Saturn in the Houses

Saturn in the Houses

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: November 2024

Saturn

Saturn, the ringed planet of structure, responsibility, and life lessons, plays a crucial role in astrological interpretations. Its position in your natal chart, particularly the house it occupies, offers profound insights into the areas of life where you may face challenges, experience growth, and ultimately find your greatest strengths.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how Saturn’s energy manifests differently as it moves through each of the twelve astrological houses. Understanding Saturn’s influence can provide valuable perspective on your life’s journey.

Saturn’s Influence in the 12 Natal Houses

Remember, Saturn’s influence is complex and multifaceted. While it often presents challenges, it also offers the opportunity for growth, maturity, and lasting achievement in the areas of life represented by the house it occupies.

Saturn in the 1st House

When Saturn resides in the 1st house of self and identity, it brings a serious, reserved demeanor. These individuals often appear older than their years and may struggle with self-confidence early in life. However, this placement also bestows a strong sense of responsibility and the potential for great personal achievement through discipline and hard work.

Saturn in the 2nd House

In the 2nd house of possessions and values, Saturn can create financial challenges or a fear of lack. These individuals tend to be cautious with money and may need to work hard for financial stability. The silver lining is the potential to develop excellent resource management skills and a deep appreciation for what truly matters in life.

Saturn in the 3rd House

Saturn in the house of communication and learning might lead to early difficulties with speech, writing, or education. However, it also grants the ability to think deeply and communicate with authority. These individuals often excel in fields requiring concentrated mental effort and may become respected teachers or writers later in life.

Saturn in the 4th House

In the house of home and family, Saturn can indicate a challenging childhood or a sense of emotional restriction. These individuals might struggle to feel truly at home or to express their emotions freely. Yet, this placement can also lead to building a solid, stable home life and becoming a pillar of strength for their family.

Saturn in the 5th House

The 5th house governs creativity, pleasure, and children. Saturn here might dampen spontaneity and create barriers to self-expression. However, it can also lead to disciplined creativity, responsible parenting, and the ability to find deep satisfaction in one’s passions.

Saturn in the 6th House

In the house of work and health, Saturn brings a strong work ethic and attention to detail. These individuals may be prone to worry about their health or feel burdened by daily responsibilities. However, they often excel in careers requiring precision and can develop a holistic approach to wellbeing.

Saturn in the 7th House

Saturn in the house of partnerships and relationships can lead to delays or challenges in finding a life partner. These individuals may approach relationships with caution and seriousness. However, when they do commit, their relationships tend to be stable and long-lasting.

Saturn in the 8th House

The 8th house deals with shared resources, transformation, and the deeper mysteries of life. Saturn here can create fears around intimacy or financial entanglements. However, it also provides the potential for profound personal transformation and the ability to handle crises with composure.

Saturn in the 9th House

In the house of higher learning, philosophy, and travel, Saturn may create obstacles to expanding one’s horizons. These individuals might be skeptical of new ideas or hesitant to venture far from home. Yet, this placement can lead to a deeply considered personal philosophy and the ability to teach or guide others.

Saturn in the 10th House

Saturn is often considered strong in the 10th house of career and public image. While it may delay professional success, it usually indicates eventual achievement of significant status or authority. These individuals are often driven to succeed and can become respected leaders in their fields.

Saturn in the 11th House

In the house of friendships and group associations, Saturn can create difficulties in social situations or feelings of isolation. However, it also bestows the ability to form deep, lasting friendships and to contribute meaningfully to collective efforts.

Saturn in the 12th House

Saturn in the house of the unconscious and spiritual realms can create hidden fears or a sense of isolation. These individuals may struggle with self-doubt or feel burdened by unresolved past issues. However, this placement also offers the potential for profound spiritual growth and the ability to find strength in solitude.

Jupiter Square Saturn

Jupiter Square Saturn

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: July 2024

Jupiter Square Saturn

In August 2024, an intriguing astrological event will occur as our two significant social planets, Jupiter and Saturn, form a square aspect with each other.

This alignment, known as the Jupiter-Saturn square, typically involves a three-hit transit.

These three exact contacts usually unfold over a period of six to seven months, making it a prolonged and influential phase.

The Jupiter-Saturn square is a relatively rare event, occurring only once every six to seven years.

This alignment brings about a dynamic interplay between the expansive, optimistic energies of Jupiter and the disciplined, restrictive forces of Saturn.

The tension between these two planets often signals a time of challenge and growth, requiring us to balance our aspirations with reality.

We are fortunate to witness this significant astrological phenomenon towards the end of 2024, continuing into 2025.

This period will provide an opportunity to navigate the complexities of ambition and limitation, encouraging us to find harmony between our goals and the practical steps needed to achieve them.

3-Hit Transit

As these are transiting planets, the Jupiter-Saturn square will involve three exact contacts over the next several months.

This three-hit transit adds depth and complexity to the astrological event, influencing our lives in phases.

First Contact

On August 17, 2024, Jupiter in Gemini will be at 17°, and Saturn in Pisces will be at 17° retrograde.

As Jupiter moves closer, they will form the first exact square.

This initial contact will set the stage, highlighting the areas of tension and potential growth in our lives.

Second Contact

On December 24, 2024, Jupiter, now retrograde in Gemini, will be at 14°.

It will form the second square with Saturn, also at 14° Pisces.

This middle phase of the transit often brings a revisiting of themes and challenges from the first contact, offering a chance to reassess and adjust our approach.

Third Contact

On January 15, 2025, Jupiter will make the final pass of its square with Saturn.

This third contact will bring closure to the transit, culminating the lessons and experiences of the previous months.

This final phase is a time for integration, where we can apply the insights gained and move forward with a clearer understanding of the balance between expansion and limitation in our lives.

The three-hit transit of the Jupiter-Saturn square provides a structured period of growth and reflection, encouraging us to navigate the challenges and opportunities that arise with mindfulness and care.

Assessing Relative Strength: Direction and Essential Dignity

To understand the dynamics of a planetary aspect, it’s important to assess the relative strength of the involved planets.

One effective method is by examining their sign placement and Essential Dignity scores.

By doing so, we can gain insights into which planet holds more influence and how their energies will interact.

Direction and Essential Dignity

Determining which planet is stronger starts with evaluating their positions in the zodiac signs and their Essential Dignity.

Essential Dignity is a system in astrology that assigns strength to planets based on their placement in specific signs.

Let’s unpack the Jupiter-Saturn square aspect to better understand their relative strengths:

First Contact

Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini, with an Essential Dignity score of -5.

This makes Jupiter less effective in expressing its natural expansive and optimistic qualities.

However, Jupiter is direct, which gives it some added strength and forward momentum.

Saturn is retrograde in Pisces, which weakens its influence and ability to impose structure and discipline.

Additionally, Saturn in Pisces is in a position where it lacks essential dignity.

Despite Jupiter being in detriment, it is slightly stronger in this phase because it is direct and disposes Saturn in Pisces, where Saturn’s retrograde motion further diminishes its power.

Second Contact

Jupiter remains in Gemini but is now retrograde.

While retrograde motion typically indicates a period of reflection and internalization, the sign placement still plays a crucial role in determining strength.

Saturn continues to be in Pisces, still retrograde and without essential dignity, making it a guest in Jupiter’s sign.

Even with Jupiter retrograde, it is likely to be more influential because Saturn remains in Pisces (a sign associated with Jupiter).

The sign position of Jupiter generally prevails over the retrograde status, maintaining its relative strength over Saturn.

Third Contact

By the third contact, Jupiter has moved into Cancer, where it is exalted, receiving an Essential Dignity score of +4.

This exaltation greatly enhances Jupiter’s power, allowing it to express its qualities of growth, optimism, and expansion effectively.

Saturn, on the other hand, moves into Aries, where it is in fall, with an Essential Dignity score of -4.

This significantly weakens Saturn’s ability to function optimally, as its disciplined and structured nature is challenged by the impulsive and fiery energy of Aries.

In this final phase, Jupiter in Cancer, exalted and direct, will be much more effective and influential than Saturn in Aries, which is in fall and weakened.

By analyzing the essential dignities, direct or retrograde status, and dispositional relationships of Jupiter and Saturn during these three contacts, we gain a nuanced understanding of their relative strengths.

This helps us predict how the energies of the Jupiter-Saturn square will manifest over time, highlighting periods of growth, challenge, and resolution.

Mars Conjunct Saturn

Mars Conjunct Saturn

Author: Arwynne O’Neill  –   Published: March 2024

Mars conjunct Saturn in Transit

Today we’re talking about the upcoming transit of Mars conjunct Saturn, which is exact on April 10, 2024. This transit happens once every two years and this time it occurs in Pisces.

You may go into this transit feeling like you’ve been held back and you’re just waiting to unleash the full force of your powers of creativity. This transit could feel very frustrating, like your engine is revving but you’re being held down and unable to complete tasks you want to accomplish.

Obstacles in your way might require more patience, perseverance, hard work and planning but you should be able to persevere and achieve more than you would otherwise. This is a great time to overcome limitations or fears, to step up and harness all your faculties in spite of the difficult circumstances you’re facing.

This transit can give you the stamina and patience and initiative to work harder than ever, but it could also result in negative outbursts, passive aggression, nastiness and petty vindictiveness. It definitely needs to be dealt with constructively or else it could be a very destructive transit. You certainly don’t want to antagonize people needlessly at this time because there is a sense that this explosive energy is just barely being held in check.

Mars conjunct Saturn in the Natal Chart

With every aspect there are positive and negative expressions possible, but this is one of the more difficult conjunctions because the energies of Mars and Saturn are so opposite to each other. People with this aspect really needs to make a concerted effort to use it constructively or it can easily become a destructive, bitter and abusive influence. It’s like the stereotypical father who tells his kids they don’t have a right to expect an easy life because his life has been so hard. It’s a bitterness that becomes a cycle of violence if you’re not careful or aware of it.

People with this aspect tend to have great powers of endurance and mental fortitude. It’s the combination of two very opposite energies, Mars being the fiery motivating aggressive, martial force and Saturn being the planet of restriction and discipline, a much more conservative archetype. This aspect tends to create a personality that oscillates between action and control.

They can have an amazing amount of perseverance, discipline, patience and authority if they are able to make the most of this conjunction. This is the kind of person who will likely say that nothing has ever come easy to them. They will feel like everything they’ve accomplished in life has come through hard work and struggle and discipline and the harnessing of all their faculties to attain their goals.

This aspect in a sign like Aries or Sagittarius would have a very different expression than it does in Pisces, which we’re getting a lot of right now with major planetary placements in this watery sign.

Saturn

Saturn’s Sign Rulership

Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius .

Saturn has much to say about discipline, control, self-control, suppression, limitation, boundaries, being held in and the building of walls.

On the upside, Saturn rules things you can master, your ambition, worldly achievement and your grasp in life.

Time, timekeeping, hourglasses, being on time, time and motion, watches, and clocks all are under Saturn’s influence.

Capricorn’s ruling planet also has an affinity with older men and your father.

Saturn symbolizes all authority figures, the police, your parents in general, anything respectable, taskmasters, headmasters, and your boss.

It has to do with all traditional things; the tried and tested, systems, methods and predictable things that are same old, same old.

Saturn is often a factor in depression a lack of faith and the feeling of being.

Your Second Saturn Return – Astrology for the Third Age

Your Second Saturn Return – Astrology for the Third Age

Your Second Saturn Return

Astrology for the Third Age

Discover more on your Saturn returns in general.

Introduction

As you pass the age of sixty, and even the in the year coming up to your 60th birthday, the planets make a special contact to your birth chart as Saturn once more returns to its natal position.

This is where it was the day you were born and Saturn takes around thirty years to make one full pass through the zodiac.

Your first Saturn return happened at about age twenty-nine to thirty and the second Saturn return occurs at around age fifty-nine to sixty.

Saturn is the timekeeper of the zodiac and brings a time for you to recalibrate back to your core values as shown in your natal chart.

Acceptance

You can make the most of your second Saturn return by accepting the following:

  • You know who you are
  • You are mature
  • You know what you can and can’t do
  • You know your limitations both physical and mental
  • You consider starting a new business
  • You become the mistress or master of your own life

The Astrology of your Saturn Return

Your Saturn returns can happen in one of two ways. It all depends on the movement of Saturn at the time of your return. This movement is determined by the angular relationship Saturn has with the Sun in the transit chart.

If the Sun is square or sextile Saturn it will not be the Saturn retrograde that happens once a year.

Your Saturn return could be short as a one hit transit or prolonged if there is a three contact transit.

One Contact Return

In a one conjunction Saturn return the influence will be in orb for ten days beforehand and ten days afterwards the exact date.

If it is one single Saturn return you will immediately recalibrate back to all your natal aspects to Saturn.

Three Contact Return

If you are fortunate to receive a three contact Saturn return the transit can be for as long as three months as you experience an extended Saturn return that is more powerful and life changing.

There will be a first direct hit, then a second retrograde contact and finally the third contact.

  • The initial contact will set the stage for all this Saturn return favours.
  • The second contact makes you revise any plans or opinions about your life.
  • The third and final contact brings closure to the things initially opened at the first contact of the return.

Natal Saturn Direct

If your natal Saturn is direct and you get one transit it will be a relatively painless return. A Saturn return like this is short and sweet.

If your natal Saturn is direct and you get a three pass Saturn return it will draw out. The natal issues relating to Saturn and it’s complex in your chart as shown by the sign, house and aspects that you natal Saturn has.

Each contact will be reinforced in a prolonged Saturn return and you will have more time to assess and process the changes taking place in your life.

Natal Saturn Retrograde

If your natal Saturn is retrograde and you receive one direct contact from Saturn it will be refreshing and the positive side of Saturn will be available to you.

If your natal Saturn is retrograde and you receive a three hit Saturn return it will seem more familiar. The hesitation that comes from the Saturn retrograde will be reinforced through the aspects that you already have in your natal chart.

When to Expect Your Second Saturn Return

Your second Saturn return happens when Saturn does a full second cycle and returns to the sign it was in when you were born.

If your natal Saturn is in Aquarius your Saturn return will happen from March 2020 to March 2023.

If your natal Saturn is in Pisces you will get a Saturn return somewhere between 2023 and May 2025.

The Third Age

Your second Saturn return is like a passage of life. Everyone’s life is different and if you were married or not or have kids or grandchildren the situation will differ from person to person.

But there are main themes for the third age of Saturn.

Now you are free to do more. The constraints and demands of reproduction have passed as most women are now through their menopause and cannot have children. They may be called crones or elders.

The grown up kids may have moved out, gone to college or got married.

Your parents may have gone. Even your husband or wife may have shuffled off.

This time is for you to master yourself and to draw the line about people or things that demand too much from you.

You may downsize your home and find a smaller place and change things.

You are not responsible for so many things and now you can concentrate on yourself.

Now your duty is to yourself. You can approach life with renewed energy and accomplish things you have only dreamed of before.

Now you can:

  • Be free from responsibilities of a family or a husband.
  • Know that retirement is a dirty word
  • Travel
  • Make new friends
  • Get more education
  • Explore your creativity
  • Be a mentor for others
  • Have a simpler life
  • Get a smart phone
  • Eat nourishing and quality food
  • Exercise as you see fit
  • Volunteer your time
  • Upgrade your wardrobe and style
  • Get new hair and makeup
  • Love your grandchildren

Each second Saturn return will be different for everyone but the core meaning will remain.

If you plan carefully you will have a new lease on life and can do what you have always wanted to do on your own terms.
