How to Draw the Astrology Sign Glyphs
How to Draw the Astrology Sign Glyphs
Introduction
I’m going to show you how to draw the twelve astrology sign glyphs.
You don’t need to be an artist to do this.
Once you understand the basic shapes and the sequence of the strokes, they’re actually quite easy to draw.
How You Learn
Shapes
Think back to when you were a child learning the alphabet.
At first, the letters were just funny little shapes that you had to remember.
Then you learned the sounds they represented and gradually you could put the letters together to read words and sentences.
Alphabet
Learning the astrology glyphs works in much the same way.
The symbols are your astrology alphabet.
Once you know what each glyph means, you can look at a chart and recognize the signs quickly without having to stop and think about every symbol.
It becomes a visual language that you can read almost automatically.
Free PDF
I’ve also created a handy dandy free PDF with all twelve glyphs which you can download from the link below.
You can print it out and use it as a practice sheet.
So, let’s get started.
Why Learn the Glyphs?
Language of Astrology
If you’re learning astrology, being able to recognize and draw the glyphs is a useful skill.
You’ll see them everywhere in astrology, from birth charts and ephemerides to astrology books, notes and software.
And once you know the basic glyphs, you can quickly recognize the signs without having to write out their full names.
The Twelve Sign Glyphs
Aries to Pisces
I’m going to work through the signs in zodiac order, starting with Aries and finishing with Pisces.
Aries
Aries is a simple shape to remember.
Think of the horns of the ram.
Start at the left, curve up and out, then bring the strokes back down.
Taurus
Taurus combines the circle of the head with the horns of the bull.
Draw the circle first, then add the two curved horns above it in a semi-circle.
Gemini
Gemini is essentially two vertical lines connected at the top and bottom.
Think of the twins standing side by side.
Cancer
Cancer looks a little like two curved shapes facing each other.
I find it helpful to think of the two claws of the crab.
Leo
Leo is a flowing symbol.
Think of the lion’s tail curling upwards.
The key is to keep the movement smooth rather than trying to make it too angular.
Virgo
Virgo is one of the more distinctive glyphs.
It looks a little like an “m” with an additional loop or curl like a “p” at the end.
Libra
Libra is easy to remember because it looks like a setting Sun sitting above a horizontal line.
Think of balance and scales.
Scorpio
Scorpio is similar to Virgo, in that it starts with an “M”, but it finishes with a pointed tail.
Think of it as the scorpion’s tail with a stinger.
Capricorn
Capricorn has a more complicated shape, so take this one slowly.
I like to think of it as combining the qualities of the goat and the mermaid tail for the “Sea Goat.”
In a way it looks like the letters “V” and “S” combined.
Once you’ve drawn it a few times, it becomes much easier to recognize.
Aquarius
Aquarius is simply two wavy or zig-zag lines.
Think of waves or flowing water pouring from the ewer representing “The Water Bearer.”
Pisces
The Pisces glyph is drawn as two curved shapes, the fish, joined, or tethered, by a horizontal line.
Think of two fish swimming in opposite directions.
Practice Makes Perfect
Keep Going
The secret to learning these glyphs isn’t artistic ability, but rather it’s repetition.
Draw each glyph several times and you’ll soon find that your hand remembers the movement.
You could even keep a small astrology notebook and practice the glyphs while you’re studying your chart.
