Solstice chart

The winter solstice occurs every year around 21st/22nd of December when the Sun enters Capricorn. Our star has now reached its most southerly distance from the equator before returning north. It is at this point of latitude (23.5 degrees south) that the Tropic of Capricorn lies horizontal to the Earth’s equator.
This photo of yours truly and the Little Darlings was taken during 2001 in Africa. The paved line that I am standing on in the road is the Tropic of Capricorn running around the Earth. ‘Twas a hot day indeed.
T-Square
This chart features Jupiter opposition Saturn and both square Venus making a dissociate t-square with the focus on Venus. It is interesting to note the mutual reception between Venus (in Saturn’s sign of Aquarius) and Saturn (transiting through Venus’ positive sign of Libra). A mutual reception usually places the two planets in question on an even footing but in this case Saturn has the edge as it in its sign of exaltation. A planet in exaltation can be considered like a guest in your home, they are most welcome, but are unlikely to go and take a shower.
This particular t-sq calls us to both give and take and if necessary acquiesce gracefully.
Yod
There is also a yod (sometimes called the Finger of God) where Mars is sesquiquadrate (135 degrees) both Jupiter and Venus, which in turn have a square aspect between them. Yods are notoriously difficult as all the aspects are based on the hard 8th harmonic.
Mars as the focal planet here suggests themes where concerted efforts will be required, somewhat hidden but available when needed, during this three month period until the vernal equinox.
Note that the Venus square Jupiter aspect appears in both of the major aspect patterns. Both the benefics are in a tense arrangement but offer a good outcome. Venus disposes Jupiter in her own sign of Taurus suggesting that the Venus principles of love and harmony will prevail.
For astrologers
Considering how astrologers will fare this quarter we look to the condition of the planet ruling our craft namely Uranus.
In the solstice chart Uranus is square both the Sun and Pluto which are conjunct in Capricorn. This chart, set for Oakville (and effective for all the Toronto area and GTA) shows the conjunction straddling the IC or Immum Coeli and at the place of the foundation of the chart.
We as astrologers and students are called to truly identify our deepest reasons for studying and learning. Whether just for personal pleasure or ultimate fiscal freedom we would do well to examine our motives and unfathonable interest in astrology. The outcome of this self exploration can add clarity and renewed direction in the basis of our individual astrology lives.
