Sedna

Sedna Astronomy

Sedna at a Glance

Sedna is one of the most intriguing bodies in the outer Solar System.

Although astronomers classify it as a trans-Neptunian object and a likely dwarf planet, astrologers have become increasingly interested in it because of its extraordinarily long orbit and its symbolic association with deep, collective transformation.

Orbital Period

Sedna has one of the longest known orbits of any large Solar System object with an estimated orbital period: about 11,400 years.

Distance

Average distance from the Sun (semi-major axis): about 518 AU

  • Closest approach (perihelion): about 76 AU
  • Farthest distance (aphelion): about 937 AU

To get things into perspective let’s compare it to Pluto.

  • Pluto takes 248 years to orbit the Sun and Sedna takes over 11 thousand years
  • Sedna at her perihelion is 2.7 times further than Pluto.

Discovering a New Planet’s Meaning

Astrologers at Work

Whenever a new planet, asteroid or trans-Neptunian object is discovered, astrologers begin the fascinating task of uncovering its astrological meaning.

This happened recently with Chiron, Eris and others.

They examine hundreds, and often thousands, of natal charts, comparing the planet’s placement with people’s lives, personalities and significant events.

They also study charts for major world events to identify recurring themes.

Over time, clear patterns begin to emerge, allowing astrologers to develop a consistent interpretation based on observation and experience rather than theory alone.

Meaning in the Myth

An equally important clue comes when the newly discovered body receives its official name.

In astrology, the mythology associated with the name often provides profound insight into the planet’s symbolism.

The myths reveal enduring themes, archetypes and psychological patterns that frequently mirror the meanings found through chart analysis.

In Sedna’s case, her Inuit story of betrayal, abandonment, sacrifice and ultimate transformation provides a powerful framework for understanding her astrological influence.

The combination of careful chart research and mythological symbolism creates the foundation from which the modern interpretation of any newly discovered celestial body is developed.

Discovery

Story

A new planet’s discovery is always an interesting story.

It typically does not just occur that the guy looks through the telescope and says, “Oh look, a new planet.”

What happens is the astronomers take images of the sky and then computers can find the slow movements which signals that a planet is there.

There are several dates of note in the discovery of Sedna.

However, I am using the earliest record of the planet even though it was not recognized as such for a couple of days.

This is when it became into human consciousness.

It all went down in November 2003.

November 2003

Discovered: 10:33pm, 13th November 2003, Palomar Mountain, California, USA.

Announced: 15 March 2004

Discoverers

  • Michael E. Brown (Caltech)
  • Chad Trujillo (then at Gemini Observatory)
  • David Rabinowitz (Yale University)

Sedna was discovered during a survey using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory in California.

At the time Sedna was spotted, it was the most distant known object orbiting the Sun.

Discovery Chart

Here is the Sedna Discovery chart which I’m using.

You could choose the other dates and some astrology website do have differing opinions on the actual birth date for Sedna and the chart we astrologers should use.

Make a decision for yourself.

Naming Sedna

North American Inuit

Sedna is named after the Inuit sea goddess who rules the icy waters and marine animals.

Michael Brown chose the name because the object inhabits one of the coldest, darkest regions of our Solar System.

Why Sedna is Important

Sednoids

Astronomers believe Sedna belongs to a small class of objects called sednoids.

Its orbit is so unusual that it cannot easily be explained by Neptune’s gravity alone.

Some proposed explanations include:

  • A close encounter with another star when the Sun was young,
  • The influence of a distant, as-yet-undiscovered planet (sometimes called Planet Nine),
  • Formation in a dense stellar cluster.

Sedna’s Glyph

Inuktitut

The astrological glyph for Sedna is a modern design created after the dwarf planet’s discovery in 2003.

It is a glyph based on the Inuktitut spelling/pronunciation “Sanna”, rather than an ancient glyph like those of the classical planets.

Sanna

It is inspired by the Inuktitut syllabic characters ᓴ (sa) and ᓇ (na), which are artistically combined into a single symbol.

Although the glyph honors the Inuit origins of Sedna’s name, it is not a traditional Inuit symbol but a contemporary astrological one.

Unicode

We astrologers have adopted the Unicode symbol  (U+2BF2).

Sedna in the Houses

Overarch

I also like to think of Sedna in the houses as showing where we move from victim to wisdom.

That simple thread can tie all twelve house meanings together and gives Sedna a distinctive interpretation that differs from Pluto, Chiron or Neptune.

Sedna Aspects

Aspect Interpretation

I like to approach Sedna’s aspects as showing how her themes of betrayal, surrender, resilience, intuition and transformation interact with the rest of the chart.

Unlike the faster planets, Sedna’s aspects often describe deep, lifelong patterns that unfold gradually.

Generational Influences

Sedna forms aspects with the other planets and sensitive points in the horoscope.

Particularly aspects to the outer planets are in orb for years at a time and so millions of people will have them.

These aspects describe how Sedna’s themes of trust, sacrifice, resilience and spiritual awakening are expressed in your life.

Because Sedna moves so slowly, her aspects often reflect deep generational influences that become personal through the planets she touches.

Nature of the Aspects

When interpreting Sedna’s aspects, consider both the planet involved and the nature of the aspect.

Harmonious aspects often suggest that Sedna’s wisdom can be integrated more naturally.

Challenging aspects indicate areas where life’s deepest lessons may require greater patience, awareness and growth.

Sedna Aspect Orbs

Standard Orbs

When interpreting Sedna, it is essential to use tight orbs and remain within the recommended Starzology orbs.

Because Sedna is an extremely distant trans-Neptunian body with a slow orbital period, its influence is subtle and highly focused.

Wide orbs tend to dilute its symbolism and can lead to interpretations that are vague or misleading.

Cut the Orbs

In many cases, it is better to use even tighter orbs than you would for the traditional planets.

A conjunction within one degree is often far more meaningful than one stretching to several degrees.

Orbs of Moiety

You may also wish to apply the principle of moiety when judging Sedna’s aspects.

In the Starzology system, Sedna has a moiety of just one degree, meaning an aspect is strongest when it falls within that narrow range.

By working with precise orbs, you allow Sedna’s symbolism to emerge with greater clarity and confidence.

Sedna Conjunctions

Blending

A conjunction blends Sedna’s energy directly with another planet.

The qualities of both bodies become closely intertwined, making Sedna’s themes a central part of how that planet is expressed.

Resilience

Conjunctions often describe a lifelong process of transformation.

There may be profound experiences that reshape your understanding of the planet involved, eventually leading to greater resilience, intuition and personal wisdom.

Sedna Oppositions

Projection

An opposition creates awareness through contrast and relationship.

Sedna’s lessons may appear to come through other people or external circumstances before they are recognised within yourself.

Striving for Balance

This aspect invites balance.

Over time you learn to integrate opposing viewpoints, develop healthier boundaries and discover that apparent conflicts often become opportunities for profound personal growth.

Sedna Trines

Flow

A trine allows Sedna’s gifts to flow with relative ease.

Intuition, compassion and inner wisdom may emerge naturally, often without dramatic struggle.

Natural Gifts

These aspects can indicate quiet strength, emotional maturity and an instinctive ability to support others through difficult experiences.

The challenge is to make full use of these natural gifts rather than taking them for granted.

Sedna Squares

Tension

A square creates dynamic tension that encourages growth through challenge.

Sedna’s lessons may feel demanding at first, requiring courage, honesty and perseverance.

Pushes Through

Although this aspect can coincide with periods of frustration or emotional testing, it often becomes one of the greatest sources of personal strength.

The difficulties represented by the square ultimately become catalysts for wisdom, resilience and transformation.

Sedna Sextiles

Choices Made

A sextile offers opportunities for growth through conscious effort.

Sedna’s gifts become available when you choose to develop them through learning, experience and self-awareness.

Natural Wisdom

These aspects support healing, creative problem solving and spiritual development.

They encourage you to recognize life’s challenges as invitations to grow while sharing the wisdom you gain with others.

Overarch

Newbie?

If you are new to astrology, don’t feel that you have to include Sedna in every chart you interpret.

A solid understanding of the traditional planets, signs, houses and aspects will always provide the foundation for good astrological practice.

Once you are confident with these core techniques, exploring newer bodies such as Sedna can add extra depth and nuance to your interpretations.

E-x-t-e-n-d Yourself

Astrology is a lifelong journey of learning.

Every new planet or point you study offers another way of understanding the richness of the birth chart.

Sedna urges us that astrology itself continues to evolve as new discoveries are made and fresh insights emerge.

Stretch yourself a little at a time, experiment with your chart interpretations and allow your experience to guide you.

You may find that Sedna becomes another valuable voice in the celestial conversation.
