Planetary Phases

I love to help you understand astrology better so you can read charts better. It is such a wonderful subject I believe you really do need to go deeper and learn as much as you can.

You can find the phase between two planets and that is any two planets will have a phase relationship with each other.

Question

When we come to the topic of “phases” the question arises, “How do I know what the phase is?”

Phases

There are eight phases:

New Phase

Crescent Phase

First Quarter Phase

Gibbous Phase

Full Phase

Disseminating Phase

Last Quarter Phase

Balsamic Phase

To help you find the phases in a chart use my handy dandy Phases Template.

What You Do

Print

Print out the phase guide diagram pages. There is a large one and a small one.

Cut

Carefully cut the templates out along the dotted lines.

How to Use Your Phase Template

Slower Planet

Place the yellow “slow” tab on the slower moving planet of the two planets you are finding the phase for.

Faster Planet

See which phase the faster planet falls in on the template.

Note: If it is near a phase boundary you may have to manually calculate the angular distance between the two planets.

Planetary Speeds

Order of Speed

The planets in order of speed in the zodiac.

Moon

Sun

Mercury

Venus

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Chiron

Uranus

Neptune

Pluto

Eris

In General

Note that sometimes Mercury can travel faster than the Sun as it does cover more of the zodiac in one year that the Sun does due to its retrograde periods (this also goes for Venus five years out of eight).

However, we usually see planetary phases with the Sun, from the Sun to the other planet, so in these cases (Mercury and Venus) the Sun will generally be the slower planet.
