercury represents communication, perception and understanding. In synastry, its condition by sign, house and aspect reveals how easily you talk to one another and how well you feel heard.

It shows your conversational rhythm, including how you listen, respond and process information together. Strong Mercury contacts often indicate effortless dialogue, shared humor and mental rapport. Challenging contacts can point to misunderstandings, crossed wires or differences in thinking styles that require patience.

Mercury also governs learning and curiosity. In relationships, it highlights where you teach each other, exchange skills or stimulate one another intellectually. This planet often explains why some connections feel mentally alive while others fall flat.

In conflict, Mercury reveals how issues are discussed and resolved. It shows whether disagreements are talked through calmly or escalate through sharp words and assumptions. When Mercury is well supported, communication becomes a tool for clarity and connection rather than division.

Mercury acts as the translator between inner feelings and outward action. In synastry, it bridges emotional needs and desires, helping partners articulate what they feel and want. Without Mercury working well, even strong attraction or emotional bonding can struggle to find expression.

The Social and Outer Planets in Synastry

Superior Planets

The superior planets are every planet outside the Earth’s orbit starting at Mars and going outwards.

The social planets are Jupiter and Saturn. The outer planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

These planets work more slowly and deeply. In synastry they describe meaning, structure and long-term impact. They often explain why some relationships feel expansive, serious or life changing.

Jupiter in Synastry

Growth and Meaning

Jupiter shows where a relationship brings growth, optimism and opportunity. In synastry, Jupiter’s condition by sign, house and aspect reveals how partners encourage one another and where life feels bigger together.

Jupiter indicates shared beliefs, moral values and long range goals. It suggests where you support each other’s dreams and where enthusiasm flows easily. This planet often brings generosity, forgiveness and a sense of goodwill between partners.

Jupiter contacts can highlight teaching, mentoring or learning together. At times it can also show excess or unrealistic expectations if boundaries are weak. In synastry, Jupiter highlights where the relationship helps you grow and also where you may promise more than you can deliver.

Jupiter-glyph

Saturn in Synastry

Commitment and Reality

Saturn is one of the most important planets in relationship astrology. In synastry, Saturn shows responsibility, boundaries and the long term commitment needed for marriage.

This planet reveals where your relationship feels serious and where lessons are learned through effort and time. Saturn contacts often indicate endurance and staying power but they can also feel heavy if fear or control takes over.

Saturn shows where structure is built and where trust must be earned. It highlights duties, obligations and all of your shared responsibilities. In healthy synastry, Saturn provides stability and a sense of reliability. In difficult expressions, it can feel restrictive or emotionally distant.

Saturn asks an essential question in relationships which is, “What are we willing to work for together?”

Saturn-glyph

Uranus in Synastry

Change and Freedom

Uranus brings surprise and awakening. In synastry, Uranus shows where the relationship feels electric, unconventional or unpredictable.

This planet often points to sudden meetings or unusual dynamics. Partners may encourage each other to break free from old patterns and explore new ways of being. Uranus can bring excitement and originality, but it can also create instability if freedom is threatened.

Uranus in synastry indicates where change is needed and how much space each person requires to stay true to themselves within the union.

Uranus-glyph

Neptune in Synastry

Dreams and Idealization

Neptune dissolves boundaries and heightens sensitivity. In synastry, Neptune shows where idealism, compassion and spiritual connection arise.

This planet can create deep emotional or spiritual bonding but it can also blur reality. Neptune contacts often bring projection, fantasy or confusion if clarity is lacking.

Neptune highlights empathy, creativity and shared dreams. It also warns where honesty and grounding are essential to avoid disappointment. In synastry, Neptune hints at what you are truly seeing and what you may be imagining.

Neptune-glyph

Pluto in Synastry

Power and Transformation

Pluto brings intensity and profound change. In synastry, Pluto shows where your deep psychological transformation will occur by knowing this person.

This planet reveals power dynamics, emotional depth and the potential for healing or control issues. Pluto contacts are rarely casual, but rather they feel fated or unavoidable.

Pluto in synastry can lead to personal growth through vulnerability and truth. It can also expose fears around loss, trust and surrender. This planet alludes to whether transformation for you both will be conscious and healing or driven by compulsion.

Pluto-glyph

Chiron and Eris in Synastry

Rash and Raw

These bodies work differently from the traditional planets. In synastry they highlight sensitivity, disruption and truth telling. They often reveal where relationships touch raw or weeping and oozing places and where growth comes through honesty rather than comfort.

Chiron in Synastry

The Wound and the Healer

Chiron represents vulnerability, healing and the places where we feel exposed. In synastry, Chiron shows where a partner touches, and may irritate, an old wound and how healing may emerge through awareness and compassion.

Chiron’s planetary complex by sign, house and aspect reveals where pain may surface in the relationship. This can feel tender or uncomfortable at first. Partners may unintentionally trigger insecurities or past experiences that have not fully healed.

At the same time, Chiron offers the potential for deep healing. When handled with care, this placement can create profound understanding and mutual support. The relationship becomes a space where growth occurs through acceptance rather than fixing.

Chiron in synastry asks a gentle question which is, “Can we sit with vulnerability and allow healing to unfold naturally or is the pain too much?”

Chiron-glyph

Eris in Synastry

Disruption and Truth

Eris represents discord, strife and the refusal to be ignored. In synastry, Eris shows where tension arises which actually forces honesty and change.

Eris highlights areas in your relationship where one partner may challenge the status quo or bring hidden issues into the open. This can feel unsettling but it often exposes truths that have been avoided. Eris does not seek comfort, but rather she seeks authenticity.

In relationships, Eris can stir conflict when voices have been suppressed or needs overlooked. When consciously engaged, this dynamic energy helps rebalance power and encourages fairness and self-respect.

Eris in synastry denotes where disruption is necessary for growth and where truth needs space to be spoken.

Be Yourself

If there is one thing synastry teaches us, it is that planets are far less interested in labels than we are. They simply show up, do their thing and stir the pot exactly where we need it stirred. Masculine, feminine, neutral, social, outer, wounded or disruptive, each planet plays a role in revealing how we connect, clash, grow and occasionally drive each other slightly mad.

Be yourself, everyone else is taken. – Oscar Wilde

Magic

So, take what resonates, leave what does not and remember that charts are maps, not rulebooks. The real magic happens when you let the symbolism breathe and allow the story of the relationship to unfold in its own wonderfully human way.

Back to Basics

Back to Basics

 ❤️ Basic Natal Astrology

This article is part of my Basic Natal Astrology category and brings all the beginner components of interpreting a natal chart together. This includes signs, planets, houses, aspects and more. Alison

Sometimes it’s good to get back-to-basics with astrology and here I mean avoiding going down the complicated roads which are scattered liberally throughout any astrology reading or forecast. Alison

Basics

Distractions

Personally, I always like to try out any new technique or astro hack that I’ve happened upon in the past week. This could be anything from checking a Mars to Saturn cross chart aspect to idly exploring the Part of Marriage for a couple whom I’ve just met.

Sometimes it fun to get into the highfaluting parts of astrology readings and there certainly are many of them, but now and then I like to get back to the basics.

Cornerstones

The astrology basics are the signs, planets, houses and aspects, the backbone of chart reading if you will. These four cornerstone components when fully understood will help you provide a better reading for you family, friends and clients. It’s a bit like going back to school to relearn what you think you know.

We all do it.

You’ve been reading charts for ten years and you think you know it all. But to spend a day or two each month revisiting the basics of chart components will stand you in good stead for the charts you will read later this year.

Back to Basics Podcast Episode

For some quick insights listen to our Back to Basics Starzology Astrology podcast episode where Arwynne and I discuss some ideas on learning more astrology to benefit yourself and your clients.

Signs

Capricorn

You know which sign is your weakest one. You know, the one that you’re not really sure of and can never remember the keywords for. For me that tends to be Capricorn. I’m constantly going back over my notes to understand this sign better.

That Capricorn is quincunx my Leo Sun is part of the equation. I’m constantly having to adjust my ideas on the cardinal earth sign as the years go by.

Pisces

The other sign which is quincunx my Leo is Pisces, but here I do have an advantage.

In my life I am fortunate to know a delightful load of mutable water people. My mother, father, sister and daughter are all Pisces.

I am almost swimming in Pisces energy and have been aware of it in action all my life. No surprise there, only that they do what they do.

It all about the shoes…

Planets

Drawing a Blank

Which planet do you know the least about?

You know, the one that you tend to draw a blank on when caught in conversation with your client.

For me this planet is Neptune, so no surprise there. By its very nature Neptune is elusive and a mystery.

Again, I believe (see what I did there?), I believe that it is because the sign which Neptune rules is the sign of The Fish, and that sign too is quincunx my Leo.

More on Neptune

Neptune understands, dissolves and eludes. The people that Neptune represents are dreamers, ghosts, angels and nomads. Neptune rules Pisces.

Neptune

Aspects

Quincunx

Are we seeing a pattern here?

Does this automatically mean that the aspect which I struggle with the most is the lowly quincunx at a mere 150° and with a tight orb of only 2°?

Perhaps.

Ptolemaic

I am far more confident with the big five Ptolemaic aspects which are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square and sextile. These aspects I know well and can wax lyrical about for hours.

Quintiles

Additionally, I love the five-base aspects, the quintiles and bi-quintiles. These aspects are great and show creativity (which I love) and your natural talents.

Brilliant!

Let’s have them too.

So yes, maybe when I go back-to-basics with the aspects I revisit the quincunx aspect which is five signs apart from my Sun and is the one which brings awkwardness and demands adjustments in my thinking.

Houses

12th House

Most of the houses I’m pretty strong on. I know them very well, but now and then I have to pause and perhaps you’ve already guessed it?

I often refresh my memory around the 12th houseThis is a very quiet house and is not really exciting like the 1st, 10th or 5th houses are. The twelfth house tends to be quiet, subdued, and things in it are done privately or in secret.

As an astrologer, one never really knows how someone will use the energy, or not, found in this house and what goes on behind closed doors.

Traditionally it is the house of self-undoing, of recouperation and convalescing (post-partum) and or being in solitude self-imposed (retreating) or forced upon you (incarceration).

Going Forward

Going Back

When you’ve been doing astrology for over thirty years you do know a lot and you may become complacent in your knowledge in general.

I believe that we can all benefit from some self-reflection and the action of revisiting some cornerstones of astrology to build our own solid foundation of knowledge.

You may have learned your astrology decades ago and if so, it will do you good to enliven your ideas on certain signs, planets, houses or aspects.

Seasonal

You don’t have to be doing this every day or every week for that matter. I like to do some back-to-basic work once each season. The four seasons are winter, spring, summer and autumn. They start at the solstices and equinoxes.

Because we as good astrologers are paying attention to the Sun’s annual ingresses into the four cardinal signs, it can be a great reminder to practice some back-to-basics studying for ourselves.

Extend Yourself

Take a moment to consider in which of the four cornerstones you are weakest in your knowledge.

In your astrology journal note your weakest:

  • Sign
  • Planet
  • House
  • Aspect

Awareness

Don’t feel you have to tackle all of these right now but do yourself a favor and address one weakness this season to improve your astrology knowledge for the future.

You will become a better astrologer for it and your readings for your family, friends and clients will improve as well.

Everyone benefits.

Overarch

Growth or Stagnate

It’s one thing to have twenty years of experience and another to have one year of experience twenty times. In the former you are growing and, in the latter, you are stagnant.

Make sure you develop your astrology knowledge each year through simple seasonal reflection. Actively do some self-imposed revisiting of what you thought you knew.

Astrological Symbology

Astrological Symbology

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: October 2024

Symbology

In this post I want to chat with you guys a little bit about symbology. Specifically, symbolically in the New Age space and symbology in astrology. Basic shapes are symbolic in themselves. Even the simple shapes like the circles and the lines have meaning. It’s only as we start to explore New Age topics such as astrology that you come across the symbology within shapes. When you take it one step further and look closely at the planetary glyphs, you can see this symbology in action.

Even though these days there are very stylized drawings for the planet symbols, if you break them down to their simplistic parts you can see hidden meaning within each of the planets. Personally, I think this is a very interesting topic and it gives you something to think about as you’re learning to even practice drawing the planetary glyphs.

Once you get the idea that shapes are symbolic and have meaning, you can see them in everyday life as well through some business logos and what you see as you go about your day. I’m just giving you an introduction to the meanings of the basic shapes and how they are expressed through the planetary glyphs.

Circles

The circle represents the spirit and the cosmos. Furthermore, the circle itself is constructed from something. The unbroken line on nothing. The space inside and outside the line. The circle unifies spirit and matter. This structure itself has great strength.

Circles of Feminine

The perfect circle has no beginning and no end. It is unassailable. The magic circle creates a fortress of psychic protection. A physical and spiritual safe haven where unwanted or uninvited entities cannot enter.

Hermes Trismegistus said of the circle, “God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and circumference is nowhere.

Arcs and Crescents

Arcs or crescents are parts of a circle. One clear example is a rainbow. As part of a circle, the arc symbolizes the spirit as well. The position of the arc is important as well.

Upright Arcs

If an arc upright or shaped like a cup or chalice, it implies the feminine principle of containment within the womb.It contains the spirit.

Inverted Arcs

If the arc is inverted like an umbrella, then the opposition is true. Now it becomes a triumphal, victorious masculine symbol thrusting upwards. The inverted arc is often on church doors and is representative of the vault of heaven. The arc shape often appears in planetary symbols.

symbology-curves

Lines

Vertical Lines

The vertical line represents the physical symbol of the number one and man striving towards spirit. The simple line is the basic shape of the World Tree, or the axis Mundi that connects the heavens, the earth and the lower regions. It is not only a basic phallic symbol, but also signifies the soul that strives for union with the divine.

Horizontal Lines

The horizontal line is opposite of the vertical line. It represents matter and the forward and backward movement of time. This line also signifies the skyline or horizon and man’s place on the earth.

Crosses

In across, the vertical and horizontal come together to form a cross. The cross symbolizes the union of the material and the spiritual. And in some instances, the cross is said to give birth to the square. Because of its four cardinal points, the cross represents the elements and the directions of north, south, east and west.

Squares

The square represents the Earth and the four elements.

Plato described the square, “Like the circle, as being absolutely beautiful in itself.”

Astrology Planetary Glyphs

Spirit, Soul and Matter

The planetary glyphs used in astrology hold deep symbolic meanings, connecting to the concepts of spirit, soul, and matter. These three components represent the layers of existence and experience, providing a framework to understand the planets’ roles in shaping life and consciousness. Here’s a breakdown of how spirit, soul and matter are symbolically embedded in planetary glyphs.

Spirit (Circle)

In many planetary glyphs, the circle represents spirit. It signifies the eternal, the divine and the source of life. The circle has no beginning or end, symbolizing unity, wholeness and the infinite potential of consciousness. Spirit is the purest form of being, often viewed as the connection to the higher self or the divine essence that animates all life.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent shape, found in several planetary glyphs, symbolizes the soul, the vessel of experience and emotion. The soul is the part of us that navigates through life, gathering experiences, feelings, and impressions. It is the receptive aspect of consciousness, like a cup that collects the light and wisdom from spirit.

Matter (Cross)

The cross is the symbol of matter, representing the physical world, form, and structure. It often grounds the planetary glyphs, showing how spiritual energy and the soul’s experience are manifest in the material plane. The cross symbolizes the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water) and the physical reality in which spirit and soul are embodied.

Glyphs

Spirit, Soul and Matter

I want to share some of my ideas on the shapes that make up the planet’s glyphs. The combination between these three symbols (circle, crescent, and cross) in each planetary glyph shows how each planet expresses different aspects of spirit, soul and matter.

Maps of Existence

Planetary glyphs serve as symbolic maps of existence. The circle represents the infinite and eternal spirit, the crescent symbolizes the receptive and emotional soul and the cross embodies the physical and structured world of matter. Together, these symbols illustrate how the planets influence our experience, guiding the interplay between spirit, soul, and the material realm. The symbolism of the planets can be understood by exploring how they represent the dynamics between spirit, soul and matter. These planets govern the more personal aspects of life and consciousness, shaping our individual experiences and growth.

The Sun ()

Spirit

The Sun’s glyph is a circle with a dot in the center, representing pure spirit and the divine essence. The Sun symbolizes the source of life, vitality, and individuality. The circle is the unbroken, eternal symbol of wholeness, and the dot within it signifies the core self, the conscious ego, and the spark of spirit within each of us.

Soul

Though the Sun primarily represents spirit, it also illuminates the soul’s purpose. The Sun symbolizes our higher calling, the essence of who we are meant to become. It guides the soul toward self-realization and the expression of one’s true nature.

Matter

While the Sun itself doesn’t directly embody matter, it animates life in the material world. It brings warmth, growth, and vitality to the physical body and reality. Through the Sun, spirit manifests in the material plane, expressing individuality and creativity.

Symbolism

The Sun represents the manifestation of spirit in the world. It brings light and awareness to the soul’s journey and fuels the material world with life force and vitality, driving self-expression.

symbology-sun

The Moon ()

Spirit

The Moon, as a symbol of the subconscious and emotional world, doesn’t directly represent spirit but acts as a reflective vessel for the light of spirit. It mediates between the inner soul and outer experiences, reflecting the spirit’s energy through intuition, emotions, and the inner self.

Soul

The Moon’s crescent shape directly symbolizes the soul. It is receptive and reflects how the soul absorbs, reflects, and processes the experiences of life. The Moon governs emotions, instincts, memory, and the unconscious mind, where the soul navigates through feelings, nurturing, and intuition.

Matter

The Moon influences the physical body through rhythms and cycles, such as the tides and biological cycles. It connects the soul to the material realm by influencing our instinctual responses and emotional attachments to physical surroundings, home and family.

Symbolism

The Moon is the emotional and intuitive vessel of the soul, reflecting spirit and influencing the material world through cyclical patterns and nurturing connections.

moon-symbology

Mercury ()

Spirit (Circle)

In Mercury’s glyph, the circle represents spirit and connects to Mercury’s role as a bridge between the higher mind and earthly existence. Mercury governs the transmission of ideas and communication, facilitating the movement of spirit into thought and intellect.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent of soul sits atop the circle of spirit in Mercury’s glyph, symbolizing how Mercury helps the soul receive and express information. It mediates between spirit and matter, helping the soul communicate its needs, learn, and adapt to different experiences.

Matter (Cross)

The cross of matter at the bottom of Mercury’s glyph anchors its energy, showing how thoughts, communication and intellect are grounded in the physical world. Mercury governs logic, analytical thinking, and the practical application of ideas in everyday life.

Symbolism

Mercury is the mediator between spirit, soul, and matter, facilitating the flow of communication and thought. It helps translate spirit into conscious awareness and practical understanding, guiding the soul through learning and expression.

mercury-glyph

Venus ()

Spirit (Circle)

The circle in Venus’ glyph represents spirit, showing that the higher ideals of love, beauty and harmony have their origin in the divine essence. Venus connects spirit to the experience of unity, pleasure, and connection in the material world.

Soul

Venus guides the soul in its desire for connection and harmony with others. It rules relationships, affection and the soul’s longing for balance, beauty, and love. The soul, under Venus’ influence, seeks to merge with others in a harmonious and peaceful way, fostering cooperation and emotional fulfillment.

Matter (Cross)

The cross of matter beneath the circle shows how Venus expresses spiritual ideals in the physical world, particularly through relationships and beauty. It governs sensual pleasures, art, and the appreciation of material beauty, showing how the soul’s desires are manifested in the material realm.

Symbolism

Venus represents the union of spirit and matter through the soul’s longing for connection and beauty. It brings spiritual ideals into physical form, guiding relationships and the pursuit of harmony and pleasure.

Venus-symbology

Mars ()

Spirit (Circle)

Mars’ glyph contains the circle of spirit, but it is directed outward by the arrow. Mars symbolizes spirit in action, representing the drive to assert oneself, act, and initiate. It channels spirit into dynamic, purposeful activity, expressing willpower and desire.

Soul

The soul under Mars seeks action and experience. Mars governs desire, passion, and the urge to assert oneself in the world. It represents the soul’s courage to face challenges and express its willpower, driving personal development and growth through conflict and assertiveness.

Matter (Arrow)

The arrow of Mars represents matter and the physical world in motion. Mars is associated with the body, action, and the material consequences of one’s will and desires. It governs physical energy, vitality, and the power to change or shape the material world through force and action.

Symbolism

I believe that Mars symbolizes the dynamic expression of spirit and soul through matter. It channels willpower and desire into action, driving the soul to assert itself in the physical world and make tangible changes.

mars-symbol

Jupiter ()

Spirit (Circle)

Jupiter’s glyph contains the crescent of soul rising above the cross of matter, with the circle of spirit subtly implied. Jupiter represents the expansion of spirit through growth, abundanc, and wisdom. It embodies the search for meaning, higher knowledge and the spirit’s journey toward enlightenment and understanding.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent in Jupiter’s glyph shows the soul’s desire for growth, adventure, and exploration. Jupiter governs optimism, faith, and the soul’s drive to expand its horizons, seek truth, and gain wisdom. It represents the soul’s journey toward greater awareness and fulfillment.

Matter (Cross)

The cross of matter grounds Jupiter’s expansive energy, showing how spiritual and soulful growth are often pursued through experiences in the material world. Jupiter naturally governs abundance, prosperity and the ability to manifest wealth and opportunity in the physical realm.

Symbolism

Jupiter symbolizes the soul’s journey to expand its understanding of spirit through experiences in matter. It represents the search for meaning, knowledge and wisdom, guiding the soul toward greater spiritual and material fulfillment.

Jupiter-glyph

Saturn ()

Matter (Cross)

Saturn’s glyph shows a cross above a crescent, with the cross symbolizing the dominance of material reality, structure, and limitation. Saturn is often associated with boundaries, discipline, time, and karma, all elements rooted in the material plane. It reminds us that physical form and the laws of nature govern life.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent beneath the cross represents the soul’s role within these limitations. Saturn brings lessons of responsibility, maturity and endurance. The soul, under Saturn’s influence, learns through hardship, restriction and perseverance, shaping character through trials in the material world.

Spirit (Circle)

Saturn’s spirit is not as prominent in the glyph itself, but it shows up in the planet’s function. Saturn’s lessons are ultimately spiritual, forcing us to confront and overcome our fears, limitations and ego-bound structures. By embracing Saturn’s discipline, spirit is refined and given form.

Symbolism

Saturn is the planet of form and structure, showing how spirit (our higher purpose) is grounded and expressed through matter (physical boundaries). And how the soul (through experience) navigates these limitations to achieve growth.

Saturn-symbology

Uranus ()

Matter (Cross)

Uranus’ glyph shows the circle of spirit flanked by two crescents of the soul, with a cross at the bottom. The cross is the grounding point, but Uranus’ energy disrupts the material order, challenging fixed structures and traditions. This planet represents rebellion, innovation, and sudden change, often breaking apart established forms in the material world.

Soul (Crescents)

The two crescents of soul on either side of the circle show Uranus’ ability to push the soul beyond its comfort zone, awakening it to new possibilities. Uranus stimulates sudden shifts in awareness, often leading to radical transformation and the breaking of old emotional or psychic patterns.

Spirit (Circle)

The circle of spirit in the middle represents divine inspiration and universal consciousness. Uranus connects to the higher mind, flashes of insight, and the awakening of spirit that transcends the limitations of the material world. It embodies the spirit of freedom, liberation, and the urge for individuality.

Symbolism

Uranus symbolizes the awakening of spirit through the breaking down of matter and structure. It brings sudden and unpredictable change that shakes the soul out of complacency, pushing humanity toward greater consciousness and evolution.

symbology-uranus

Neptune ()

Matter (Cross)

Neptune’s glyph contains a crescent of soul above a cross of matter. The cross is faint in Neptune’s symbolism, representing the dissolving of material boundaries. Neptune’s energy is ethereal, elusive, and transcendent, often blurring the lines between physical reality and the spiritual or imaginative realms.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent at the top of Neptune’s glyph emphasizes the soul’s receptivity and sensitivity. Neptune governs intuition, dreams, and the unconscious. It dissolves the boundaries of the ego and the material world, encouraging the soul to merge with the collective, the spiritual, and the unseen.

Spirit (Implied Circle)

Neptune is the planet of spiritual longing, compassion, and the search for the divine. Though the glyph does not contain a visible circle of spirit, Neptune’s influence is deeply connected to the spiritual realm, often manifesting through mystical experiences, visions and a desire to return to source.

Symbolism

Neptune represents the dissolution of matter and the elevation of the soul toward spiritual unity. It dissolves the hard edges of reality, leading to spiritual awakening, creativity and the exploration of the unseen dimensions of life.

Neptune-symbology

Pluto

Matter (Cross)

Pluto’s glyph contains the circle of spirit above a crescent of soul, with a cross at the base. The cross of matter is the foundation, representing Pluto’s transformative power in the material world. Pluto governs death, rebirth, and regeneration, and its energy often works through deep, intense processes that fundamentally alter physical structures and forms.

Soul (Crescent)

The crescent of soul beneath the circle of spirit indicates the soul’s journey through profound transformation. Pluto governs the shadow, the unconscious, and the soul’s hidden depths. The soul under Pluto’s influence confronts the darker aspects of existence—power, fear, destruction and rebirth—transforming through these experiences.

Spirit (Circle)

The circle of spirit at the top of Pluto’s glyph suggests that Pluto’s ultimate purpose is spiritual transformation. Though it works through matter and the soul’s depths, Pluto’s influence is about the evolution of consciousness, forcing a release of the old so that something new and more aligned with spirit can emerge.

Symbolism

Pluto symbolizes the transformation of matter and the soul through the power of spirit. It destroys to create a new, guiding both personal and collective evolution through death, regeneration, and deep spiritual awakening.

Mars in Gemini

Mars in Gemini

Today I’m going to be talking about Mars in Gemini. If you’re listening to this in summer of 2024, Mars is about to enter Gemini on July 20 and will stay there until September 4. Mars moves pretty quickly so it takes about two years to go all the way around the zodiac. Due to retrograde periods, it can spend as little as six weeks in a sign to as many as seven months! Last time Mars was in Gemini was from August 20, 2022 through March 25, 2023, but this is an unusually long time for Mars to stay in one sign. It retrograded in October 2022 but it stayed in Gemini the entire time, so that’s how it can sometimes be in one sign for a very long time.

Mars in Gemini by transit

When Mars transits through the airy, mutable, masculine (or positive) sign of Gemini, it is considerably less focused than in some other signs. As we might expect with any placement in Gemini, there’s an intellectual, chatty, indecisive and scattered energy. In the northern hemisphere, this might be perfect timing because we are going through the middle of summer and who wants to make fixed decisions and doggedly pursue ambitions when warm weather, beach vacations and weekend barbecues beckon?

That being said, Gemini is not a bad placement for Mars and although we may at times feel restless and indecisive, with our attentions pulled in many different directions, we’re just as likely to also feel alive with sparkling, effervescent and positive energy. We might feel like chatting up new and old friends, dancing late into the night, hosting a game night with or sing along, enjoy summer fun like fireworks, festivals and street fairs. Even solitary activities like getting engrossed in an exciting book, binging a new TV show or podcast, could be excellent uses of Mars in Gemini energy.

As Robert Hand says in his seminal book, Planets in Transit, Mars is a planet of energy and it specifically rules the energy that an individual uses to maintain themselves in the face of pressures from their environment. Mars is also connected with work and physical effort and its transits often signify days when you become very energetic and vigorous. So, as Mars transits through different signs you want to look at where you have significant placements in those signs in your chart. If you have the sun in Gemini or Gemini rising or, of course, if you have Mars in Gemini, this transit will energize your chart in a significant way.

You also want to look at what house Mars will be transiting for you while it goes through Gemini. If you have Gemini rising, Mars will be transiting your first house and it will light up your personality your self-expression your identity, your self-esteem, and it could give you a great boost of self-confidence or indicate a time when you are presenting yourself to the world and this could be a great time for you because you’ll find it easier to express yourself in your naturally effervescent Gemini fashion with Mars lighting up your first house. It could be a great time to meet new people or make a great impression on people who already know you, champion a cause that’s close to your heart or undertake a self makeover to present yourself or your ideas in an exciting new way.

You also want to look at any aspects that Mars will be making to planets in your chart. If you have any major placements in Sagittarius, Mars will be transiting opposite those planets while it’s in Gemini, so this could bring conflicts with people, opposition to your ideas, impediments and obstacles that suddenly come up, hindering your movements and thwarting your ambitions or aims.

Any major placements you have in mutable signs will be affected by Mars transiting through Gemini as it will make hard aspects to all the mutable planets, including Virgo and Pisces which will receive squares from Mars in Gemini.

Mars in Gemini in the birth chart

As with any air sign, Mars in Gemini tends to have more mental energy and social activity associated with its martial tendencies. These people might be more the type to spar with you verbally then physically. They could be intellectually inexhaustible, pursuing higher education or gobbling up trivia like information junkies, memorizing movie quotes or song lyrics or sports statistics in order to repeat them at the ready anytime conversation turns to their topic of choice, or supplementing any pub trivia team with their sparkling, broad-based intellect.

These people love to exchange ideas and they’re motivated by communication, social and intellectual stimuli. They may be the type to go off on a political rant or some obscure tangent at the drop of a hat, or drone on about whatever personal topic fires their interest long past the point of exhausting others in the room. Used correctly, they could be excellent, engaging teachers or professors, journalists, radio hosts or podcasters, influencers, marketers or sales people.

Since Mars is one of the relationship planets, along with venus, we would look to Mars to find out what a person is like in relationships. Mars is the planet of desire and going after your object of affection, so people with Mars in Gemini will be the type who want to charm you with their wit, intellect, conversational moves and lofty ideas. Of course keeping their interest will be the real challenge. Mars in Gemini is not known for its ability to focus on one thing or one person for very long.

In Person to Person Astrology, Steven Arroyo says, “the essence of Mars in Gemini is that it asserts itself verbally, flexibly, cleverly, communicatively, through a variety of skills. The focus of one’s desire changes very quickly and often, easily diverted. Expresses a wide ranging friendliness, very good at making connections. Physical energy and sexual drive are affected by mentally stimulating conversations, images or curious new ideas, very open-minded.”

They may appear or behave especially youthful and embody a sort of ageless vitality and charm, flirting or putting on the charm for people of all ages and genders indiscriminately. This may be the guy who you dated just long enough to bring home to meet your parents one time and years later they still ask, “whatever happened to..?” He made an indelible impression and then flitted on to the next flower before you had a chance to make a real connection.

This is not to say they can’t commit. The wonderful thing about Mars in Gemini is that these people are genuinely interested in the thoughts and ideas of other people; they’re open-minded, curious and communicate well with their partners. If you make a lasting love connection with them, they could turn out to be a wonderfully stimulating and exciting partner for life, keeping you laughing well into old age, exploring new ideas and interests together long after other couples have settled into mutal silence.

Grant Lewi says, if you have Mars in Gemini, “you are rarely bored or boring, but you can wear yourself and others out by the ferocity of your attack on life. You are extraordinarily aware of the world around you, sense perceptions are acute, swift, probably accurate, and you are valuable in expressing what you take in. Energy flows naturally to the tongue; you are a better talker than listener. With any concentrated force, this position gains value, Without it, you scatter your energies.” He also cautions the Mars in Gemini individual to take care of their body as well as their mind. There is a danger of neglecting your physical well-being because you are so focused on mental pursuits.

Jupiter in Leo

Jupiter in Leo

Author: Alison Price   –   Updated: October 2025

Great Expectations

As the planets wander through the sky they change positions against the backdrop of the zodiac. This movement can be like a dance as everyone (the planets) take their place and enter the stage. At anytime one or two of the planets will take center stage as the others fade into the background for a while. Planets in prominent positions may have a story to tell, and we listen. This time it is Jupiter as he enters the fifth sign of Leo. A fire planet (Jupiter) in a fire sign (Leo). Up there right now the biggest planet in the solar system and the ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter, is entering the zodiac sign of the Lion.

Basic Natal Astrology

This article is part of my Basic Natal Astrology series, where I explore deeper chart analysis for practicing and aspiring astrologers.

Jupiter in Leo

Imagery

I often use the imagery of a hot air balloon to explain the astrological meaning for Jupiter. Balloons are big, brightly coloured and when they drift by you simply can’t miss them. Much like Jupiter. The collective noun for balloons is a festival of balloons which brings a fun and exciting element to ballooning. Much like Jupiter. They travel on their journey, but to who knows where? Much like Jupiter.

They are filled with hot air or gas, and balloons will explode if over-filled. Much like Jupiter. They often broadcast a message from their sponsors or promote special events (such as at sports events) written in huge letters on the sides of the balloon. Much like Jupiter. And I would imagine that the people who do take a ride in a hot air balloon say a prayer before launch. Much like Jupiter. I have always fancied trusting the woven basket and journeying on a balloon flight and perhaps one day I shall. Much like Jupiter.

Benefits of Jupiter in Leo

Jupiter in Leo is especially good news for the fire signs and that means those with strong fire signs present in their birth charts. I will tell you I am strongly Leo myself and I have been waiting for a while now for this shift in energy as Jupiter changes sign.

  • If you have an Aries, Leo or Sagittarian Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Jupiter or other cluster of planets in these three signs you will benefit during the upcoming year as Jupiter goes through Leo.
  • If your business chart has the fire signs emphasized as well your business can experience huge growth now.
  • If you are strongly Gemini or Libra you will see some support and some good things. You need to grasp any opportunities fleeting as they may be.
  • If you are strongly Taurus, Scorpio or Aquarius could face the difficult side and this may suggest the over excessive situations as mentioned later.
  • Those of you with strong Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces may not see much change although you will try to make adjustments this year.

Make the Most of Jupiter in Leo

Jupiter in Leo is upbeat, positive and outgoing. It encourages taking chances and aiming higher in life. Leo is the sign of the theatre and when planets enter the “stage” they will play their roles to perfection.

Using the theater analogy, Jupiter in Leo can either be the highly colorful swashbuckling much loved hero or he can be an overly costumed blow-hard in a pantomime.

The down side of Jupiter in Leo can be over-extension, over-doings things and excessive behavior. Or just too much of a good thing. Pace yourself and all will be fine.

Jupiter in Leo, what’s in it for you?

Jupiter is the planet of growth and expansion.

It has to do with reaching for things just out of your grasp but it is the reaching that is important.

We like to s-t-r-e-t-c-h ourselves when Jupiter is active.

You can lift your eyes to gaze at your horizons.

Now is the time to aspire towards previously laughable dreams. Dust off your visions and start to believe.

When Jupiter is prominent by transit, and if it contacts your chart, you can raise your profile and aim for more in life.

Jupiter will support activities in broadcasting, promotion (self and business), publishing, gaining knowledge (as opposed to information), adult education, religious temperance, international travel and cosmopolitan situations.

Jupiter in Leo reinforces the theatre and daily dramas. See them for what they are.
